PROGRAM EFA HOSTS SYNTOPIA 29 AUGUST 2008

09.00 AM SLT : Start real life show at Pastoe Design Center, Utrecht (can be watched in Second Life)

10.30 AM SLT: Start Second Life show, Virtual Holland (can be watched in Real Life)

11.00 AM SLT: Official graduation of Josine Vermeij in Utrecht

This Friday Josine and I will present our collection, both in real life and in Second Life. After the show there will be an exhibition until September 23rd. In real life the show takes place at 9.00 SLT/ 18.00 CET at Pastoe Design Centre, in Utrecht. In Second Life the models of Ewing Fashion Agency will showcase the virtual designs at 10.30 SLT/ 19.30 CET in Virtual Holland.

We hope to see you at one of the events, either in real life or in Second Life. By being at either one of the locations does not mean you have to miss out on the other (that wouldn’t suit my concept): on the day of the show there will be a live connection between the two worlds, so in Second Life you can watch the real life show and in real life you can also watch the Second Life show.

If you have any questions please contact Aideen Sideways.

Regards, Aideen & Josine

I was away two days ago. And I discovered I am so not a city girl. I'd die from sensory overload or maybe live but suffer psychosis similar to that some patients in the ICU get.

I went to Manila to file for my first ever nursing boards. PRC was like hell and the RP professionals were like little demons. It was very ugly.

However, I had my share of blessings. A big thanks to my rockstar cousin, Kuya [big brother] Nap, and our family friend, Kuya Jaypee. They were amazing. If you have any concern at all for me, you should also be thanking them because if not for them I'd probably be living inside the buildings of PRC for a week. They were not only my companions but they were also my nanny, checkers, and fixers, plus Kuya Nap was a great financer.

And oh, I'd also like to ask for your prayers because now I definitely, most desperately need to pass the coming nursing exams. For one, I am deeply motivated now to start my reviews because I certainly do not want ever to have a repeat appearance in the middle of the PRC unbelivable lines, and two my Kuya Nap and Kuya Jaypee already celebrated the results of my boards.

After we finished at the PRC, we went to MOA to have lunch, late afternoon. We settled at the Congo Grill and I ate lunch and they drank buckets and buckets of light beer. I thought it was because we were already celebrating Kuya Nap's approaching birthday, but he said we were celebrating ther esults of the boards - and the results were high mind you, so I desperately need your prayers okay? LOL.

Even when the thought of PRC was very sour in my mind, that day had its fun times too. These are some of the lines that probably made my day.

KUYA JAYPEE: Magpagawa kaya tayo ng diploma dito sa Recto? Kahit nursing lang ulit, sa magandang school. [Let's have a fake diploma in nursing made, one from a good school.]

ME: Dapat pang doctor na lang yung ipagawa natin. [Maybe we should have a fake medicine diploma made.]

KUYA NAP: Ayoko non. Gusto ko Diploma ng Master of The Universe. Pwede ba yun? [I don't want that. I want a Diploma in Master of The Universe. Is that possible?]

ME: [laughing] Sino naman pipirma ng Master of The Universe? [Who will sign the diploma in Master of The Universe?]

KUYA NAP: Ewan ko, gusto ko ng ganun. Sa tagal mo kasi sa pila namemorize na namin yung mga courses na available sa balckboard. Ang dami palang pwedeng imaster. Ako gusto ko Master of The Universe. [I don't know, but I want one. You were so long in that line we've memorized all the available courses posted on the blackboard. I never thought there were so many courses you can get a master's degree from. But I want a Master of The Universe title.]

KUYA JAYPEE: Meron palang course na Unknown! [I never knew there was such a course called Unknown!]

ME: Ano naman yun? [What's that?]

KUYA NAP: Yun siguro yung pang Master of The Universe. [Maybe that's the Master of The Universe course.]

ME: Wala namang ganun eh! [There's no such thing!]

KUYA NAP: Meron. Nakalagay nga dun eh. 00000 yung course code. [There is. 00000 is the course code.]

Tips on how to choose and make a successful business By Kuya Nap

1. It should fall on your line of interest.

2. You should have a vast and thourough knowledge of the ins and outs of it.

3. You should be passionate about it.

Based on these criteria, he figured out what business he wanted to start: a beer house.

I have many pictures with regards to the activities that happened this day but I am too lazy to find where my USB cable is so I still cannot transfer the pictures from my phone to the laptop. Maybe I can post them next time.

For now, this is the only picture I can post:

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="219" caption="This is my Kuya Nap"][/caption]

So maybe you have a good idea how much I hate his chicks.

"We would encourage everyone to examine their own individual risk and take steps to reduce it by adjusting their lifestyle"

Dr Mike Knapton
British Heart Foundation

Hear, hear! You may have missed this story on Sunday, but, in short, “Nottingham and Sheffield universities' analysis of almost 12,000 patients found men from the age of 48 and women from 57 would benefit from the drug” (the drug in this case is aspirin).

If you take supplements, then do watch your intake of vitamin E, often found in an antioxidant formulation, or sometimes in multivitamins. Vitamin E can thin the blood and taken with aspirin, there is a risk of the blood becoming too thin leading to potential bleeding. Rather than take supplements without advice or monitoring, I do recommend that before any supplementation programme is undertaken, an appropriate professional is consulted. Nutrition therapists are a good place to start as they are trained in the use of supplements, but do be wary of any that suggest you take a high level without proper justification. I have often heard of people taking dozens of supplements every day, having read or been advised that taking X reduces the risk of Y, or simply feeling that they may need more of a mineral. Just because vitamin and mineral supplements are considered ‘natural’, that they are always safe. Taking a nutrient in isolation can influence levels of other nutrients, and so should be taken in a measured way.

THE FIRST RUNG OF THE LADDER: ENTERING THE WORK FORCE AS A 20-SOMETHING

"Why, hello there. How are you today? I'm here to staple your documents, answer your phonecalls, and make photocopies. How Do You Take Your Coffee?"

One of the latest rites of passage in the life of this blogger has been entering the workforce. As a normal 20-something, it is only natural that I would graduate college and then proceed to get a crappy entry-level job wherein I fail to utilize any of the tools of my education.

So after a summer of tedious job applications, I was offered a job as a legal assistant at a law firm. My first two weeks have offered me the following insights and observations.

Being a lawyer is not an appealing job.

A lot of lawyers never do anything exciting like go to trials or perform depositions (I admit I have no idea what a deposition is). Instead, they sit around reading the fine print on documents and then explaining that fine print to their clients and making sure that there are no typos in the fine print that will cause them to get sued and have to make use of malpractice insurance. Several of the lawyers in my office are visibly unhappy with their work and yet they have to rationalize it and perform "happiness" because otherwise they would realize that their law school investment was an enormous waste.

Being a lawyer requires selling your soul/selling out.

The reason why lawyers are paid so well is because virtually their entire lives are devoted to their work. In law school, you are forced to study your brains out and then once you graduate you have to prepare paperwork and prepare depositions for hours upon hours on end. Also, being a lawyer requires you to be incredibly accurate and constantly deny yourself your human flaws... if something is messed up on your watch, then you are ultimately held responsible and finding someone to blame is a major part of daily life in a law firm.

What is the right job for a post-bachelor's degree 20-something? Especially one with a liberal arts degree?

I have determined that most job hunters in my age group resort to the following:

Primarily: Craigslist , Monster.com , Idealist.org
Secondarily: Go to "Career Counselor" Who Will essentially lead you to Primary approach
Finally: "Networking", ie asking if mommy and daddy have any friends that can help

Do these approaches offer results?

Is everyone reading fine print?... or doing the photocopying for the people reading fine print?

Is The Office the new Jungle ?

And more importantly, has anyone found the dream job?

When is the rat race over? Did I win?

LOL.

One of my co-workers looks like a muppet.

Hundreds of Swazi women have marched through the streets of the capital to protest about a shopping trip taken by nine of the king's 13 wives.

They chartered a plane last week to go to Europe and the Middle East.

The BBC's Thulani Mthethwa says the protesters handed in a petition to the finance ministry saying the money could have been better spent.

"We can't afford a shopping trip when a quarter of the nation lives on food aid," they chanted.

The march was organised by Positive Living, a non-governmental organization for women with Aids.

Our correspondent says there was a cross-section of women on the march from professionals to rural representatives.

"We need to keep that money for ARVs [anti-retrovirals]," was anther slogan shouted by the women.

King Mswati III, 40, has been criticized in the past for requesting public money to pay for new palaces, a personal jet and luxury cars.

News of his wives' trip broke in the local press a day after they left, our reporter says.

Earlier this week, senior princes warned the women not to march, saying it defied Swazi tradition.
