Rough Sleepers

The former project manager for the Rough Sleepers Initiative spoke at a Renfrewshire Branch meeting on Tuesday 19/8/08 about the lack of services for homeless people in Paisley.

He explained how The Rough Sleepers Initiative was to many vulnerable people in the town, a vital element in securing and maintaining their tenure and lamented it's decline into "nothing more than a signposting service."

SSP Renfrewshire supported the campaign to save the Rough Sleepers Initiative and we have campaigned heavily on related housing issues like Stock Transfer securing a narrow NO vote two years ago in the stock transfer ballot.

Although nominally a housing issue, tenure security is something that cannot be seperated from the wider issues of poverty and health. The people that ran the Rough Sleepers Initiative originally recognised this and that is why they provided GP cover, free meals, free clothing and links to intensive outreach work.

This was all taken away.

Now the homeless problem has become more visible, the local daily, the Paisley Daily Express has waded in, printing a story about the homeless and repeating unchallenged, anonymous calls to "clamp down" on the people who find themselves sleeping on the streets. (PDE 22/8/08)

Conectar PC Windows desde Mac OS X

Mucha gente suele preguntarme cómo podrían trabajar desde su Mac con otros PCs de la red a la que todos están conectados, en la que existen ordenadores con Mac OS X y Windows. Aunque hay multitud de soluciones para ésto, aquí os muestro las que me parecen más sencillas... Existen dos casos de uso:

CASO DE USO 1) Cuando queremos utilizar un PC desde nuestro Mac tal y como si estuviéramos sentados delante de él, manejando el sistema. Ésto lo podemos hacer de la siguiente forma:

Os descargáis el Remote Desktop Connection for Mac. Quizás os haga falta el StuffIt Expander (gratuito) para descomprimir el archivo, si no lo tenéis ya instalado.

Nos aseguramos que nuestro usuario en Windows tiene contraseña (de otro modo, el Remote Desktop no se conectará). Después entramos a Propiedades de Mi PC y buscamos la pestaña "Remoto". No hay que tocar mucho, simplemente, marcar la casilla donde pone "Permitir a los usuarios que se conecten de manera remota a este equipo":
Ya en el lado Mac, descomprimimos y ejecutamos el programa que nos hemos descargado y configuraremos la pestaña "General" con los datos del usuario Windows y su contraseña. En "Computer" tenéis que poner la IP del PC Windows al que queréis conectaros:

Sólo estos pasos son necesarios. Las demás pestañas tienen las propiedades de la configuración del Remote Desktop, donde podemos ajustar el tamaño de la pantalla remota, la profundidad de color, los recursos, el rendimiento dependiendo de la conexión... A gusto del consumidor. Evidentemente, cuanta mayor velocidad de transferencia (por ejemplo, en una red local), mejores parámetros le pondréis.

Y listo. Se abrirá una pantalla remota de Windows en la que se os volverá a pedir el usuario y la contraseña, y veréis vuestro escritorio tal y como lo tenéis en el PC, que podréis manejar de la forma habitual.
CASO DE USO 2) Lo que haremos será añadir carpetas compartidas o unidades en el escritorio de nuestro Mac, para utilizarlas como si fueran otras unidades más en nuestro ordenador. Antes deberemos tener alguna carpeta o unidad compartida en Windows, claro... No necesitaremos de ningún software extra, seguid estos sencillos pasos:
En el Finder, entrad en Ir / Conectarse al servidor... En la ventana que os aparezca, ponéis la IP del PC precedida por "smb://" que es el protocolo por el que nos comunicaremos con él, y le dais a Conectar:
Aparecerá una nueva ventana con la lista de carpetas o unidades compartidas en la máquina Windows, elegís cual queréis que se monte y pulsáis OK. Yo por ejemplo, he compartido el Escritorio de Windows, que es lo que estoy seleccionando:
¡Listo! Ya lo tenéis montado en el Mac. También aparecerá en cualquier ventana del Finder como una unidad más, de la que podréis traeros o llevaros cosas (si tenéis los permisos para hacerlo, claro):
Un último consejo: ¿Cómo hacer que la unidad se monte automáticamente cuando arrancamos el Mac? Pues nos vamos a Preferencias del Sistema / Cuentas / Arranque y arrastramos el icono de la unidad de red que acabamos de crear, en la ventana con la lista de ítems que se abrirán al iniciar sesión:

Recordad que en ésta lista podéis añadir cualquier aplicación también para que se ejecute nada más entrar en Mac OS X, por si os interesa...Eso es todo... espero que os puedan ser útiles estos pequeños consejos para "coexistir pacíficamente" con otros PC Windows de vuestra red, que podréis controlar y manejar sin moveros de vuestro Mac.

¿Como miro la IP de mi pc?

Teclea "cmd" en "Ejecutar". Cuando aparezca la ventana, tecleas "ipconfig" o "ipconfig /all". Ahí podrás ver la IP de todos los dispositivos de red que tengas en el PC.

Nota: Solo puede realizarce con Windows XP Professional SP2 o posteriores.

LBS Opportunity and infrastructure vendors...

I would like to share an article on LBS and infrastructure vendors :

Strong growth in location-based services represents an important opportunity for LBS platforms and infrastructure vendors. While until recently the LBS infrastructure market was mainly driven by the E911 emergency call requirements in the US, the expected global deployment of commercial LBS applications by carriers will grow LBS infrastructure licensing revenue from $111 million in 2008 to $2.2 billion in 2013.

"Several trends are driving the growth of LBS services and platform revenues," says ABI Research principal analyst Dominique Bonte. "Decreasing costs for the integration of GPS receivers in handsets, the increasing number of Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) server deployments by carriers investing in LBS infrastructure, the availability of A-GPS/SUPL-compatible handsets, and the commercialization of a growing number of LBS applications are all contributing to increasing sales of LBS-infrastructure systems such as Mobile Location Centers (MLCs), Position Determining Equipment (PDE) and Location Enabling Servers (LES)."

The LBS infrastructure market is currently dominated by Ericsson, Telecommunications Systems (TCS) and Nokia Siemens Networks with respective market shares of 31 percent, 24 percent and 18 percent. Smaller independent MLC vendors such as Redknee are also making inroads into the market.

Business models are reflected in a range of flexible payment options based on volume (per transaction or per LBS subscriber), flat fees, outright purchase, and even advertising-subsidized schemes with price levels dependent on the size of the carrier, the functionality, and the solution type (hosted or installed). Monthly per subscriber platform license fees typically amount to $0.71.

However, despite the expected growth in LBS services, a major threat is posed by the emergence of direct-to-consumer provisioning of remotely hosted third-party LBS applications which bypass the carrier network infrastructure, reducing carriers to the status of bandwidth providers and making LBS platforms obsolete. The challenge for platform vendors will be to focus on unique functionalities that can only be offered via carriers, such as spatial triggers, anonymous bulk location, control plane-based services, and LBS-enabled advertising as well as multi-access network solutions.

Another new member of our household, Vern (Veronique) a Lounging Lovely. She does have clothes but her undies are just so fabulous I can't bear to dress her. She would look smashing in Skipper's yellow bridesmaid dress.

Another new arrival, Birdie (Margaret Meets Ladybug) - she has the most fantastic stock outfit! So many gorgeous layers of yellow calico and red gingham with embroidered daisies. This dress matches the gingham of her headband perfectly. She is browsing Adam's shoe collection. He will have shoes available for sale soon!

Two of my favorite ladies, the Ebony twins Gudrun (L) and Glenda/Glenna. She goes by both names. They are of course not *really* twins since they have a triplet, Gwen, but she wouldn't sign the contract to be on their reality tv show and lives in the guest house out back. She is a very private person but often accompanies me in the car. That makes four Ebonies, and frankly I feel kind of bad when I see the "WTB: Ebony!" posts on the board. I do feel as though I have taken more than my share, but I adore them. I have gotten 3 off the board and one from eBay.

Here are some of Adam's dolls, left to right: Libby, Manon (AE), Signe (SME) and Buffy (SVB). The latter two have been customized. He also has Sandy (see previous post, she is the cousin to be PDE triplets) and a Heart of Monmartre doll which has not yet arrived.

I also recently acquired Cassandra Black and Spunky Punky petites as well as the long-coveted Birdsong Duet Emma and Melanie.

Progress on the house, but I need to add two more hanger bars to the cloest, and begin work on a *second* closet for shoes. I still don't know where the 6 dress form stands will go, displaying special outfits.

For now, my collection of Blythes is complete. I am always looking for a PAM but otherwise, I am pretty much all set. Phew!

A story of customization

Primadolly Ebony is my favorite Blythe. I cannot get enough of them, I started with one, fell immediately in love with Gudrun and then decided to get another so I could cut bangs on Gudrun and the other would remain stock (secretly, in case I screw up!) to be a twin to Gudrun. Glenda arrived and I (badly) cut bangs on Gudrun, and loved her even more. I loved her so much I wanted to customize her to make her truly mine. I ordered 3M sanding sponges, tons of eye chips and foils and model paints from Vallejo. Adam helped me take her apart and I began sanding her makeup off while he yanked out her eye chips.

I changed her chips to coolcat plain colors, dark bluesy greens and browns. I put plain silver foils behind so her eyes look vibrant and creamy. I then put her back together with her now nude face and new, intense eyes.

And I didn't know her anymore. Just like that, I wished her back to stock. It isn't that she looks at all bad like she is now, she is just no longer my Gudrun. I tried 7 times to paint lips on her, natural colors, brighter colors, full lips, thin lips... then wiped them off. She no longer works! I then.... ordered another Ebony and when she arrived, switched the dome/scalp that already had the fringe with a stock hair and gave the sanded Ebony with stock hair to Adam. This new girl? The new Ebony with Gudrun's fringe? She is sort of my Gudrun now. Almost. She's close.

I learned a LOT from this experience.

I am not going to try to improve on what my heart feels is perfection. In my mind, I believed that changing her would improve her, it just wasn't the reality. Tomorrow I will get a picture of the FormerGudrun.

La PDE recomana als partits que no porten pancartes pròpies a la manifestació de demà a Amposta

La Plataforma en Defensa de l'Ebre (PDE) ja ho té tot a punt per a la manifestació que demà recorrerà Amposta, per expressar al carrer quin és el rebuig del territori al transvasament urgent a Barcelona. «Les nostres previsions és que hi haurà molta gent, i som molt optimistes», va remarcar ahir un dels portaveus de la PDE, Joan Antoni Panisello. De fet, durant les últimes hores la PDE no ha deixat de rebre adhesions i mostres de suport importants, com la del sindicat Unió de Pagesos o la de la Federació d'Associacions de Veïns de Barcelona. El moviment social pretén que la manifestació d'Amposta siga un èxit per forçar el govern a retirar el projecte de la interconnexió de xarxes, però sobretot per reclamar un canvi d'actitud als polítics del territori.

El 19 de abril en Tortosa, la Asamblea de la Plataforma en Defensa de l´Ebre gritaba "Zapatero ambustero!". Es un calificativo que extendido al PSOE cada vez lo pronuncian más voces en Catalunya y en Aragón. Me hubiera gustado poner la canción "Aragón, agua y futuro" de La Ronda de Boltaña, que expresa perfectamente el sentimiento de los aragoneses contra los trasvases, pero no está en Youtube. En su lugar, "La trilla amarga", sobre un montaje de imágenes de Jánovas, otro ejemplo de infraestructura basada en la "vieja cultura del agua", como este trasvase de Zapatero, ante el que cada vez más entidades y ciudadan@s se oponen.

Demikian pula, dengan Ayah dari salah satu teman kerja kami, telah kedatangan tamu yang mengantar arwahnya kembali kepada sang Pemilik. Ba’da ashar kemarin telah menghembuskan nafas terakhir dan dimakamkan hari ini.

Exame avaliará alfabetização de alunos até 8 anos

Estados e municípios começarão a receber na próxima semana o material para realizar a Provinha Brasil, a primeira avaliação nacional para crianças em fase de alfabetização. Esse será o primeiro passo para verificar se as redes de ensino estão cumprindo uma das principais metas do Plano de Desenvolvimento da Educação (PDE): alfabetizar todos os seus alunos até os oito anos de idade.

Ao contrário das avaliações feitas até hoje, a Provinha já chegará às mãos dos secretários de Educação com uma escala de avaliação, com cinco níveis de aprendizado, estabelecidas a partir do número de acertos em cada prova. É a partir do nível quatro que o aluno está dentro do esperado. A expectativa dentro do Ministério da Educação (MEC), no entanto, é que a grande maioria esteja abaixo.

Dos estudantes de 4ª série do ensino fundamental, 71% não atingiram a pontuação indicada como ideal pelo ministério no Sistema de Avaliação da Educação Básica (Saeb), conforme mostrou reportagem do Estado ontem. Além disso, um terço deles não sabia nem sequer o que deveria ter aprendido ao fim do 1º ano. "Há escolas que certamente vão ultrapassar esse limite. Mas nossa expectativa é que os resultados não sejam muito bons", acredita o presidente do Instituto Nacional de Estatísticas e Pesquisa Educacionais (Inep), Reynaldo Fernandes.

A Provinha será usada pelas redes e os resultados não terão que ser, necessariamente, repassados ao MEC. "É um instrumento para escolas e redes fazerem o seu próprio diagnóstico, o que as crianças estão ou não aprendendo", afirma Reynaldo. Para fazer o seu controle, o MEC fará anualmente a sua própria avaliação, com uma amostra estatística controlada, que servirá para dizer como está cada Estado, região e o País.

Gagner de l'argent sur les transports

De plus en plus d'entreprises s'engagent à la suite des pouvoirs publics, dans des plans de déplacement d'entreprise (PDE).

Pour connaître le coût de chaque mode de transport, je vous invite à utiliser la calculette de l'ADEME

On y voit clairement que la voiture est le moyen de transport le plus coûteux. Ainsi, moi qui n'habite qu'à 4 km de mon travail, j'économise 500 euros par ans, sans compter le CO2, si je choisis les transports en commun plutôt que la voiture.

Mon employeur a de plus négocié un tarif préférentiel avec la société de transports en commun, et je peux payer mon abonnement annuel par prélèvement automatique mensuel.

Cerise sur le gâteau, depuis juillet 2007, mon employeur (qui est l'état) va me rembourser la moitié de mon abonnement, soit environ 170 euros. Cela correspond probablement au chèque transport. Du coup, mon abonnement de bus devient rentable par rapport aux carnets de tickets, même si je n'utilise les transports en commun qu'un jour sur deux, ce qui va bien sûr m'inciter à les utiliser davantage et à faire encore davantage d'économies.

Tout cela sans user mes souliers !

Bien sûr, pour pouvoir faire ce calcul, il faut être en banlieue et il faut avoir le choix. En plus me direz vous, les transports en commun prennent du temps et le temps c'est de l'argent ! Devoir attendre un bus ou une correspondance, c'est une perte de liberté !

Eh bien, ça se discute, car une perte volontaire de liberté... nous libère...

The end of the euphoria about the Educational PAC?

Unhappyly, right after the New Year, and the measures announced as palliative to the loss of more than the 40 billion os Reais of resources proceeding from the CPMF, the Minister of the Treasury, Guido Mantega, already announced that cuts in the budget of the PDE – Plan of Development of the Education will be inevitable in the appropriation budget of this year.

The proposals of PDE, although the lesser investment, are highly ambitious, being that, in what refers to basic and medium education, it is aimed to raise the Brazilian educational level, measured internationally, that currently reaches a ridiculous 3,8 (in a 0-10 scale) for 6,0 points, equivalents to the notes obtained nowadays by many developed countries.

An example of what it will be put in practice is the sending of urgent monetary resources for cities that present low learning indices. Although providential, this measure will must be very well fiscalized, therefore it can open breaches to corruption and financing administrative and educational incapacity.

Another measure, much argued, proceeding from the proposal of the former Minister of the Education, Cristovam Buarque, currently senator for the PDT, would be to raise the wage limit of all Brazilian public professors to 850 Reais = 483 dollars a month.

If in the State of São Paulo the great majority of professors receives more than this value, in almost the totality of States in Brazil professors gain values that arrive until the half, with the same work load.

About superior education, it is aimed to extend the vacant numbers of public universities students, mainly federal, through the increase of affirmative measures, that will future be argued in the near future in another post.

O fim da euforia do "PAC" da Educação? - The end of the euphoria about the Educational "PAC?

Infelizmente, logo após o ano novo, e as medidas anunciadas como paliativas à perda dos mais de 40 bilhões de reais de recursos provenientes da CPMF, o Ministro da Fazenda, Guido Mantega já anunciou que serão inevitáveis alguns cortes no orçamento do PDE – Plano de Desenvolvimento da Educação na proposta orçamentária deste ano.

As propostas do PDE, apesar do menor investimento, são altamente ambiciosas, sendo que, no que tange ao ensino fundamental e médio, visa-se elevar o conceito internacional de educação, que atualmente atinge os risíveis 3,8 (em uma escala de 0-10) para os 6,0 pontos, equivalentes às notas de muitos países desenvolvidos.

Um exemplo do que será posto em prática é o envio de recursos urgentes para municípios que apresentem baixos índices de aprendizagem. Apesar de providencial, esta medida deverá ser muito bem fiscalizada, pois pode abrir brechas corrupção e financiamento da incapacidade administrativa e educacional.

Outra medida, muito discutida, proveniente da proposta do ex Ministro da Educação, Cristovam Buarque, atualmente senador pelo PDT, seria de elevar o piso salarial dos professores da rede pública para os 850 reais por mês.

Se no Estado de São Paulo a grande maioria dos professores recebe mais do que este valor, na quase totalidade dos demais Estados os professores ganham valores que chegam até a metade, com a mesma carga horária.

Quanto ao ensino superior, visa-se ampliar os números de vagas das universidades públicas, principalmente federais, através do aumento de medidas afirmativas, que serão discutidas futuramente em um outro post.
