Anyway, this movie is about a political leader, a role model, a father and a family provider. It is basically about him, the 43rd President of the United States of America, George Walker Bush. Directed by Oliver Stone, this show is based on the life and presidency of George W. Bush, which is still present now, and due to end at mid January 2009 either to be suceeded by Senator McCain or Senator Obama. I think it's great publicity towards his personality and can actually be a model for people to follow like the core values especially from a candidate of presidency. He might not be the perfect man on earth as no one is perfect but he has played his cards well enough as how God has given him that responsibility.

Well, it's election season yet again (just in case you hadn't picked up on that). The two mainstream candidates are Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. While both candidates have our country's best interest in heart, Barack Obama stands for change, whereas McCain supports overwhelmingly the same policies as George W. Bush.Under Bush's 8-year reign our country's national debt has more than doubled (from around $3.5 trillion in early 2001 to around $9.5 trillion in late 2008), a war has needlessly for more than 6 years, and the average drop-out rate in schools across the country has increased. Obama will make the first in hopefully a marathon of steps to repair our country, both in image overseas and in prosperity at home.  I therefore urge, nay, implore you to vote for Barack Obama. Below is a collection of more prominent and moving speeches from the Democratic National Convention, which concluded last evening. I strongly encourage all of you to listen to one of these speeches, especially if you are on the fence about whom to choose, or are even consdiering McCain.  If you are only going to listen to one, I would suggest either Hilary Clinton's or Barack Obama's speech.

The "W" Effect

Ever since 9/11, you've allowed yourself to be scared witless. You. Not me, my fellow American. You see, I was lucky enough to have been born and raised in a small town in the Midwest. My Uncles had names like Toots, Doc and Punk. They lived through the Great Depression, killed Nazis and defended the McDonald's in my hometown by sitting there every morning for hours reminiscing about how they not not only survived, but thrived in the face of adversity. They didn't look to "W"ashington to protect them. Rather, they looked to "W"ashington to stay out of their damn way. My Uncle Doc once told me he was so tough, that when he walked through town, men hid; the men that couldn't find hiding spots shot themselves. So, growing up in a small town, as John Mellencamp sang, I was "taught to fear Jesus." That's it.

Jesus.

But, that's just me. You?

You've been trained to fear...?

Fear.

It's the only reason I can up with as to how John McCain is leading Barack Obama in the polls (well, that and the real possibility that the fix is in).

Why are you so scared?

Well, probably, because while FDR taught American's like Toots, Punk and Doc that there was nothing to fear but fear itself, W has done one hell of a job convincing today's generation of Todds, Phillips and Dillons that they should fear everything, especially a Democratic President and/or Democratic-controlled Congress. How did W do this? By convincing us that a barrel full of jungle gym trained terrorists in a desert half-a-world-away are coming for you and your family. And, unfortunately, you believed him.

And as a result of W's actions (starting wars, running massive deficits, spying on Americans) and your reaction (buying things), today, Americans collectively act less and less like a Super Power and more and more like a nation of whiners, wimps and worriers who look constantly to the government to protect them.

Anyway, thinking about The W Effect got me to thinking about what scares Americans besides terrorists...

2. Purchasing just those things you either REALLY want or really need. It used to be that Americans actually put the things they bought in their houses. Then, you bought so much junk (thanks "buy now, pay later") that garages became a place to store everything except your cars. That was OK, because cars became too big for garages anyway. Today, you probably have so much crap, you spend a portion of your hard-earned money for a storage space to store it all. Hmmm, maybe it's because the terrorists will never think of looking for your things there (after all, you haven't been there in years... you just send payment every month)

Look, it's time to stop voting for a dude just because he looks like he'd be more fun to have a beer with than the other guy... and then expecting that dude to solve your problems, or to keep you safe. Seriously, are you better off than you were eight years ago? I'd say, most American's aren't (I'm not). Are you safer than you were eight years ago? I'm just a copywriter, but it seems to me that Americans are more scared than ever before.

So, you have three options: you can do like those "men" that feared my Uncle Doc and either find a place to hide or shoot yourself. Or, you can take FDR's advice.

Today, Brolin is hinting at police brutality in a Huffington Post interview:

There was no bar fight, and that will come out. What really happened, I can’t talk about it, but it’s pretty ridiculous. What I can say is that what went down was not good at all, and everybody involved knows that. I think they had a responsibility from their penal-code manual to do what they needed to do, but I don’t think it paralleled what was actually done.

Fighting and Celling

The most obvious choice of resources—my journal—will be useless as I am not a consistent, thought-provoking, or even legible journaler. They’d probably stumble upon my large collection of impenetrably folded notes passed among me and my friends in the halls of Central Middle School. Pointless unless they’re interested in the results of our many MASH games or whom I hearted in 6th hour Spanish.

So what will be their muse? What will tell my story? Cue Facebook. In the archives of my profile page they’ll find all they need to know. Music I loved, movies I watched, religions I practiced. They will discover entire wall-to-wall conversations documenting coffee date confirmations, get-well wishes, and a disturbing amount of Jim Gaffigan references. Photo Albums will artifact who I was, where I went, and sadly what I wore.

But your chapter, Relationship Status. O, what a meager portion you will serve the reader. Since Facebook and I met over five years ago, everything else on my profile has been updated regularly. I hope you haven’t felt left out. It’s not my fault. All the other guys are in my jurisdiction, but you’re dependent on so many other factors that whole sections of bookstores are dedicated to you and your plethora of problems.

Fear not. This letter is an announcement, not a lamentation. I bring good tidings of great joy! Static Relationship Status, it’s time for you to spice up your small chapter in the bestselling Life of Amber According to Facebook. It’s time for something new.

Yes, strip free of that SINGLE label and try this one on (drum roll, please): IN A RELATIONSHIP.

Listen, you’ve been holding so tightly to that Single status for almost four years now. Four years. That’s a presidential term! Or more importantly, the amount of time before I see Michael Phelps’ 24 pack in all of its glory flashed repeatedly on my television every night! It’s just too long.

For two of those four years I’ve been in-like with a fella who coincidently is sweet on me, too. You know the story...boy meets girl at church, girl thinks he’s scrawny but secretly hopes he’s interested, he makes no move (“She’s out of my league” he says), she leaves for Africa, as a clueless infatuated boy he sends her diamond earrings for Christmas, she swoons, a Notebook-esque summer in the States follows, she’s off to Africa again, during the Christmas homecoming she freaks and breaks things off with him at iHop the day before she leaves again, he is confused, she’s incommunicado for six months, realizes she was an idiot, he forgives her for being an idiot and admits he’s also an idiot, says she’s as pretty as a sunflower seed.

Textbook. Yep, just what I had in mind when I pictured how I’d change my Relationship Status. Nothing dramatic or confusing or crazy. Just your typical boy meets girl. Girl meets OH MY GOSH WHAT THE HECK ARE WE DOING IN A RELATIONSHIP? CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? WHAT DO WE DO NOW? ARE WE REQUIRED TO HANG OUT EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT? BECAUSE EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT I LIKE WATCHING OLD MOVIES ON PBS AND YOU DON’T LIKE OLD MOVIES. AND WHY DON’T YOU EVER WEAR FLIP-FLOPS? HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ORDERING FOR ME AT RESTAURANTS? SHOULD WE START TAKING PICTURES TOGETHER BECAUSE IN 2 YEARS OF KNOWING EACH OTHER WE DON’T HAVE ANY PICTURES TOGETHER!

Yeah, it’s pretty much like that.

And Facebook Relationship Status, or anyone else who doubts the endearing qualities of this new boy (who I’ll affectionately call W), all you need to know is the following conversation we had yesterday via e-mail:

Me to W: Here is something funny I just read in my Cross-Cult. Comm. textbook: "Your second-grade teacher may have asked you to stop throwing rocks at a group of birds. Perhaps the teacher added that the birds were part of a family and were gathering food for their babies. She might have also indicated that birds feel pain just like people. Perhaps 20 years later, you are invited to go quail hunting. You are about to say yes when you remember those words from your teacher and decide not to go."

W to Me: Wow, I would just shoot the quail in front of my second grade teacher, if she's even alive.

And that’s how he won my heart. And why I’m changing you, Facebook Relationship Status. Because I could never be prouder to be in a relationship with someone who—despite his aversion to Third Day—unashamedly watched High School Musical with me (twice), brings flowers to the airport, lets me win at Frisbee golf and eat his food without asking, quotes entire dialogues of Big Daddy while grocery shopping, and owns a purple shirt with a dinosaur on it.

And might have a promising future in quail hunting.

Off we went to our local Hirsch's Home Store, where we spent about an hour browsing through all the dishwashers, looking at the various cycles they offered, if they could do half loads or full loads, how water wise they were etc etc. Eventually we felt we were informed enough to make the right decision. We decided on the top of the range LG dishwasher. It had 4 cycles, it could do a half load or a full load, it was very economical in terms of its water usage and it looked pretty fancy with all its buttons, lights and little pinging sounds. We left Hirsch's, me feeling pretty pleased with the wonderful gift I had bought my husband, him skipping along happily as he would never have to wash dishes again. Our dish washer arrived the following day and we have never looked back, I actually don't know how we survived 5 years without it!

Exactly 13 months after this truly life changing purchase, we switched it on one morning only to be surprised by the awful noise coming from it. We duly phoned Hirsch's to find out if they could send a technicianout, which they did, he informed us that the motor had blown and we'd need to replace the motor at a cost of R1000. We were horrified to discover that our warranty had apparently run out and that we'd have to pay this cost ourselves. At the time we were busy with major home renovations and extensions and the majority of our stuff was packed away in storage, so we had to take their word for it and duly purchased a new motor.

The new motor has been in our dishwasher for 6 months, 4 weeks ago, W packed the dishwasher on morning before work, turned it on and there was that familiar motor burning out noise again! Disgusted he contacted LG, who informed us that the second motor only came witha 3 month guarantee, however, they were stunned to discover that we'd paid for the second motor as according to them, we had a 24 month warranty and should never have paid!

And so began a total nightmare of frustration and trading of phone calls and messages. I decided, as this was W's toy that I should leave it up to him to resolve, of course forgetting that he has neither my determination or tenacity or my foul temper for that matter. He's so sweet and so polite but neither of those traits were getting him anywhere. Eventually on Friday, after trading phone calls and just not getting anywhere with either LG or Hirsch's he asked me if I'd phone and see if I can could have any better luck.

Now let me tell you, I've had an extremely busy week at work, I haven't been sleeping well and I had my period, I was not in a good mood. I had myself so worked up that by the time I made the phone call I was so angry that my hands were shaking and I was battling to control my breathing. I spent 15 minutes on the phone shouting at the store manager and seeing how many times I could fit the "F" word into one sentence. However at the end of the conversation I felt that perhaps we were getting somewhere at the store manager had agreed that he would have a resolution to the problem by midday on Monday.

Sceptically I hung up the phone and decided to leave well alone until midday on Monday, when, if we still hadn't had a response I would be taking the matter to Hirsch's head office.

But you know what, it wasn't necessary, sometimes people really surprise us, sometimes, they do exceed our expectations. This morning while still lying in bed, at 9am I might add (definitely one of the bonuses of being childless) we received the phone call from the Store manager to say he'd been given the go ahead to give us a brand new dishwasher!

I'm so thrilled by their turn of service, but disappointed by the fact that we only got a favorable resolution after a very unpleasant phone call on Friday. But hey, W is happy again as he won't be washing dishes again.

Yay Dishwasher, I don't know how we'd survive without you!
