Jennifer Rush a fost penultima artista care a urcat pe scena din Piata Mare - Sibiu. Se pare ca o cunostea destul de multa lume din public, spre surprinderea mea. Ei, se pare ca a fost mare vedeta in anii '80, iar eu m-am nascut abia la sfarsitul anilor '80, asta a fost problema. Mi-au spus ca cel mai cunoscut cantec al ei e "The power of love", piesa pe care a si interpretat-o.

Jennifer a fost foarte apropiata de public si a primit extrem de multe aplauze. A avut un recital ok, desi muzica ei nu e neaparat pe gustul meu. Pacat ca si-a injectat buzele, ca din profil arata ca o caricatura, insa se mentine bine pentru varsta (pentru mine) inaintata pe care o are...desi din punct de vedere fizic, o consider in totalitate o caricatura.

Dupa jump puteti vedea poze din timpul recitalului ei! Urmeaza in putine minute concluziile mele + poze si o mica surpriza de la recitalul Ruslanei, de departe unul deosebit si care a reusit sa le puna in umbra pe toate celelalte!

記得我第一次聽到的版本，是Laura Branigan唱的，聽到的時候其實沒啥感覺，可能是因為我一直不喜歡Laura Branigan帶點哭腔的聲音吧！

說到底，我還是鍾愛Jennifer Rush的原唱版，她的聲音也是很獨特很優的，那卷我從唱片行角落撿起的卡帶，聽過N遍，後來還買了CD，裡面其實芭樂不多，佳作不少，特別推薦另一首芭樂級好歌〈Hero of a Fool〉，點此試聽。

Sharp comments, criticisms and all sorts of sarcasms were constantly flowing from the mother-in-law's mouth. Debate almost took place everyday. Unfortunately, the husband could not do much to improve the situation.

The daughter-in-law seemed unable to sustain her anger anymore. Day to day, taking revenge was poisoning her mind and thoughts. And thus she went to look for his father's best friend who was a medicine seller. And remember, you have to cook the meal yourself", said the medicine seller.

Before she left, the medicine seller added up, "Just to make sure that people will not be suspicious later on, you need to treat your mother-in-law better in days to come, by doing so people will not raise any questions about her death. Treat her with love, respect and show your big heart by not arguing, just giving in to her. Treat your mother-in-law as if she were your own mother."

With such a happier light heart, the woman went home, she obeyed and did whatever the uncle said. Everyday, she spoilt her mother-in-law by cooking all her favorite dishes and served her with all respect and compassion.

Without realizing four months had passed, and a big change took place. Being treated with such respect and affection, the mother-in-law was touched and changed her behaviour towards her. Things turned around, she started to treat her daughter-in-law as her own one and loved her more and more each day. In the presence of her friends, she complimented and spoke highly of her daughter-in-law's nobility and compassion.

Seeing the changes in her mother-in-law's, abruptly the daughter rushed to see the uncle. "Please uncle, give the the antidote to the poison that you gave me sometime ago. After doing what you told me, now my mother-in-law has treated me so well and full of love. I also start loving her. I don't want her die from the poison that I gave her everyday."

The uncle just smiled and answered, "My dear, don't worry. The powder that I gave you was not poison at all. It actually was tonic to enhance body strength instead". She was dumb founded. "So the real poisons actually is what dwells in your head, your attidues towards your mother-in-law. And now all of those poisons have been wiped away by love and affection that you have showered her."

The story above has taught us of how incredible the power of love or the power of affection and tender loving care can be. Love and affection bring about care, sincerity, and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good.

Love and affection can release us from the strong grip of misunderstanding, bring down the wall of coldness, soften the stubbornness and mellow down hatreds. Love and affection invite peace and bring differences into a good harmony. If all of us are willing to give love and affection towards people around us day by day, then life is worth living for.

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

Death often brings about new life. After his near fatal car crash that left him permanently disfigured and emasculated by a significant amount of 3rd degree burns, the unnamed narrator of this novel spent a great deal of his lengthy hospital stay planning his eventual suicide. His life as a porn star and producer of adult films went up in smoke like his skin. He had no interest in making a new life after the death of his good looks and his livelihood - at least not until Marianne Engel, a patient in the hospital's mental health unit, unexpectedly begins visiting his bedside and telling him how their lives have been intertwined now for several hundred years.

The Gargoyle follows the narrator through his hospital recovery and beyond in a compelling way.  While the narrator's salacious past and gruesome present are fascinating, Marianne Engel's stories are poetic, mystical, and engrossing.  I do not want to reveal too much of the plot here.  It's best to go into this book knowing as little as possible. Just expect to go on a ride like no other.  One image that has not left me since reading this book is of the woman who stands watch for an hour each day by the edge of the cliff, never losing hope that her beloved husband will return.  I can smell the salt in the air as the breeze whips her hair about in the wind.  Her anguish makes that story of love all the more beautiful.  There is no down time in this book.  Each section moves the story forward.

Words cannot accurately express how intense and wonderful The Gargoyle is. From the first scenes of the unnamed protagonist's fiery car crash to the conclusion, I was hooked into his world of burnt flesh and the possibility of a love strong enough to be tested by fire over and over again.  It was a pleasure to go to hell and back with Andrew Davidson.  This book is inspiring.  It will encourage its readers to write.  It will encourage its readers to come back again.  Trust me, you definitely must read this book.

In autumn of 2002, as an aspiring 17-year-old singer, I finally decided to make the big move to the UK and really focus on my music career. With nothing to my name but "a voice", I embarked on a journey that would take me to some of the most exciting, thrilling, even somewhat scary places...

On my way to Sheremetyevo International Airport of Moscow, I got an email from DJ Neil "Doctor" Fox, a dear friend, great champion, adviser (you name it!) suggesting that since I was going to be in London anyway, I should pop over to the final off camera audition for an upcoming ITV show called "Pop Idol" - a new television contest that was about to hit primetime TV in the UK for the first time.

I had no idea what the show was all about, so I called Chris Neil, someone I have immense admiration for and really looked up to from day one (he later became my executive producer.) "Just do it, you never know, you have nothing to lose!" he encouraged me during the long-distance call.

As soon as I got off the plane, I literally rushed over to the ITV studios with my dad and a family friend of ours. I barely made it in time for the last call of auditions - and had to talk my way through the security, as I was already too late by then.

It was nothing like what we see on television - completely off camera, intimate, equally stressful but still somewhat relaxed... We made sure that by the time I showed up at the  audition, Foxy was no longer there, so it wouldn't look like a set up or a name-dropping contest.

And there they were: Nicki Chapman from 19 management, Pete Waterman, the producer of Kylie Minogue, among others, and THE Simon Cowell from BMG. I have to admit, at the time, nobody outside of the tight circle of the music business in the UK knew anything about Simon, so to me, he was a complete stranger!

The three potential contestants lined up, I was the last one... Two other girls were sent home within minutes... I got a bit scared, I thought: "That's it, bye-bye, Tinatin!"

By the time it was my turn, I stood center stage in the spotlight and started chatting to the judges, the most charming of whom was Simon, in all honesty. I sang "The Power of Love" and I was amazed when they didn't stop me even when I got through the second verse!

The most critical of the three was definitely Nicki - she said I looked somewhat tired, so in response, I started recounting my flight details, but Simon quickly cut us off: "Come on, Nicki! She has a great voice. You're really good. Tell me more about yourself..."

I must have spent at least half-hour, if not more, just talking about music, who I was planning to work with in London, etc. and Simon and I really clicked. The best part of it was that because at the time Pop Idol was still completely unknown as a project, and so was Simon Cowell to the general public, I didn't feel the need to "please" him or gain his approval - I could be myself and let the rest take care of itself.

It was unanimously decided that I would enter the final selection of contestants before the TV show kicked off (at the time, it was done mostly off camera) - but then Simon verified my citizenship... Oops! "You have to be British in order to qualify, I think, but let me check..." So they looked into the rules and regulations and the contract confirmed his fears - no Russian idols (nor any other nationality) allowed, gotta be a Brit :-(

I was slightly disappointed, especially because I had no clue about the show and who would have known back then that it was going to take over primetime TV!

Instead of worrying about the legalities, Simon immediately suggested that I get Chris Neil, whom he had known for years and who was also about to become my producer, to contact him and arrange an A&R meeting independently (at BMG) outside of the Pop Idol framework.

Before we knew it, Pop Idol took off within a month and Simon Cowell became the biggest TV star in England, so when the meeting was moved once again to January of the following year, Chris and I laughed and politely thanked Simon's assistant.

Although, I have to admit, Simon was the most charming, warm, gracious gentleman, so every time I see the really nasty Simon on American Idol, it makes me smile... He was far from it when I met him, and to be honest, I don't for a second believe he's changed that much - but it's a great TV personality that surely achieves its goal for what it is.

Fond memories, though, I always smile when I remember my Idol experience... Didn't regret it for a second, but on second thought, I don't think I would have signed up for it now, even though it was fun and exciting at the time - and adventurous, too!

So, my dear friends, I did American Idol before it was American Idol - in fact, before it was even on air :-) All the more to tell the grandchildren!

The greatest liberty I ever experienced was the Love of God. It makes me cry, not for sadness but for joy. His love makes me grateful and desiring to love him more fully. Jesus told us that divine love would be His witness through us, to the nations of the world (the Gospel of John, the book of 1 John) One of the earliest accounts of God's covenant love ('chesed' Hebrew) is during Moses' encounter on the Mountain in Exodus 33-34).

Trailer/container in Tanzania. IHOP KC (International House of Prayer) began in a trailer. Only labors of love can endure the humility of small beginnings... which are so easy to overlook with disdain. Many join a ministry when it is 'recognized and sucessful'- few are tempted to join during the first years amidst the fires of vital testing and criticism.

To find a teen's perspective on this book I went to amazon.com and read the book reviews for this book. I found one post by a fourteen-year old readerthat answered some of my questions. This girl loved the book and appreciated the realism in the novel. She says she knows first loves do not last forever and liked that Blume was honest about this as well as the sexual parts of the novel. Although she describes them as "graphic," this girl is glad to learn about "sexual encounters."

I am very glad to see that this girl learned from and enjoyed Forever. Her passionate review of this book has boosted my confidence in the novel. I believe this is an important book for young girls to read in its description of sexual matters as well as for its story. As noted by another lady, contemporary books for teens pale in subject matter when compared to Forever.

So, I must admit, after reading Judy Blume's Forever and after watching the classic 90s hit Little Giants, I'm feeling a little nostalgic.  Our class discussion last week sparked a lot new "threads" in the complex machine world of my mind.  Our main focus, though sometimes spiraling out of control, was focused around the question, "to whom is Chick Lit trying to sell?"  You see, we decided that one of the scary and definitely unfortunate differences between today's Chick Lit and the Chick Lit of yesteryear (or rather during its infant stages in the 70s and early 80s) is that now Chick Lit has become just another way to rake in the dolla dolla bills, ya'll.  As is the whole publishing industry.  Ouch!

We discussed the fact that now, when a writer wants to publish his or her work, the first question begged is not "who will read your book?" but instead "who will buy this?"  So what we're saying is that book buying is not about consumption in terms of the book's material, but instead about a book's sheer purchase power.

That is to say, the difference between books like Blume's and those of the last (half?) decade is content.  To me, Forever was written to communicate a message.  It's content poses those questions that, at the time, were continuously being swept under the door mat.  Questions about love and sex, and teenagers making their own, adult choices in such terms.  Chick Lit today, as my class discussed, seems much more about name dropping - chic restaurants, stores, celebs etc. - in order to catch the eye of anyone who might be willing to spend the fifteen dollars for the book, thirty for the hard copy.

Recently our blog had a very interesting comment in response to Sattie's Post: A Good Man is Hard to Buy and given my interest in aging I thought I would reflect on its powerful nature.

Cesar Calva posted:

"The stories you provide lack the maturity of an 81 year old widow who had 43 years of happiness at the side of his elected wife. To begin with we met in a cemetery of our grandparents grave. She was 11 years old, I was 19, the tomb her family visited was one tomb from that of our grandparents. I saw her and her family sitting and looked at her with the thought, how happy this eleven year old girl will make her husband. Eleven years old, I did not know her name, but 11 years after, for my MD graduation I formally met her for the second time giving services to a Church dispensary 8 hours a day absolutely as a charitable gesture. She gave me 43 year of happiness and after widowing at age 74 my life was taken over by a four letter word 2 years after her death.

I was always warned to avoid four letter words. What is more at age 78 my nephrologist opted, for my well being to submit to hormonal castration. So I did. The power of four letter words then illuminated my life.

In the second poem I had written her appeared the ending phrase, your pleasure is my ecstasy. Remarkably I discovered the powerfulness of this particular four letter word that governed, and governs my existence, now at age 81, I discover the true meaning of the power of LOVE."

In reading and analyzing these novels, I think all of us have tried to use our rational minds at times, at the expense of our imaginations, and irrational desires. I have personally scoffed at some of these women authors for propagating their idealist beliefs. For example, when Liz Gilbert attributed her nephew's sudden ability to sleep to her channeling her love for him into the Gurgita, I practically gagged.

What is our problem with true love or love's absolute power? We have come up with a million examples of why logically, it probably won't work out. The balancing act between work, children and life seems to exist only to tell women they probably will be unsatisfied ultimately. It is like we are teaching ourselves not to believe in love because it is such a long shot, because it only exists in movies. More than anything, Cesar's post re-instated my vanishing belief in true love and the power and wisdom that can only come with age.

His story is simple, and painful and beautiful. But if at age 81, widowed, he can find LOVE then God damn it, so can I. Times have changed, dynamics have changed, constructions of masculinity and femininity have changed but I don't think it is so foolish to believe that the power of love can live on.

Here's a compilation video. First there is a group of contestants singing "The Glamorous Life" by Fergie, very, very badly.

Next is 16-year-old Nathan Hite, who thinks he can throw Simon off his game. Instead, Simon throws him off his game by asking if he wants to listen, or if he wants to be a smartass. Yes, Simon actually used that word.

We also have Eva Miller, who claims to be in love with Simon. She slips and falls during her audition, and sings and dances very badly, so Simon thinks it's a joke audition. He makes her look into his eyes and tell him it's not a joke. He's actually very nice to her at the end, when he realizes she was being sincere, and gives her a hug.

Lastly, we have J.P. Tjelmeland, who gives one of the worst auditions ever. He is majoring in music, and says he is majoring in singing. At this rate, assuming someone needs to be able to sing in order to get a degree in singing, he'll be in college forever.

First up on this compilation we have Sarah Whitaker, a goth girl who used to be a professional wrestler. She actually seems demented.

We also have Kelly Clarkson-obsessed Chris Bernheisel, who comes bearing gifts, and can't sick a note. He actually starts to cry while talking to the judges, even before his audition, because he loves American Idol so much. He also does a handstand while singing "Since You Been Gone". He eventually is told he can work the red carpet at the American Idol finale for his local Fox affiliate, and that if they don't want to let him do it, they should contact Simon.

There is then a compilation of really bad singers doing "Stuck In The Middle With You", followed by a compilation of more bad singers who forgot the lyrics.

Here we get "complete torture" from Randy Stark and Crystal Ortiz, a couple who met on the American Idol discussion forum, where they give advice to people about auditioning. They met for the very first time in person by the trashcans at the audition site. No one should ever take their advice about auditioning, though, since their audition thoroughly sucked.

Aretha Codner (who was named after the Aretha) isn't a really bad singer, but she isn't a really good one either. She tried to sing Whitney Houston. Even after she is told that she is not a good singer, she insists she has an "amazing" and "beautiful" voice.

Joshua Boson tries to sing "I Am Telling You". He can't sing, and he is extremely confrontational. Simon eventually tells him that he is rude and deluded. Joshua believes the fact that he didn't make it through is proof that Idol is "fake and rigged". He also says that his talent is too big for American Idol, because he is going be the World Idol.

Last but not least, we have a compilation of really and truly bad singers doing "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood.

Now we have Shannon McGough, who does Janis Joplin, albeit badly. The judges say she has no melody, so she may be tone deaf.

Next up is Brandon Black, who makes a big weird entrance which was apparently meant to be funny. Then he sang "I'll Make Love To You" by Boys II Men, but he can't sing. He also seems to have offended Paula in the way he said he was going to sing it. After that, he sang a song he wrote for American Idol. Both Simon and Randy walked off the set when he started doing some weird routine involving his hat.

At that point we are shown a succession of bad auditions, including a woman who makes sounds previously unknown to man, and who puts her finger in her ear throughout. The judges crack that she does that to stop the pain.

Last, but certainly not least, Richard Valles shows us what it sounds like if you sing through your nose. He didn't do that on purpose, though. It's just the way he sings.

Here we have a compilation of "Since You Been Gone" by every bad singer imaginable.

Then, Gregory and Mia Tobias have the worst duet audition ever. I honestly suspect that they are both tone deaf.

Douglas Davidson says his dad will say to him, whenever he hears him singing, "I hate you." He apparently thinks his dad is jealous of how well he sings, and it never occurred to him that his dad means that he can't sing. Either way, even though Douglas is indeed a horrible singer, his dad is obviously an asshole. He sings Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer", if you can call that singing. He wanders around the room aimlessly, trying to warm up his voice, and keeps trying to sing even after they've told him no. Eventually he is escorted out by security. I think his dad has really, really screwed this guy up. I kind of feel sorry for him.

Finally, we have Tammy Tuzinski, who has a horrible voice, but thinks she sings like Celine Dion. She says she wants to sing "The Power Of Love" by Celine Dion .... but she didn't actually sing that, she was singing "If You Ask Me To" by Celine Dion.

That's it, folks. Next week we see what happens during Hollywood week, when they choose the final contestants. After that, I may or may not watch it. It really depends on who makes it into the final 12. Vote For the Worst says they have ringers this year, people who have already had recording contracts but are presented as if they just walked in off the street like everyone else. If that's true, I won't watch it, because I don't want to encourage that kind of dishonesty in a show which is supposed to find undiscovered talent.

I’m free!

Karen has no more hold over me. When you're in love with someone you give them tremendous power over you. My ex never wanted to give anyone that power. I gave her such power over me, but she abused it. Karen is not interested now, nor ever will be. Of course, I wouldn't have minded being abused by her. Ha ha, I'm such a dork.

THERE IS as these moments go by - an idea in me saying that soon I will inevitably crush upon a punishment for right now being as  satisfied as I am - on that cool fundamental level.
