Toledo's map comes as close to a labyrinth as possible without deliberate planning. Well, maybe it was deliberate planning, I don't know. I usually considering myself being good in orienting myself but after failing twice in finding what I was looking for by walking simply in the right direction, I decided to strictly follow the map. The challenge is that you have to blindly trust the map. If you say first left and then second right, take the second right even if it's just 60 cm wide and rather looks like a cul-de-sac.

A part from this, it's of some advantage if you don't mind stairs and a lot of walking up, down, down, up, etc. It's a rather sportive challenge visiting Toledo throughout in a day. But it's beautiful. The best part is actually just walking through the city and see all these nice little, twisted streets and amazing buildings which very often look like Art Nouveau though I'm not sure if this is not the Muslim influence.

Not that there is much of Muslim culture left. Actually, Toledo has the highest percentage of churches, convents or other religious buildings per square-meter, I've ever seen in life. In almost every corner of the street you run into a church. But from one of the churches (I just can't remember which one) you have undeniably a great view over the city.

He remembered the words and shared that, to collect the prize, delivered his driver, Prince Aga Khan, who said that "Toledo has managed to preserve the legacy and the glorious intellectual adventure that Arabs, Christians and Jews knew how to create, from his personality , "And that resulted in" prosperity, harmony, scientific, philosophical knowledge and artistic creativity. "

This same philosophy, has stressed Maranon, which is chaired today the opening of the exhibition "Geographies of Islam. Works of Islamic Art Museum Aga Khan," which, according to Luis Monreal, shows not only the diversity of Islam, but its breadth timeline.

Seventeen of the nation's 50 largest cities had high school graduation rates lower than 50 percent, with the lowest graduation rates reported in Detroit, Indianapolis and Cleveland, according to a report.

The report, issued by America's Promise Alliance, found that about half of the students served by public school systems in the nation's largest cities receive diplomas. Students in suburban and rural public high schools were more likely to graduate than their counterparts in urban public high schools, the researchers said.

Nationally, about 70 percent of U.S. students graduate on time with a regular diploma and about 1.2 million students drop out annually.

"When more than 1 million students a year drop out of high school, it's more than a problem, it's a catastrophe," said former Secretary of State Colin Powell, founding chair of the alliance.

There were some amazing women there who had won the battle with breast cancer and there were families and friends there to support them. And there were families and friends of ladies who did not win the battle. It was a very touching event. The survivors wore pink bibs to indicate who they were and boy they were everywhere. They said this event drew over 17,000 runners and walkers. It was definitely a big one. Much bigger than I expected. I'm clueless on my time for this race because in the massive amount of people at the start line I couldn't get to the right to step on the chip pad to activate the chip on my shoe. That was a bummer but oh well. I'm sure I was around the 30 minute mark. I had a kink in my side for half of the race and that is totally my fault because I only ran 1 time last week. These 2 weeks are my newspaper weeks and this month I have 4 of them I'm working on so running has not been priority. Hopefully next week will prove to be more productive since the last paper is to the printer on Friday. I have photos to upload but those will come later. I'm in the middle of moving files from my old mac to my new one and will be uploading pics from the camera once the migration is done. Check back soon. Hopefully they will be up tomorrow!

iBuenas tardes, Americanos!

I am currently in Toledo, Spain. I was in Madrid for two days... What a big city filled with LOTS of people! Saw many castles, royal palaces, cathedrals, monasteries and tombs. So much history!!!

[caption id="attachment_78" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Toledo's old defense city wall"][/caption]

I am liking Toledo even more so far. It's a quaint, romantic, little town. Much smaller than Madrid. Cobblestone streets, grand buildings made of limestone and big cement bricks. Terraces outside every window, flower boxes on each, laundry hanging out to dry... just like a picture. Many, many adorable cafes, cervezarias, taperias.

The food is..... interesting. It seems to me that Spanish people like to make meals out of appetizers (tapas en Espanol). (Actually, this makes sense to me. I find myself doing the same thing whenever I am at a buffet or catered event back home.) Fried Spanish croquettes, mini sausages on toothpicks, ham, chorizo, many different types of cheese and bread, pork, paella, ham, meatballs, squid, pan con tomate, mini chicken skewers, jamon, spiced clams, gazpacho... Yup. Ham is definitely the meat of choice here in Spain. Sangria is, of course, the drink of choice. (And now, I understand why!)

Water is not usually just given when you sit down at a restaurant and food is not that important. You eat to stay alive, but meals are not a livelihood. Rather, folks here focus on spending time with friends and family on a regular basis (5-6 nights a week). Visiting over some tapas or coffee is very common.

Grapes have seeds in them.

Croissants are part of almost every meal.

Electricity is conserved.

Mosques, churches and temples are mere blocks from one another.

Ketchup costs money, unless you are at McDonald's.

Gouda cheese is EVERYWHERE. (You would love that, Dad!)

I now know I do not like Gouda cheese.

Spaniards talk with a lisp. It's not hot. It's confusing.

Tipping at restaurants is not required or even expected. Ordering in Spanish kinda is.

People here have heard of Pita Jungle??? (You could be a celebrity, Nick!)

Drinking on the streets is permitted. (So, I thought of Mike.)

People don't start eating dinner until 10pm. You don't eat breakfast till about 9:30am.

Lunch is the biggest meal of the day.

Internet is not nearly as important as it is in the States. Sometimes, it's non-existent.

Adults are out pushing their kids on a park swing on a weekday during "business hours."

Many Spaniards are white.

Very white.

I've almost gotten hit by a car or moped three times already.

[caption id="attachment_80" align="alignleft" width="72" caption="A Toledo church"][/caption]

The night life is ALWAYS going... everybody drinks. (Lorena! Ven en diciembre con Jamilah, chica loquita!)

And none of the businesses really seem to count their money... or write anything down. (So, I don't think you'd like to be an accountant here, Aunt Pam.)

Anyways, it's shower time. I leave for Barcelona manana. After that, no more four-star hotels... I'll be living en una casa con mi mama espanola, Consuelo, y su perro quien tiene 10 anos. (Don't tell Bubba, Dad.)

All my love and inshallah I hope you are all doing well back home.

iHasta luego!

Last night, we got in to Toledo. It's a medieval city that has recently been noted world-wide for it's historic, cultural, and monumental importance.

Toledo was the first capital of imperial Spain.

It was also THE PLACE for coexistence between Christian, Jewish, and Muslim religious communities.

You can walk from one side of town to the other in about 25 minutes.

While there, I saw:

It was built to commemorate their victory in la Batalla del Toro.

One unique one has turned up...This year Butterfly House in Whitehouse, OH has created a 16 acre corn maze featuring VP Candidate Sarah Palin. Duke Wheeler owner, of Butterly House was hoping to generate some excitement for this years maze. The Butterfly House is an indoor garden filled with butterfly's and an adjacent farm. No word on what the price to walk the maze is.

The Obama - Biden Laugh Track Strategy
Excerpt: Joe Biden got this new laugh track strategy started

The Obama - Biden Laugh Track Strategy

Excerpt: Joe Biden got this new laugh track strategy started last week here in the battleground state of Ohio during an impromptu rope line debate in Maumee, right outside Toledo. When Biden was asked by a supporter why his ticket was supporting clean coal he responded that he was for it - as long as it was done in China, not the US:

“We’re not supporting ‘clean coal.’ Guess what. China’s building two every week. Two dirty coal plants. And it’s polluting the United States. It’s causing people to die…No coal plants here in America. Build them, if they’re going to build them over there make ‘em clean because they’re killing you.”

Now this “no coal plants here in America” joke is particularly funny because Ohio ranks third nationally in the use of coal and 87 percent of the state’s electricity comes from coal, mostly mined in Ohio. And Ohioans have few other energy resources available beyond coal. In the event of an Obama-Biden win on November 4th, the joke will be on Buckeye State families already feeling the pinch at the gas pump to find their electricity costs skyrocket while Chinese families laugh at their distress.

Adding to the hilarity is that the Obama campaign website promises that they will push for clean coal - the same technology that Biden wants limited to China. And as Politico observes, Biden was praising the virtues of coal technologies to an audience of coal mine workers in Castlewood, VA just a few days ago. At least no one can accuse Obama-Biden of letting their act get old.

But the Democratic duo keeps them coming faster than Abbott and Costello.

Take for instance Barack Obama’s “who’s on first” gag with Matt Lauer during an interview that aired Tuesday morning. After criticizing John McCain for coming out against the AIG bailout last week, Lauer asked about his own vice presidential candidate taking the exact same position not three minutes after McCain made his remarks. The laughable result was Barack Obama spinning faster than a frog in a blender, saying that running mate Biden - a 36 year Senate veteran - needed to consult with the straight man first before stating his opinions.

Joe Biden is definitely the Robin Williams of this campaign cycle, showing off his improv chops to Katie Couric while riding the campaign bus through the Ohio countryside last Thursday. In what is sure to become a stand-up classic, Biden called the Obama campaign ad mocking John McCain’s computer skills “terrible”, but then came out a few hours later and said that he had never seen the attack ad. Apparently Biden hasn’t heard of these things called “computers” to see what his own campaign is putting out.

He then followed that one up with a gut-busting one-liner about how Franklin D. Roosevelt handled the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 by going on TV to tell his fellow Americans how it happened. The unspoken punch line is, of course, that FDR wasn’t even president in 1929, and he didn’t make his first TV appearance until a decade later in 1939.

And no doubt they are rolling in the aisles back home in Scranton, PA over his recent sight gag, asking Missouri State Senator Chuck Graham to get up out of his wheelchair.

The Barack Obama and Joe Biden ticket certainly makes for great family entertainment, but they are beginning to learn that it’s hard to keep an audience, as Obama found out earlier this week in Green Bay, WI, where 4,000 less people showed up than a McCain-Palin rally there just a few days before. Unfortunately for the Democratic duo, many Americans are already in on the joke.

One of the fascinating aspects of Spain is the contrasting styles of architecture (among other things). In my travels, I've noted the amalgamation and integration of styles in the various significant buildings. I've selected two old photographs (taken between 1860 and 1880) which demonstrate this reality. The first is a shot taken at the Mezquita in Cordoba.

This old photo illustrates the "mudejar" arch, which was built by the Moors who controlled Spain for a time. After the unification of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabel, the mosque in Cordoba became a cathedral. Nonetheless, much of the original structure remained. In fact, when visiting the Mezquita, you'll see that it appears as if a cathedral was inserted into the mosque. These arches stretch out in all directions giving an infinite feel to the space. On the other hand, if you travel to Toledo's cathedral, you'll see an example of high gothic construction like this:

Here you see the massive columns, vaulted cielings, and pointed windows that are hallmarks of the style. Both of these cathedrals are used for religious services to this day, which testifies to the endurance of the Spanish in their faith. It also stands as a testament to the builders of these structures. There are exhibits which show the techniques employed, which while primitive by today's standards, were state of the art at the time. A fascinating case contains several cut blocks bearing the initials and personal marks of the masons who shaped them. These letters speak for them, as if to say, "I was here. I helped to build this."

A note about photography when traveling... these days I tote my little digital camera with me just about everywhere. I take a few shots here and there. However, I find those glossy books designed for tourists to contain some of the best photography of typical sites like cathedrals, palaces, cityscapes and so on. I purchase them frequently because the photography within is much better than the results that could be achieved in the short time of a typical visit. Don't hesitate to buy them. They're cheap compared to what it costs to get such great photos.
