In addition to Internet Safety, learn the new grammar of the Web and how to:

• Read URL web addresses to find their hidden meaning
• Locate owners of websites
• Evaluate the validity of a website
• Investigate fair use as it applies to student-created digital documents

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the iSAFE curriculum and the modules available to them in the classroom. They will create model lessons for their students that teach Internet Safety, Literacy, and Intellectual Property/Copyright.

Zattoo, el conocido portal de televisión online pasa a ser de pago de forma oficial. Esta noticia ya la había aventurado Zattoo desde el mes de Agosto en su blog, cuando al parecer contaban con un millón de usuarios en España, pero a partir de ahora se hace oficial. Esta noticia es bastante sorprendente en estos tiempos para la comundiad en general. El argumento de Zattoo, que sólo aplicará esta medida en Dinamarca y España, es que literalmente "no llegan".

La noticia es bastante sorprendente porque hace añicos la tendencia que se está teniendo en Internet en los últimos años de hacer gratuito lo de pago. Servicios como el alojamiento web, archivo de información, direcciones de correo, etc, muestran una clara tendencia hacia hacer gratuito lo que evidentemente tiene un coste. El objetivo que plantea Zattoo en esta ocasión es hacer de pago lo que habitualmente es gratuito como son los canales de televisión en abierto.

¿Quién y bajo qué circunstancias va a querer este servicio aunque estemos hablando de precios por debajo de los 2 euros al mes? Seguramente muy pocos y bajo condiciones extremas de movilidad con línea fija. Muy pocos (¿tal vez nadie?) ciudadanos españoles con residencia en España van a contratar este servicio, y pocos, muy pocos, serán los que lo contraten viviendo en el extranjero. Sin duda la propuesta del modelo de negocio es muy arriesgada y no se garantiza el éxito bajo prácticamente ninguna premisa. Me cuesta pensar que dentro de 5 años haya una comunidad en Internet más o menos amplia que pague religiosamente una cuota mensual por ver canales de distribución pública y gratuita.

Además, conforme avanza la tecnología, y los anchos de banda que se ofertan crecen, hay más y más maneras de emitir (o repetir) televisión en directo, bien sea a través de P2P o a través de conexión directa con Windows Media Player o VLC. Como ejemplo podemos tomar el repetitivo campo de batalla de los partidos de futbol de pago por visión (vease rojadirecta por ejemplo). Si el año pasado se podían ver un par de partidos con sistemas de P2P utilizando herramientas como soapcast, useeme, tvants, tvkoo, etc y mucha paciencia, de un tiempo a esta parte, todos los partidos de la jornada y alguno de segunda están disponible con sistemas de streaming directo (algo impensable hace un par de años) como justin.tv, mogulus o intergoles. Cualquiera puede emitir una señal de televisión desde su propia casa con unos conocimientos medios, aunque de momento la calidad en general sea cuestionable. Con este panorama se hace realmente complicado pensar en el triunfo de la venta de canales de televisión gratuitos a través de Internet. Zattoo cambiará su modelo de negocio (ellos mismos afirman que será así si consiguen más ingresos por publicidad) en poco tiempo o cerrará en países como España o Dinamarca donde experimentalmente probarán este modelo.

VLC ti voglio bene

The Aspire is undoubtedly attractive and feels better designed and made than the best girlfriend's first generation EEE. The keyboard and the screen especially are superior to the EEE, and there is a multicard reader that's coming in handy.

Still compact, but larger than a Star Trek VI mug.

Apart from the multicard reader there's 3 USB Slots, an external VGA plug, and an additional slot for more SD cards. It boots up in seconds and apart from a mild whirring noise when the little fan is trying to cool Intel's Atom processor pretty quiet (though not as silent as the girlfriend's eee).

It's pleasant on the eye, balances well on my lap and fits perfectly into my work bag. Unfortunately the batttery is completely pish. While watching Little Britain USA (which, btw was rubbish) the battery drained almost cmpletely, and I presume that under full load the battery wouldn't last longer than an hour. No comparison to my Macbook that would happily run for 5 hours. So no long train journeys or flights to New Zealand in economy class then.

As mentioned before, Acer is selling the One with Linpus lite, a Fedora 8 derivative. This is quite similar in apperance to the EEE's Xandros flavour, just with worse applications. I have no idea who had the idea of leaving out Skype (it does have a webcam, you know), VLC and Thunderbird and instead use some other unusuable crap. So my first job was to get used to Fedora's weird package manager, 'yum'. I now have all the necessary apps installed, and available via XFCE's 'advanced menu', but still have to remove the annoying apps and then edit the desktop file to add the right icons. I am quite happy to do that, but I can see the best girlfriend ever struggling with that task.  I have no idea what Acer's software engineers were smoking when putting the One's software package together, but here they certainly messed up.  Another minus was the lack of the GIMP and the fact that so far my trusty TX1-Powershot is not being recognised by the crappy photomanager.

So, after 3 days with the Aspire, what are the first thoughts?

Well designed hardware that is let down by a crap battery and a software package that is lacking in functionality compared to the EEE's far superior Xandros flavour. I am pretty sure that very soon Ubuntu's Hardy Heron will make a guest appearance, but for now I am just happy that I have replaced the Macbook with a credit-crunch model (the Aspire costs exactly a third) and that I can again watch movies and listen to my music.

Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Mac version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.

Ce problème est dû aux nouveaux firmwares développés par Free pour les Freebox (v4 et v5) qui ont inclus un nouveau système de gestion du multiposte (voir détails plus bas). Mercredi et jeudi ont été des journées noires pour les freenautes; certains se sont retrouvés sans télé, ni téléphone ni internet ! Normalement le retour à la normale a été progressif sur la journée d'hier, jeudi 2 octobre.

Par contre, en ce qui concerne le multiposte, surtout si vous utilisez un mod (Fritivi, ADSL TV,...), (presque) aucune solution... En fait la gestion du multiposte de ce mods doit être modifiée pour fonctionner avec le nouveau système mis en place par Free avec les nouveaux firmwares. Si vous utilisez VLC directement, ça devrait fonctionner correctement avec le lien habituel: http://mafreebox.freebox.fr/freeboxtv/playlist.m3u

Voici ce que disait Pierre François Hugues, ingénieur recherche et développement chez Free:
"(...), lors de la sortie des prochains firmware v4 et Freebox ADSL, la gestion de la playlist du multiposte changera. Au lieu de proposer directement un fichier .m3u à télécharger, la Freebox (quelle que soit la version) renverra alors un code HTTP 302 et l’url de redirection vers le fichier .m3u.
Si votre logiciel télécharge dynamiquement la playlist, assurez vous qu’il sache suivre une redirection de type 302.
Si votre logiciel est livré avec la playlist "en dur" (ce que nous déconseillons car elle pourra dorénavant changer à tout moment), préparez vous à en distribuer une nouvelle version."

Donc les mods n'ayant pas encore été mis à jour, le multiposte ne fonctionne plus si vous avez redémarré votre Freebox et donc installé le nouveau firmware (version 1.5.6 pour la FBX v5 et 1.4.0 pour la v4).

Des solutions de "bricolage" sont possibles pour essayer de le faire fonctionner, mais rien de sûr. Pour les tester, rendez-vous sur les forums de:

• ADSL TV (plus particulièrement cette discussion)

• Fritivi

• Et plus généralement, ce forum qui traite de plusieurs mods, celui de TvFreePlayer.com (qui héberge celui de Fritivi).

En attendant, donc, si vous n'avez pas redémarré votre freebox, ne le faites pas si vous voulez encore profiter du multiposte, le temps que ces problèmes soient réglés ;)

Oggi, ad esempio, sono riuscita a guardare un DVD e ne sono contenta :-)

VLC 0.9 on ilmestynyt vähän aikaa sitten.Vlc-mediaplayer on ilmainen vapaaseen lähdekoodin perustuva mediantoisto ohjelma,jossa on monia toimintoja.Se pystyy toistamaan dvdeet,yleisimmät muusiikki tiedostot yms.ilman koodekeita.Se on vaatimattoman näköinen,mutta kuten vanha sanonta kuuluu:"Ei ole koiraa karvoihin katsominen".

Tuota noin,vlc player on monitoiminen,mukava ja nopea.Muutamana miinuksena on (välillä ) vaikeat ja typerästi suunitellut valikot,huono Suomennos ja muutamia pikku "fiboja".Kannatan VLC monesta syystä.

Tutto è iniziato quando il nostro fido Petcio è entrato in possesso di un vecchio PC, non piú usato dal suo ex proprietario. Stiamo parlando di un vecchio computer dotato di un disco da 16 gigabyte e di una RAM da 128 megabyte; il nostro "paziente" era inoltre privo di scheda di rete.

Un computer del genere appare ridicolo se confrontato con i mostri oggi in vendita nei negozi; l'idea di installarci sopra Windows è stata subito quindi scartata. Per farlo funzionare decentemente sarebbe stato infatti necessaria una vecchia versione di Windows, oggi ovviamente non supportata e ormai facilmente attaccabile anche dai piú elementari virus.

Come sanno bene gli esperti di trashware, l'arte di riportare in vita vecchi computer, il sistema operativo migliore è Linux; leggero, semplice e compatibile anche con hardware datato. Essendo però privo di esperienza con il sistema operativo libero, il nostro caro Petcio, su mio consiglio, si è indirizzato verso Xubuntu, la sorella leggera di Ubuntu.

Prima di tutto abbiamo impostato il BIOS in modo che permettesse il boot dal CD. Un'impresa relativamente facile, ma durata non pochi minuti. Petcio ed io, per comunicare, abbiamo infatti utilizzato solo ed esclusivamente MSN Messenger... un'operazione quindi non propriamente facile in assenza di mezzi di comunicazione diretti!

Dopo aver superato questo scoglio iniziale, come in ogni grande impresa si sono subito posti altri problemi. Il CD utilizzato dal nostro caro Petcio si è rivelato un traditore, impedendo la corretta installazione del sistema. Il colpevole? Le righe profonde «come canyon» (parole sue) presenti sulla superificie del disco; superificie che potete ammirare in questa immagine.

Superato quest'altro problema (sostituendo quindi il CD), Petcio è riuscito ad installare finalmente Xubuntu. Nei giorni successivi ha poi provveduto ad acquistare ed installare una scheda di rete che apparentemente si rifiutava di funzionare.

Il problema era il tipo di connessione: il computer con Linux non riesce infatti a sfruttare la parte di connessione offertagli dalla scheda di rete dell'altro PC con Windows XP. La scheda di rete del PC con Linux è tuttavia riconosciuta e funzionante, dato che è possibile collegarsi ad Internet utilizzando un router Ethernet (che anch'esso ha inizialmente posto qualche problema, risolto egregiamente dopo una semplice riconfigurazione). Colgo quindi l'occasione per chiedere a qualcuno esperto di reti se condividere una connessione con Windows XP (che funge quindi da router) può dare problemi.

Per non risultare noioso e prolisso racconterò solo gli altri punti salienti, cioè la correzione del file «/etc/apt/sources.list» per permettere a Xubuntu di utilizzare tutti i server e la successiva installazione di programmi come aMSN, VLC e i codec per riprodurre formati proprietari come MP3 o DiVX.

Questa lunga avventura non è ancora finita: dobbiamo effettuare l'aggiornamento del sistema (ci sono molti megabyte che aspettano solo di essere scaricati...), alleggerirlo ulteriormente e magari installare altre applicazioni.

Forza Petcio, benvenuto nel mondo Linux! E un benvenuto anche a tutti gli altri nuovi arrivati, che aumentano ogni giorno di piú!

Ya tenéis disponible una nueva versión de VLC, para mi el mejor reproductor multimedia que posee sus propios codecs, es recomendable actualizarla ya que es la primera que arregla una serie de fallos, de hecho es la primera versión que corrige errores de la serie 0.9x.
En este aviso de nueva versión aprovechan para hacer un llamamiento a desarrolladores para la versión de windows, me alegra saber que Linux y Mac OS X gozan de buena salud y de personal abundante y desinteresado. Valga este articulo para difundir dicho llamamiento (pero con la boca pequeña eh)

Los capítulos pilotos de las series nuevas y especialmente los “season premiers” me suelen parecer, en general, bastante sosos en comparación con el resto, pues suelen servir para presentar nuevos personajes, plantear la que será la trama sobre la que girará la temporada y poco más.

En ese sentido, los 4×01 y 4×02 de Prison Break han cumplido la mecánica de lo que suelen ser este tipo de episodios. Sorpresas pocas, por no decir ninguna, pues la muerte de Whistler era algo que algunos ya esperábamos.

Por lo demás, como capítulo de presentación me ha gustado. Reconozco que desde que supe que Michael se reencontraría con Sara, tenía cierto miedo de que la serie se acabase convirtiendo en un cutre-culebrón sentimentaloide centrado en la relación entre estos personajes, pero una vez visto los capítulos, me quedo más tranquilo.

De las pocas cosas que me han decepcionado de este, en mi opinión más que aceptable inicio de temporada, han sido las caras nuevas. Don, el agente del FBI me ha parecido el mejor de los tres, el que creo que más puede aportar a la serie. Por contra Roland Glenn, el hacker informático me ha resulatado un personaje insulso, sin mucho que contar, mientras que Wyatt, el agente de la Compañía que persigue a los hermanos, no es más que un nuevo Kellerman con algunas horas más de bronceado.

Otros de los detalles que han empañado un poco el estreno de temporada son, la lamentable explicación para que Sucre y Bellick estén fuera de Sona y la ausencia de un verdadero cliffhanger al final de “Breaking and entering” que nos dejase a todos contando los segundos hasta el capítulo del próximo Lunes. Por lo demás, nada que objetar.
