How To Install Programs In Ubuntu
Ubuntu is very different than Windows as far as installing program

How To Install Programs In Ubuntu

Ubuntu is very different than Windows as far as installing programs.

Most of the time, installing programs in Ubuntu is very very easy.

Applications > Add/Remove... >

Choose:

Supported Applications, All Open Source Applications, Third Party Applications or All Available Applications.

Then add a check to the check box of the application you want to install, click Apply Changes and then Apply and type you password and click Close.

Adding programs does not get much easier than this.

To remove a program un-check the check box.

NOTE: VitalBodies suggests not choosing All Available Applications and third party applications until you have more experience managing and maintaining Ubuntu. In fact, if you are really new, you might want to use only Supported Applications until you are really up and running. See the Final Note (below) for more info.

What if the program you want to install is not on the list?

In short, here are the main ways to add programs:

ADDING PROGRAMS TO UBUNTU:

Ubuntu BackPorts: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports

Compiling From Source: See Program For Details.

3.- Pasamos a instalarlo:

$su
# dpkg -i frostwire-4.17.0.i586.deb

$ froswire

Aqui, ulgunos pantallasos.

Getting help with Xubuntu

Even though I’d very much like to say the opposite, most people will probably need help with X

Even though I'd very much like to say the opposite, most people will probably need help with Xubuntu at some point. Luckily, it is quite easy to find help - you just need to know where to look.

First of all, you need to determine what kind of problem you are having.

Getting started

If you are new to Xubuntu, you will want to read the excellent Xubuntu documentation, that is also shipped with Xubuntu (in version 8.04 it is located under
/usr/share/xubuntu-docs/index.html
). It should be your first stop when trying to figure out how to connect to the internet, how to install applications, and similar basic tasks. All this thanks to the huge, voluntary efforts of the Xubuntu Documentation Team (you can also help out with the Xubuntu documentation yourself!).

Of course, if you want to perform slightly more advanced tasks, such as setting up periodical backups on Xubuntu, the internet is your friend. There are a lot of great resources on the internet that can help you with anything from installing Xubuntu on the Eee PC to browsing Windows network shares with Thunar. However, be sure to double-check which version of Xubuntu the guide is written for. For example, the post on browsing Windows network shares I just linked to is, at the time of writing, a little outdated and contains unnecessary steps.

It is also safest to look for articles written specifically targeting Xubuntu - tutorials aiming at Ubuntu users will often work as well, articles targeting just "Linux" are less likely to result in success.

When you can't find the answer

If you've spent time roaming the dark alleys of the internet, spit through every last bit of Xubuntu's official documentation, but still don't have an answer, there are a number of support options.

One requirement for all these options is that you specify as much information as possible. This includes, but needn't be limited to, the fact that you're running/wanting to run Xubuntu, which version of Xubuntu you're running, what you're problem is, what the expected result is, and perhaps how proficient you are with Xubuntu. This allows other people to help you in the best possible way.

The xubuntu-users mailinglist is, well, a mailinglist for Xubuntu users. All messages sent to a certain email address (
xubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com
in the case of
xubuntu-users
) will be delivered to everybody who has subscribed to that mailinglist. Thus, if you need help with Xubuntu, you can subscribe to that mailinglist, send an email to that address explaining your problem, and perhaps the next time you check your email, the answer is waiting for you.

You might not have the patience to wait for people to respond, however. If that is the case, fear no more, as IRC comes to the rescue! IRC is a way of being able to communicate in real time with other people - in other words, a chatbox. First you need an application to talk IRC - Xchat, DarkIRC, whatever, it shouldn't really matter. Using your IRC client, you need to connect to a network - FreeNode (on
irc.freenode.net
) in this case. Once you're connected to the network, you need to join the appropriate chatroom (how old-school is that?) - the Xubuntu support room (or channel in IRC lingo) is
#xubuntu
. You can join by typing
/join #xubuntu
.

Once you're in - ask away! Be sure to be polite, not to spam the channel, and realize that, if nobody answers, probably nobody knows. Don't ask the same question over and over again.

It is no secret, however, that the Xubuntu community is not quite the size of the Ubuntu community. Luckily, many people in the Ubuntu community can also help you with your Xubuntu problems if nobody in the Xubuntu community can. The place to get help from the Ubuntu community is the Ubuntu forums. With a very large amount of active members, your question is very likely to find an answer here.

Another place to get help is at Launchpad answers, which is part of Launchpad, a project management website where Ubuntu is managed. Here, you'll be more likely to find developers, who are most likely to be able to help you.

When there is no answer

Even with this vast range of support options, some problems are just errors in the software - so called bugs. These can be reported at bugs.ubuntu.com, where a developer can look at it and, if you're lucky, provide a fix for you and other users to enjoy.

Conclusion

Of course, there will still be times when no answer can be found. However, after having read this article, you'll hopefully be able to better find help yourself. And of course, if you cannot find help, feel free to ask me - I may not be able to provide an answer, but I might be able to give you some pointers.

According to the Direct2Dell website, the dudes at Dell have announced that you can get the Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) flavor of LINUX on the XPS M1330N and Inspiron 1525N notebooks as well as the Inspiron 530N desktop. But apparently there's more coming:

"In early August, we will also add the XPS M1530n and Studio 15n to the line-up. This is just in time for LinuxWorld where we will participate in a number of the conference sessions. That will be your chance to hear directly about what’s been accomplished over the last year and where we see it going in 2009."

It's nice to see a mainstream computer company step up to the plate and support LINUX. But I do have one question. Right now if I phone Dell, they are versed in the hardware and supporting the Windows install that comes with it. Will the same hold true for LINUX? After all, you'll likely to attract some LINUX newbies who don't know a bash shell from a DOS prompt. They're likely to require more hand holding than the average Windows user. My feeling is yes, but I'd love to know for sure. Anyone from Dell care to comment as I do know that people from Dell read my blog?

Now that the server has been delivered, care of the wonderful men and women at NCIX, and delivered by the people who don't make left-hand turns, I'll describe what operating system I have selected the server, as well as the other options available to me. Note that, to be fair, I have included Windows, but only for comparison purposes; I would never actually run a Windows server by choice.

Essentially, what I'm looking for first is excellent hardware support. This immediately clears out the options of compiling a custom operating system, a BSD system, or OpenSolaris, though both are good, robust, and reliable systems.

This now reduces the set of choices to three (but technically two) operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Debian-based Linux, and Red Hat-based Linux.

The reasons for not choosing Windows should be obvious, especially so for you, my dear reader. Despite this, Windows continues to be chosen again and again by consumer and business alike. The hardware support (achieved rather imfamously) is really the only reason why this operating system is listed. Anything else Microsoft Windows can do has been supported for years in UNIX-based systems.

For me, the choice between different Linux operating systems have either been Red Hat-based (using RPM packages) and Debian-based (using deb packages). Between these two choices, I have found CentOS and Ubuntu to be the most popular, and most supported.

CentOS, being a binary clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, offers a more commercial avenue for an operating system. Using a more stable version as opposed to bleeding edge has both advantages and disadvantages. However, what makes Ubuntu stand out is the sizable user community, and the extremely large repositories of programs.

While the server is ultimately Ubuntu-bound, simply for the reasons listed above, I would like to make a note that each of the operating systems compared are all valid choices.

Ubuntu, the leading Linux distribution at the time of this writing has two versions: a desktop version, and a server version. This blog's server will be running the server version, which by default has no graphical interface. In further posts, I will include command-line arguments, and useful command-line programs. If you wish to follow along with your own computer, this is probably not the best place to start with Linux. For that, I encourage you to frequent community forums and documentation. For anyone who's already got a handle on Linux's CLI, you might pick up a few useful tips from later posts.

In the next few posts, I will detail the assembly and installation of the server. Expect photos!

TELNET is a client-server protocol, based on a reliable connection-oriented transport. Typically this protocol used to establish a connection to TCP port 23, where a getty-equivalent program (telnetd) is listening, although TELNET predates TCP/IP and was originally run on NCP.

Install telnetd server

$ sudo apt-get install telnetd

Restart inetd service:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/openbsd-inetd restart

You should now be able to telnet to the server from Windows or Linux desktop system to Ubuntu Linux telnet server. Type the following command to connect to
Telnet server:

$ telnet ubuntu-linux-server-ip

$ telnet 192.168.1.200

$ telnet ubuntu.domain.com

1. Download driver webcam untuk Linux di http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/

2. Extract hasil download tadi :

$ tar zxvf qc-usb-X.XX.tar.gz

3. Masuk ke direktori hasil extract tadi :

$ cd ~/[path]/qc-usb-X.XX/

4. Jalankan perintah make :

$ make

5. Setelah melakukan langkah 4, jalankan file quickcam.sh :

$ ./quickcam.sh

$ xawtv -noscale -noxv -c ""

In a missive on the Linux kernel developers' mailing lists Thursday, he called OpenBSD fans "masturbating monkeys" who focus on security "to the point where they pretty much admit that nothing else matters to them." Today in the same venue (but quoted from a different site because ... well, that's where I found it first), he poked fun at Digg users: "PS. And to get wider distribution for this message: Digg users - you're all a bunch of Wanking Walruses. And you can quote me on that." That got him 1071 Diggs ... or over 400 less than the OpenBSD comment received.

Wanking Walrus ... gods, don't let Mark Shuttleworth hear that or he'll use that for the April 2009 release of Ubuntu.

UFRaw is a free converter for RAW images. Like so many others it is based on DCRaw. The latest official release is from late 2007. This is more or less what is provided by Ubuntu.

The current CVS holds a few interesting additions, most noticeable the use of lensfun for doing lens corrections. There is a demo.

The following steps made the CVS compile for me. The result will be placed within the confines of /opt/ufraw-cvs/ and dpkg.

First we need to get the lensfun packages. I found some at this location. Add the following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list (use su to become a privileged user):

# lensfun
deb http://mirror.pcode.nl/ubuntu/ hardy lensfun

Next, install needed deb packages:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install lensfun-data lensfun-manual liblensfun0 liblensfun0-dev
sudo apt-get install libgtkimageview-dev libgtkimageview0

In case you don’t have a /opt directory:

sudo mkdir /opt

Then build the programs:

cd /tmp
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@ufraw.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/ufraw login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@ufraw.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/ufraw co ufraw
cd ufraw
./autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=/opt/ufraw-cvs
make
sudo make install

And you should then be able to run UFRaw:

/opt/ufraw-cvs/bin/ufraw
