Abkhazia and S. Ossetia follow Kosovo's example
Russian MPs have voted for the recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is just the first major consequence of Kosovo's declaration of independence, says political analyst Aleksandr Pavic, from the Belgrade Institute of Political Research.

Shevchenko heads back to AC Milan

Shevchenko has long been linked with a move back to Milan

Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko is to re-join Italian side AC Milan after completing a medical on Monday.

The 31-year-old Ukrainian cost the Blues £30m in 2006 but has failed to make an impact in the Premier League.

Shevchenko is AC Milan's second-most prolific goalscorer of all-time with 127 goals from 208 games.

"Chelsea have agreed terms for Andriy Shevchenko to return to AC Milan," said Chelsea's website. "Details of the agreement will remain confidential."

Shevchenko failed to earn a regular spot in the first team at Chelsea following his move to Stamford Bridge, scoring just nine goals in 47 appearances.

His first season ended prematurely when he had hernia surgery, forcing the striker to miss the Champions League semi-final against Liverpool and the FA Cup final.

New Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari did not pick him for their first Premier League match of the campaign last weekend, prompting Milan to launch the latest in a string of attempts to bring the Ukraine international back to Italy.

AS Roma and Sampdoria also expressed an interest but returning to Milan was always his preferred choice.

"For me it's like winning the Champions League," Shevchenko told Italy's ANSA news agency. "There were complications but now everything is resolved I'm really happy."

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani was overjoyed to re-sign Shevchenko.

"After a series of frenetic phone calls during the whole day, we reached an agreement with Chelsea," said Galliani.

"Tomorrow he will be in Milan, Monday he will undergo a medical and then sign a contract.

"We have managed to bring home a player who has scored the most goals in our shirt in the last 50 years."

Galliani had said earlier this week that talks over Shevchenko had stalled with Milan wanting a loan deal but Chelsea only interested in a permanent transfer.

The details of their eventual agreement remain confidential.

After buying Ronaldinho from Barcelona at the start of the close season, Milan had said they would not bring in any more players.

However, an injury to Marco Borriello, Alexandre Pato's stuttering form for Brazil at the Olympics and Filippo Inzaghi turning 35 have made the signing of another striker necessary.

"I have heard from Andriy about 48 times in the last three hours. Andriy made a mistake in leaving and I think after two years he has understood that this is his home," Galliani added.

"Now he has made economic sacrifices but at this point what counts is that he has come back to us."

Shevchenko began his career at Dynamo Kiev, winning five league titles and two national cups with the team between 1994-99.

He spent seven successful years at Milan, helping the Rossoneri clinch the 2002/03 Champions League 2003/04 Serie A title.

He was also named European Footballer of the Year in 2004.

However, he missed the penalty that gave Liverpool victory in the 2004/05 Champions League final.

The Serie A season kicks of 31 August with Milan due to host Bologna in their opening game.

It is easy to assume that escalating tensions between Russia and the West could mean an end to the blurry fudges of the post-Cold War years and a recasting of East-West relations into black and white antagonism, with two opposing camps, each surrounded by its own sphere of influence.

But look at how the Georgia crisis is being received around Russia's edges. The response is often evasive, and sometimes downright surprising.

Among the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which 20 years ago were constituent parts of the USSR whose loyalty to Moscow was automatic, Russia has won remarkably few endorsements. Some Central Asian states have sent in aid to South Ossetia. But on the whole the response has been decidedly muted.

To be fair, Georgia too has drawn criticism. But gone are the days when Moscow could rely on satellite states to speak up for it. For Russia's leaders to declare that Russia was and always will be the "guarantor of stability" in the Caucasus is now a risky statement that could repel as well as draw regional backing.

Its neighbours are now independent countries whose priority is not to please the Kremlin but turn any crisis to their advantage, or worry about how it might adversely affect them.

Economic interests first

Next door to Georgia in the Caucasus, Azerbaijan's top concern is to keep the pipeline that runs from Baku through Georgian territory to Turkey free from threat of attack.

But President Ilham Aliyev is also apparently wary of aggravating Russia. He has now publically backed Georgia's territorial integrity, but steered clear of more vigorous support of Tbilisi.

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have donated aid for Ossetian refugees

Landlocked Turkmenistan too, with its immense gas fields on the other side of the Caspian Sea, has a lively interest in making sure the Baku pipeline is not disrupted and Georgia remains a stable reliable partner.

It competes as well as collaborates with Russia as an energy supplier. It does not want one of its main outlets threatened.

And beleaguered Armenia, at the southern tip of the Caucasus, has even more reason to be alarmed. Any prolonged conflict in Georgia would disrupt all its supply routes.

Further west and closer to Europe in the "former Soviet space", there has been an even more marked shift in governmental responses.

Tiny impoverished Moldova, on the border between Romania and Ukraine, has its own "frozen conflict" unsolved from Soviet days: the Russian-supported and heavily armed enclave of Trans-Dniester.

So this week Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin pointedly turned to the European Union for help in finding a peaceful way out of that stand-off.

Ukrainian ambivalence

In Ukraine, President Viktor Yushchenko from the very start saw Russia's military intervention in Georgia as an implied threat. Ukraine too is a Nato aspirant, and Russia has frequently warned it that Nato membership is something it will not tolerate.

So President Yushchenko was swift to define himself as the champion of Ukraine's right to join Nato and defy Russian pressure.

Not only did he fly to Tbilisi to offer moral support, he issued a presidential decree to remind Russia that its Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol in the Crimea does, after all, use a Ukrainian port.

In future, he demanded, Russia must give 72 hours' notice before moving its vessels and he once again raised the prospect that Ukraine might not renew its lease for the port when it expires in 2017.

But how Russia's relations with Ukraine might unwind is not straightforward.

The fear has certainly been expressed in Kiev that a restive pro-Russian population in the Crimea might provide a pretext for another Russian military intervention. Russian nationalists who see the Crimea as historically Russian territory would seize any pretext to realise their ambitions, goes the argument.

What is certainly true is that a clash between Moscow and Kiev over the Crimea would probably cleave Ukraine in half and open up a dangerous conflict with widespread repercussions. But a more likely scenario is less dramatic.

Russia has only to wait for a change in Ukrainian politics. President Yushchenko may be a prominent leader but his long term-durability is not guaranteed. Opinion polls put his popularity at under 10%.

With presidential elections due in 18 months, the Kremlin may well reckon it can look for a more reliable partner in his likely opponent and current Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been remarkably quiet on the Georgia crisis.

Mixed signals from Minsk

But perhaps the most interesting response has come from Belarus and its President, Alexander Lukashenko, sometimes described as "Europe's last dictator".

Only a few years ago Russia was such a close ally, there was talk of the two countries merging, so one might have expected him to back Russia's action in the Caucasus.

But Belarus has had a series of bad-tempered rows with Russia over energy supplies and has recently shown more interest in improving Western contacts.

The initial response from Minsk to Russia's intervention in Georgia was decidedly ambivalent - so much so, that the Russian ambassador there even publicly expressed his displeasure.

President Lukashenko then travelled to Sochi to reassure President Medvedev that Moscow's military operation had been conducted "calmly, wisely and beautifully".

But he took steps to clear the way for better relations with the US and Europe.

In the last few days the final three political prisoners in Belarus have been suddenly released - the beneficiaries, it seems, of an unexpected presidential pardon.

"It's very significant," said Britain's Ambassador to Minsk, Nigel Gould Davies. "For the first time in a decade Belarus does not have any political prisoners."

And watch this space. Whether Belarus is really serious about improving its relations with the West will be tested in September, when it holds parliamentary elections.

Although the table we were brought to was only set up for two, they kindly accommodated me with a small, hard wooden stool to sit on. The manager apologized for the inconvenience and said for being so understanding, he was going to give our table shots on the house. Soon after he led us back to the front of the restaurant and into the Vodka Ice Room. Although I'm not a huge fan of vodka myself, I was rather impressed that in such hot and humid conditions that Hong Kong offers its occupants that a restaurant would dedicate an entire walk-in refrigerator to storing a few shelves of vodka. This and the fact that they had a spot set up for pictures in the Vodka Ice Room are what really made this little gem of a restaurant, an odd one.

I have to give it to Ivan the Kozak for their smooth selection of vodkas. They might, and I repeat might, have changed my mind about drinking vodka. After our visit to the Ice Room we began to enjoy our meal starting with Deruni Minskie, which is basically fried potato cakes served with sour cream. They were quite delicious, not to crisp, not soggy, and seasoned to perfection.  Next we had the Zakuska Po-Suzdalsky which is ox tongue baked in white wine and cheese and served in a hot pot with a baked pastry cover.  The sauce was absolutely amazing, the flavor combinations were incredible.  The tongue was also perfectly prepared, extremely tender and flavorful.

My main course was Utka Zaletnaya (Baked duck with apples, potatoes, and mushrooms).  The duck was slightly overcooked for my taste but was still juicy, and tender.  The apples and mushrooms led to a unique yet tasty flavor combination.

For anyone tired of the typical selection of restaurants found in Hong Kong I highly suggest making your way to Ivan the Kozak.  With their traditional food, decor, and live music, Ivan the Kozak was a wonderful dining experience.

TURNING PAGES

The kind lady agreed to be photographed in front of her little home. She remembered some polish children from the time she was little. Then all the Poles either escaped from the village or were slaughtered by Ukrainians. Today nobody wants to remember about the past. Sad pages of history need to be turned. But never forgotten, when writing new.

Poles and Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes. This is a touching moment - two people a Ukrainian and a Polish Woman talk about the past. They understand eachother perfectly, they even do not need to talk, they simply know - although they met recently.

With that said I had a pretty interesting week.  Wednesday evening our neighbor came up and knocked on our door.  She is Russian and was trying to explain something to us (In Russian).  All I could understand was "No gas, ...tomorrow...9am.....11am...."  Which is all I needed to know, but she was very frustrated I could tell because of our confused looks.  They are doing construction on our building and needed to repair some of the pipes.

Yesterday, I had another fun experience.  We visited a orphanage as a possibility for future ministry.  We took our tutor, Snezhana, to a nearby town (1 1/2 hour - bus ride) where we met her friend and met with the assistant director of the orphanage.  Snezhana translated for us.  As we were leaving, I thought I would impress my tutor and our new friends by saying "it was nice to meet you, and thank you" in Ukrainian.  The assistant director smiled and said something to Snezhana, to which they laughed.  She said that we need to learn the different dialects of our region (Transcarpathia) because she isn't Ukrainian.  But Snezhana was pleased.

When we returned home from our outing, our landlord was coming down our stairs.  We haven't seen or heard from her since February when we paid for our first 3 months rent.  We knew that she would be by soon for the next three but were unsure when.  She is Hungarian, and of course speaks, you guessed it, Hungarian!  She quickly had me go with her to the attic area.  She showed me that our cistern (water storage device - we only have city water certain parts of the day and the cistern is what we use when the city water is shut off) was leaking and that the surrounding overflow was full of water.  She used a lot of sign language to explain that we need to let our sinks run to drain all the water.  After about an hour we had drained all the water and refilled the cistern.  She told me to check on it to see what the problem was or is.  This was a very fun experience trying to figure out what the heck she was saying and interpreting all the sign language.

Needless to say, I have a lot to learn here.

Я не дарма навела цей витяг із закону, адже він прекрасно демонструє звичний в Україні принцип: спершу укладемо закон, а потім будемо думати, як його дотримуватися. Власне, умова дуже гарна й правильна, але вся проблема в тому, що я не бачила жодного нормативного документа, який би визначав "обсяг, достатній для спілкування". Це скільки слів? Які граматичні норми? Так само, я не бачила жодного підручника, котрий би орієнтувався на певний обсяг чи автори якого пропонували б свій необхідний для опанування мови лексичний та граматичний мінімум. Отже, якщо чогось не існує, то чому б не створити це самій? :)

Тема моєї наукової роботи: Викладання української мови для іноземців. Я хочу створити навчальний комплекс для того, щоб будь-яка людина, незалежно від того, з якої вона країни, могла б вивчити українську мову для спілкування чи навчання в Україні. Оскільки не так багато людей опрацьовує цю тему, то з я постійно стикаюся із купою проблем. Зараз головна проблема, яку я розв"язую - це виділення лексичного мінімуму, на базі якого б можна розробити курс української мови.

Light that gives life

About living on sunlight, energy of space and liquid nutrition a healer from Zaporozhye

The Sun is the source of life on Earth, there is no doubt about it. But can man live without roughage, on sunlight, energy of space and liquid nutrition? Yes, he can! A healer from Zaporozhye called Nikolay Dolgorukiy is an example of this.

Among people who are interested in bioenergy, extrasensory things and magic as well as in alternative scientific literature there is information about individuals who eat nothing but sunlight and Cosmic energy. They are referred to as suneaters - people who are living on sunlight. In the country of yogis India there are many of them, in the USA and Europe there are some, in the CIS there are only a few.

That's why it is even more surprising that there is a suneater in Zaporozhye who lives (what a fantastic coincidence!) at 1 Sunny Str. The yard of his house, facing the Red Water and an intersection of several streets of Zeleniy Yar, can be seen from afar thanks to a number of pyramidal structures. The pyramids built by Nikolay Dolgorukiy have healing properties and are energetically connected with similar constructions in Egypt and on Mars. But we are not going to speak of them now, we are going to speak of this unique person who has learnt to live without roughage.

Nikolay was born in Zaporozhye in 1957, graduated from a technical college, worked in the North. He devoted himself to spiritual perfection at the age of 33. But it had begun long before that.

Nikolay Dolgorukiy: "When I was 10, my brother died; at the age of 16 I lost my father. These tremendous losses were leading me to the understanding of some truth, to something I could not grasp… In 1972 I came upon a rare copy of a book on hatha yoga. And I started working on myself. I read, collected newspaper and magazine clips, studied oriental martial arts, phytotherapy, psychology… In 1993 I graduated from the University majoring in Bioenergy Information Science and Psychocorrection. Since 1989 I kept a light Christian fast - I did not eat animal food, I ate mostly vegetables. And since 25 August 2003 I have not eaten roughage…"

- What do you live on?

- I gaze at the sun, for more than five hours a day. My record is 13 hours… I go barefoot, sleep outside or in one of the pyramids both in summer and in winter. I drink milk, cacao, tea with honey, vegetable broths, juices. I drink only "charged" water (almost boiling). The energy of the Sun and Space, the capacities of our body regarding photosynthesis and liquid nutrition are enough for me. I even feel my blood renovate.

- Do you have any health problems?

- At first I lost 5-7 kg, but now my weight is OK. I do hard physical work (during our conversation Nikolay was digging a pit to build a new energy chamber). I always ride a bike. There are no problems.

- What about your eyes? One can lose his eyesight gazing at the sun for many hours, can't he?

- As you can see, I have excellent eyesight, I can read well. It is important to do everything gradually and with the help of God.

- But books are not enough to pass on sunlight, energy of space and liquid nutrition, right?

- One must have an aspiration and a connection with God. All my actions are guided by God. I get information about what to do and how to do it as if through an interface. It requires only darkness and silence.

- But you also have a gift...

- Everyone has a gift. Anyone can pass on sunlight, energy of space and liquid nutrition. I don't have secrets. I am eager to undergo a medical checkup that will allow to study the phenomenon of living on sunlight, energy of space and liquid nutrition. In fact, I am happy that there are followers. I am willing to share my knowledge but not with idle curious people, I am willing to share it with those who want to change themselves, those who "aspire"…

According to Nikolay Dolgorukiy, such portal opened on his plot of land thanks to years of hard work. No wonder that every plant grows wildly around it, and a person who visits this place is cured. Nikolay assures that it is not he who heals but the higher powers. His only task is to create conditions for this. With this purpose he has built pyramids and energy chambers (whose shape activates the Space energy regenerating all the human organs and cells).

But not only for this. Man must clarify the Earth around him. In this case life will change for the better. "That's exactly what I do: I build pyramids, plant trees along the Red Water, says Nikolay. The humankind will become closer to Nature if we unite our efforts…" The most amazing thing is that environmental problems do not prevent Nikolay doing what he does: they can be solved. On the contrary: Zaporozhye has been created for contact with God, in particular it can be explained by the presence of Khortitsa, by the fact that magicians, Cossacks lived here once; they were probably ancestors of Nikolay Dolgorukiy and passed their gift on to him. Native land and the Sun feed man with their power. The only thing one must have for this is love. And if we think it over, that's the way it should be!

Nikolay had personal record in year 2006: non-stop sungazing more than 13 hours — since the sunrise to the sunset.
In 2007 Nikolay Dolgorukiy sungazed with open eyes for 16 hours.
