New York, NY July 18, 2008 -- Approximately 500 Tibetan and Western Buddhists engaged in a peaceful demonstration today outside of Radio City Music Hall as the Dalai Lama gave his public talks. This group, the Western Shugden Society (WSS), say they are demonstrating to question the Dalai Lama's unexamined actions and wishing to be heard since the Dalai Lama has repeatedly refused requests for dialog. The demonstrators spent 6 hours chanting "Dalai Lama Give Religious Freedom" and "Dalai Lama Stop Lying" in Tibetan and English to draw attention to their cause.

The demonstrators remained peaceful even after the Dalai Lama's public address finished and throngs of people in traditional Tibetan outfits poured onto the streets, at which time 40-50 police were brought in including 6 on horseback to control the group of thousands who were now surrounding the demonstrators.

Police erected metal barriers to push the crowds back. Some of them had to be physically restrained and forced to the ground as the aggressors began throwing objects, including bags of coins and bottles, spitting at, and yelling at the demonstrators.

The demonstrators remained contained, cooperated with police and agreed at the suggestion of the police to be evacuated with escort from the area while 6th Avenue was blocked off for 20 minutes during rush hour. They were told by police that this was necessary as it would have taken many hours to disperse the crowds.

Kelsang Pema, spokesperson for the WSS, says, "If this intense reaction and mob mentality is the result when a few people publicly question the Dalai Lama's actions on American soil with police present and western laws, imagine how difficult it is for these people to speak up against their unelected leader in the Tibetan community in exile. I hope that the western media will investigate."

Warum machen die Deutschen so was?

Press release from prweb.com

"This Saturday, 600 Buddhists with one voice will protest against the Dalai Lama claiming a campaign of religious intolerance and immoral discrimination against the Buddhist community who practice the protective deity Dorje Shugden. This Western Shugden Society organized demonstration hopes to expose the abuse of the Dalai Lama's dual political and religious status, by which all Tibetan-exiles must take a public oath to abandon this spiritual practice as well as association with anyone who practices this 400 year old Buddhist Deity, in order to receive a state issued identity card. Without this identity card it is difficult and sometimes impossible to purchase food in many stores, receive medical treatment, and obtain travel documents. The protests is scheduled to take place Saturday, July 19th and promises to be colorful and lively event, with passionate Tibetan and English chant and bright placards spotting the crowd."

So

I enjoyed this book for the backdrop being set in Tibet. It was a just long enough at only 240ish pages. This book could have been drawn out to 300+ pages and it would have been a horrible read. Too many books seem to run long just so they have a heavy book. You can most ideas across in half the pages.

Rama 2 - Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee

I am on third book in this series, so far the first two have held my interest. This book was almost a let down for me.The first book was meant to be a stand alone, so the 2nd took sometime to pick up. You could read this book without ever reading the first, but you still should. The subject in this book deals with subjects in the future that could happen today. If you missed this series the first time around do your self a favor in get to reading.

I also noticed the cover of Rama 2 reminds me of the L.H.C[gallery]

The Dalai Lama says "it's totally wrong, unfair" to call Islam a violent religion.

The Tibetan spiritual leader, appearing at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, offered a defence of Islam in response to a question about the rise of violent religious fundamentalism.

The Dalai Lama arrived at Lehigh on Thursday for a series of talks on a 600-year-old Buddhist text. He took a break on Sunday to lecture on "Generating a Good Heart" and then took questions from Lehigh President Alice Gast that had been submitted in advance by the public.

Asked why so many Americans were depressed and anxious, he joked: "I'm the wrong person to ask. You should ask Americans."

But he added that US society was too competitive and people always wanted "something more, something more, something more".

The Dalai Lama, who attracted a capacity crowd of about 5000, did not mention next month's Beijing Olympics.

The Chinese Government has demanded that the Dalai Lama express support for the Olympics and repudiate efforts to disrupt them as a condition for continued talks.

China has ruled Tibet since the 1950s. The Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid a failed uprising in 1959, has said he wants some form of autonomy that would allow Tibetans to freely practise their culture, language and religion.

The Dalai Lama, who turned 73 on July 6, said that he was looking forward to "complete retirement". He joked that he is now considered a "senior most respected adviser" to Tibet's government in exile.

He is scheduled to speak at the Kimmel Centre in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

"As this State Department internal memo reveals, the Dalai Lama at one time took $180,000 a year from the CIA for his living expenses. and $1.5 million a year from the spy agency to finance Tibetan guerrilla operations against the Chinese, which included, running a covert guerrilla training center in Colorado."

For hundreds of years competing Tibetan Buddhist sects engaged in bitterly violent clashes and summary executions. In 1660, the 5th Dalai Lama was faced with a rebellion in Tsang province, the stronghold of the rival Kagyu sect with its high lama known as the Karmapa. The 5th Dalai Lama called for harsh retribution against the rebels, directing the Mongol army to obliterate the male and female lines, and the offspring too “like eggs smashed against rocks…. In short, annihilate any traces of them, even their names.” 7

In 1792, many Kagyu monasteries were confiscated and their monks were forcibly converted to the Gelug sect (the Dalai Lama’s denomination). The Gelug school, known also as the “Yellow Hats,” showed little tolerance or willingness to mix their teachings with other Buddhist sects. In the words of one of their traditional prayers: “Praise to you, violent god of the Yellow Hat teachings/who reduces to particles of dust/ great beings, high officials and ordinary people/ who pollute and corrupt the Gelug doctrine.” 8 An eighteenth-century memoir of a Tibetan general depicts sectarian strife among Buddhists that is as brutal and bloody as any religious conflict might be. 9 This grim history remains largely unvisited by present-day followers of Tibetan Buddhism in the West.

It's about time somebody goes after these killers! How can the world community just sit around and watch the others continue their killing, torture, cultural genocide of people in the name of their so called progress. Progress isn't about killing and genocide. Progress is about respecting every one and every thing, but learning as you move on with every individual having freedom and doing no harm.

The International People need to press for the capture of more criminals like these.

On Monday, the International Criminal Court indicted Sudan's President Omar Al Bashir for genocide. He is charged with killing hundreds of thousands of people in Sudan and its Darfur region, and corralling the surviving women and girls into terrifying camps where they are being quietly and systematically raped until their peoples are destroyed.

In response, Al Bashir's regime is threatening more terror against Darfurians and the UN, and appealing to powerful international friends who buy oil from and sell weapons to Sudan to give him protection. Al Bashir knows that he will be caught only if other governments, especially Arab and African governments, agree to help the International Criminal Court (for example by arresting him when he travels abroad).

Targeting Al Bashir is our best hope to end the terror of Darfur's rape camps, and take a major step forward for international justice. Many of Sudan's neighbours are Muslim countries where rape is a scandalous crime – and Al Bashir's henchmen have killed and raped thousands of Muslim women. To raise awareness of this, Avaaz is launching a large regional ad campaign, urging leaders to help the ICC. Our ads will run in just a few days, and a full page ad in an Egyptian newspaper is just 3000Euros($5000), so we need just 50,000 Euros ($75,000) to get our message across. Click below to help:

"The new wall at Ganden monastery in Southern India was built in March of this year. It has no gate, no entryway along its entire length. It is designed only to separate, to divide monk from monk; it even blocks access to the old road. It stands 9 feet tall and is made of concrete bricks. Visually, it is attractive in the same architectural style as the monastery, however, it’s appearance is deceptive and hides a sinister purpose. Each brick is an eerie symbol of inhumanity and hatred, instilled on the basis of religious belief by one person’s lies. The wall lies on the brown dusty earth—the very earth on which we all stand equal as human beings, each with the basic right to hold the faith of our choosing. It rises, row by row, into our common sky—the vast common canopy into which all can gaze, uplifting the mind beyond the mundane to the infinite and even the holy.

Brevemente.. a PARTE III!

Thanks to onejustworld, for providing me with resources for the Chinese-Tibet conflict. My goal

Thanks to onejustworld, for providing me with resources for the Chinese-Tibet conflict. My goal is to read as much unbiased information as possible and try to come to a conclusion based on a logical decision, rather than emotional.

Thus far, historically, it still seems as if it's not "case closed" on either side. Especially when compared to other similar histories. Meaning, if you looked at historical precedent, there seems to be enough to justify the Chinese claim to authority over Tibet. This doesn't mean they deserve it, or Tibet shouldn't be free. It means, that comparing the Chinese-Tibetan history to other histories, it isn't so clear cut.

For example, in one of the resources pointed out to me is an article called, "Is Tibet Entitled to Self-Determination?" the author, Paul Harris, says:

The official position of the Chinese Government on this issue is that Tibet is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China (just as France once claimed that Algeria was an inalienable part of Metropolitan France).

These two histories aren't comparable. First, France never had a geographic claim like China has. Second, Algeria had been colonized by the Ottomans, and then taken from the French. It was pretty obvious that the French "took over" Algeria. The same cannot be said for China and Tibet.

So, historically, it's a draw so far as I can tell. I'm still reading.

But here is where I think Tibet does have a justified claim to independence, an argument I haven't seen anywhere, so it's probably a weak argument.

Though the Chinese-Tibetan history goes further back than any of the conflicts Russia had with her satellite states during the Soviet Union timer period, I think there's a logical argument to be made here.

As soon as the Soviet government fell apart, these satellite states ran through the gateway of sovereignty. History wouldn't have mattered because to the people of the time, they wanted to rule their own nation. It didn't take long at all for other nations to recognize these new nations either. Even the USSR recognized it only a month after the Estonia's declared independence.

Thus, I believe if communist rule in China ended, Tibet and other current Chinese territories would claim their independence like Macau or Sichuan? I'm sure the leaders in China believe this too, which is why they've been so hostile towards Tibet, and have tried to "breed" out the Tibetan culture.

Again, I'm still reading the history, but pragmatism tells me that Tibet should be free.

5

Ficam as perguntas:

- E possível manter-se isento desta máquina e ainda assim continuar consumindo os irresistíveis produtos "Made in China" e o novíssimo "Mc-não-sei-das-quantas"?

Press Release from prweb.com

"This Thursday, 600 Tibetan and western Buddhists from around the world, including 200 monastics, join with one voice to demonstrate against the Dalai Lama outside of Radio City in NYC where he will be speaking. In this unprecedented event, more than 100 Tibetans will participate in the Western Shugden Society (WSS) organized protest to speak out against the man who has been touted as an icon of peace and tolerance." Impassioned Buddhist Protest the Dalai Lama on the Streets of NYC

Many Tibetans are now feeling very encouraged by the success of the Western Shugden Society demonstrations. Most Tibetan Shugden practitioners are too intimidated by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in Exile to protest against the Dalai Lama. However, the number of Tibetans at the demonstrations is increasing rapidly. A Tibetan Geshe at the recent protests at Lehigh University said "In the Tibetan settelments in India if Tibetans were to protest like this, they would be killed." So it's no wonder that many Tibetans are still too intimidated to join the protests. But as these protests continue to gain momentum more Tibetans are joining in to request the Dalai Lama to give religious freedom.
