I usually do an annual reformat and reinstall to get things moving again, but that wasn't possible through traditional means this time; Her SuperDrive wasn't so super anymore. This was probably due to the computer being dropped from a short distance once. Anyway, I needed an alternate solution and imagined that it probably needed to be done from an external drive. From the research I'd done on the web, I couldn't find a solution that didn't involve using a freshly formatted drive with a partition dedicated to acting as an OS X install DVD. With some experimenting, I found it was easy with an existing external drive I was using as a projects drive. It was valuable that I not lose the data on this drive, so I used this solution:

  1. Make sure your external hard drive is connected.
  2. Make a copy of your Mac OS X Leopard disk. In Disk Utility, highlight the Mac OS X Install DVD, and from the menu bar, choose File: New: Disk image from...(choose the DVD), and then save it to the Desktop. Wait until the process is complete.
  3. In Disk Utility, click on the Restore tab.
  4. For "Source", click on Image..., choose the DVD image you just created from the Desktop.
  5. For "Destination", drag your external drive from the left pane into the blank "Destination" field.
  6. Make sure the "Erase Destination" box is NOT CHECKED, unless you want to wipe out all of your data.
  7. Click on the "Restore" button. Wait until the process is complete.

Now your external drive is ready to use as a boot and install disk! Just choose it as the startup disk from the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences. Restart...you're on your way.

]]> <![CDATA[wifi on Dell Inspiron 1318]]> http://liaww.wordpress.com/?p=27 Sun, 12 Oct 2008 18:26:00 +0000 aliencoder http://liaww.ca.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/wifi-on-dell-inspiron-1318/ Finally, I was able to get the wifi to work on my Inspiron 1318.  The trick was that the lspci for some reason showed me the wrong broadcom version.  It was showing 4312 while it really is bcm4310.  The difference is the fact that I need different drivers to make it work with ndiswrapper.  it works fine with b43fwcutter and bcmwl5 as the driver.  If you follow the instructions and install the driver found in Vista as in my case it won't work.  It will try to install the bcmwl6.inf that is what is installed under vista.  I installed the bcmwl5 and it works fine.  Actually I am writing this over my wif link.. finally.

If you need help geting your wifi on the Dell Inspiron 1318 to work under Open SuSe let me know, and I will post links to the sites that I got my information from..

Though I am fairly comfortable working on Unix environments, this is my first experience with a Linux desktop. The Ubuntu community seems very active, so finding workarounds for issues has been trivial. My main reactions to a primarily smooth first week, in no particular order:

  • The OS install took 15 minutes. 15 minutes!!! That was shock enough for someone used to Windows installs taking ten times that amount.
  • Shutting down and rebooting the system are very quick processes in comparison, taking almost as long as it took to hibernate on Windows!
  • On the other hand, my one attempt at hibernating on Linux didn't turn out so well.
  • Having OpenOffice installed as part of the OS install is a nice, unexpected bonus.
  • The wireless adapter has already started getting on my nerves. First off, I had to actually type in my router name by hand, and not have to select from a list. Secondly, and this is the really annoying bit, the wireless adapter loses connectivity with the wireless router periodically. When this occurs, I have to type out the router and password details for it to connect - why can't this information be saved? And sometimes, even this doesn't work and I actually have to reboot!
  • Being able to run commands like 'find' on the native OS gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.
  • The ability to be redside on the internet while having my Windows virtual vpn'ed into the corporate network is a HUGE plus.
  • The virtual does run quite slowly at times - though I doubt that has anything to do with the host.

On the whole, am looking forward to learning cool tips and tricks to get much more out of my Ubuntu experience!

There are the little things that bother me when I'm using a computer and doing something specific, and to solve these problems I have this idea where my applications or most likely operating system looks at what I'm doing and adjusts the settings of all other applications to suit my desired set-up. In a nutshell think of it as desktops or OS-X spaces that go beyond just showing and hiding certain windows or applications.

Some examples of what I would like it to do

Situation 1.

I am working in my graphics applications and based on the fact that I have Photoshop, TextMate and maybe Dreamweaver open.

So the computer should do the following.

* Mute my new email notification sound.
* Mark me as busy in any IM client I have open.
* Fire up my 'working' playlist in iTunes but lower the volume.
* Check that I have the right screen settings and chosen calibration file in the OS settings for correct display and also change the desktop background to a nice neutral gray so my eyes are not tricked on color evaluation.

Situation 2.

I have Logic Studio open and have incoming audio from my Firewire 410 interface, so clearly I have an instrument plugged in and might be recording or jamming.

So the computer should do the following.

* Mute all system sounds and notifications other than those generated by Logic or my audio interface application.
* Hide all applications except Logic and my audio interface
* Reconfigure my audio settings so everything is set out thru my Firewire 410 and disable any other applications that might be changing the sound (I use Hear and/or SRS iWOW) so I am only hearing the raw Logic audio thru my studio speakers.
* Mark me as busy on any IM client and close any applications that I have listed for this particular context, for example I don't need my email client open and Logic will appreciate the extra memory it might free up.

Now I am sure we are a way from this kind of computing and operating system, but it sure would be nice if someone could solve the problem. My programming skills are not up to it, but who knows maybe one day I'll figure it out.

WARNING: This will COMPLETELY remove WIndows XP from your EEE

Requirements:

-A usb drive or SD card that is AT LEAST 2gb large, it will use the entire disk space

Procedure:

1. Download this torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4345648/Asus_eee_pc_1000_Xandros_Restore_Disk

2. Unzip the boot.rar file

3. Mount the Asus1000.iso with a tool like Daemon Tools

4. Plug in your USB drive or SD card

5. Run AsusSetup.exe and follow its prompts

6. Plug in the USB drive into your EEE and turn on the computer, press F2 to enter the BIOS

7. Press the right arrow key to the Boot Tab

8. Go to "Hard DIsk Drives" and make your USB drive or SD card the "1st Drive"

9. Go to "Boot Device Priority" and make sure that the 1st boot device is your drive

10. Save and Exit the BIOS and the installer takes care of the rest!

Now you will have Xandros fully installed on your EEE.

This is a run through and review of what happened on my upgrade and my opinion on the OS.

Installation

I backed up my drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, this is much better than SuperDuper and a little bit faster. It automatically sets the copy to be bootable which is very good. This took about 2 hours in all.

With my back up at the ready in case of a backfire during installation, I popped in the OS X Leopard Installation DvD. It came up with a friendly window like many app installer windows. I opened the OS X Installer straightaway and filled out the install form. I restarted my Macbook and on log in it began to install, I was able to skip the DvD verification as the disc has been used successfully on another Mac running Tiger. The installation took about  2 hours to complete. Then I restarted again and it was done.

I had a few updates installed via the Software Update and I am now running on an up to date MacBook

My opinion of Leopard

Leopard is a great OS, it has loads of new features.

Stacks enables the user to click on a folder icon or stack icon on the Dock ,files spew forth from the icon in a beautiful fan like motion. I use this to house my Graphics and Downloads and it works great.

Now Coverflow is featured in Finder to make it easier for the user to access files, images and videos in Finder ,It's great, I find it easier and more stylish to browse my files and videos now. 

Photobooth has a few more effects, Greenscreen or Bluescreen allows the user to import him or herself into a rollercoaster, space, a polka-dot background and many more. It also enables the user to take 4 photos in quick succesionof each other. I find the effetcs good, but they only work nicely with a greenscreen or bluescreen.

How can I forget the Dock? It's great, the icons on the Dock have their own dynamic reflections and the active application indicator is a nice glowing rectangle. The menu bar is now transparent and lets 50% of the wallpaper through without losing text and icon visibility, depending on the wallpaper you have, I am using Aurora, it's really nice and it's the iconic Leopard wallpaper.

 

Overall, Leopard is a great, amazing OS and I personally love it.

Jika belum pernah mendengar, maka silahkan dengarkan ocehan saya berikut ini. Tapi bagi anda yang sudah familiar dengan Linux saya sarankan tidak usah mendengar ocehan saya ini, karena anda akan bosan dan ketiduran di depan computer (sumpah, saya tidak bohong).

Sejarah (singkat)
Linux adalah salah satu dari sekian banyak sistem operasi di dunia ini. Apa sistem operasi itu ? Hmm… agak susah menjelaskannya. Begini saja, apakah anda pengguna MS. Windows ? Baik itu Windows 9x (95,98,98 SE), Windows XP, maupun Windows Vista ? Nah, Windows itulah yang disebut sistem operasi. Dulu, saat saya mulai belajar tentang komputer di SD (meskipun kebanyakan cuma teori), saya kira hanya ada satu OS  Operating System – bahasa inggris dari sistem operasi --) di dunia ini, yaitu MS. Windows. Tapi ketika saya SMA kelas 1, saya baru tahu bahwa OS itu tidak cuma satu. Saya tahu ternyata banyak sekali OS di dunia ini. Salah satunya adalah Linux.

Linux diciptakan oleh seorang mahasiswa Finlandia bernama Linus Benedict Torvald atau yang biasa dipanggil Linus Torvald. Pada masa itu, ada OS yang menarik minat Linus Torvald, yaitu UNIX.
Sayang, harga UNIX ini sangat mahal, dan source code-nya tidak tersedia bebas. Linus Torvald pada waktu itu masih menggunakan Minix.

Minix sendiri diciptakan oleh Prof. Andrew Tanenbaum yang sistemnya merupakan tiruan sederhana dari UNIX tapi digunakan untuk tujuan pendidikan. Karena digunakan untuk pendidikan, maka Prof. Tanenbaum seringkali menolak permintaan untuk menambah fitur pada MINIX. Source code MINIX dapat diperoleh pada disket dan buku yang ddapat dibeli, tapi hak pengandaannya dikendalikan oleh penerbitnya.

Terinspirasi dengan MINIX, Linus pun mencoba membuat OS sendiri, tapi tidak memiliki keterbatasan dalam fitur dan penggandaannya. Selesai mengerjakan proyeknya, Linus pun kemudian memberi nama Freax (gabungan dari kata free, freak, dan X –dari UNIX--). Lho katanya Linux, tapi ini kok Freax ? Sabar dulu, ini kan baru awalnya...

Sebenarnya, Linus Torvald sudah memikirkan nama Linux. Tapi karena meras egois bila menggunakan nama itu, akhirnya Linus Torvald memutuskan menggunakan nama Freax. Linus pun menyimpan hasil kerjanya sebagai Freax di FTP server universitas selama kurang lebih setengah tahun. Seorang teman Linus, yang bernama Ari Lemmke tidak setuju dengan nama Freax, ia lebih menyukai nama Linux. Akhirnya tanpa sepengetahuan Linus, Ari Lemmke mengubah nama Freax menjadi Linux. Pada akhirnya, Linus pun mengakui kalau nama Linux lebih baik daripada Freax, dan seterusnya ia menggunakan nama Linux.

Setelah mengerjakan hasil kerjanya, Linus pun mengirim email ke grup usenet comp.os.minix . Email yang dikirim dengan nada merendah ini ternyata mendapat sambutan yang luar biasa dari para programmer di dunia, bahkan Linus sendiri tak pernah memikirkan hal ini. Programmer-programmer hebat saling kerjasama mengembangkan sistem kernel Linux menjadi system operasi yang siap digunakan.

Distro
Jika saya katakan “distro” ? apakah yang ada dalam pikiran anda ? pasti rata-rata anda mengatakan toko pakaian, butik dan semacamnya. Tapi dalam Linux, distro yang dimaksud bukanlah toko pakaian seperti yang anda bayangkan. Distro adalah pemendekan dari distribution. Istilah distribution ini digunakan dalam dunia Linux, karena banyaknya jenis Linux di dunia ini. Lho katanya Linux itu diciptakan oleh Linus Torvald, kok sekarang ada banyak jenis Linus ? apa Linus Torvald membuat banyak jenis ? Tidak ! Linus Torvald hanya membuat kernel (jantung) dari sistem operasi.

Tapi karena sifat Linux yang Open Source ini, maka banyak orang maupun perusahaan membuat distribusi Linux yang bervariasi. Distribusi Linux adalah paket kernel (yang hanya dibuat oleh Linus Torvald dan beberapa orang yang dipercaya) beserta aplikasi pendukung lainnya seperti desktop manager, aplikasi office, dlsb. Kendali untuk memasukkan kode kernel Linux hanya ada di tangan Linus Torvald. Hanya dia yang memutuskan apakah source code ini atau source code itu layak masuk ke kernel Linux. Hal ini juga berlaku sama dengan kode patch (perbaikan) yang dikirimkan pihak luar untuk para developer kernel. Hal ini dilakukan agar kernel Linux tidak berpotensi banyak bug (error atau cacat dalam kode), dan ukurannya makin membesar.

Kembali lagi ke bahasan kita, distro. Berikut ini contoh-contoh distro besar (dinamakan distro besar karena termasuk distro yang dikenal masayarakat umum dan bersifat umum pula) yang pernah saya temukan di internet dan di dunia nyata :

Mandriva
Ini adalah distro Linux yang pertama kali saya coba (waktu itu saya menggunakan Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition). Ketika baru menginstall distro ini,  rasanya berbeda sekali  dengan WinXP yang saya gunakan.

Fedora
Distro satu ini adalah distro turunan Red Hat yang dikembangkan oleh komunitas Fedora Project. Didukung secara finansial oleh Red Hat Inc. Tapi Red Hat Inc, tidak memberikan dukungan layanan resmi kepada anda. Sebagai gantinya, anda dapat bertanya pada komunitas yang ada. Jika anda ingin serius mempelajari Fedora, saya sarankan anda membaca buku "Zero to Hero : Fedora 8" karangan "mmta & Sto" terbitan Jasakom (http://www.jasakom.com). Buku itu merupakan penyempurnaan dari buku sebelumnya "Fedora Core 4 : Red Hat Linux" yang pernah ditulis "Sto" dari Jasakom juga. Buku ini (Zero to Hero : Fedora 8) akan menuntun anda untuk belajar linux dengan jalan yang benar. Meski saat artikel ini ditulis, Fedora sudah mencapai versi 9, tapi saya rasa ilmu dalam buku tersebut masih berlaku. Buku tersebut juga memberikan bonus DVD Fedora 8 ! Jadi tidak perlu khawatir tidak bisa mempelajari Fedora 8.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
Perusahaan Red Hat sendiri setelah mengehentikan pengembangan distro Red Hat, memulai menmbuat RHEL. RHEL ini tidak gratis ! Anda harus membayar sejumlah uang kepada perusahaan Red Hat. Uang ini digunakan untuk membayar jasa para support yang siap membantu anda. Ya ! yang dijual disini bukanlah OS RHEL, tapi jasa dari para penyedia support (dukungan ) di perusahaan Red Hat. Perusahaan ini pernah memberikan saham $20 juta untuk Linus Torvald secara gratis. (Anda tidak salah baca! Ye, memang  $20 JUTA SECARA GRATIS).

Slackware
Distro ini dikhususkan untuk orang-orang yang ingin mendalami Linux. Kata orang-orang distro ini cukup sulit, tapi menurut saya, distro ini cukup sederhana. Distro ini termasuk salah satu distro tertua yang masih bertahan hingga kini.

Debian
Debian merupakan salah satu distro tertua, sama seperti Slackware. Jujur, saya tidak pernah mencobanya. Distro ini juga digunakan sebagai basis distro Ubuntu.

Ubuntu
Turunan Debian yang satu ini sangat popular sekarang ini. Paket instalasi Ubuntu kompatibel dengan debian, karena sama-sama menggunakan ekstensi *.deb. Tapi beberapa orang mengatakan Ubuntu tidak 100% kompatibel (cocok) dengan Debian. Para pengembang Ubuntu berusaha membuat Ubuntu sebagai Linux yang semudah mungkin untuk digunakan. Mungkin hal ini dilakukan untuk menggeser OS Windows,
dan agar para pengguna OS Windows mau beralih mau berlatih menggunakan Linux.

BackTrack
Distro khusus untuk para pengguna yang yang berkutat di bidang IT Security, dan kadang-kadang digunakan pula oleh para hacker. Distro ini berisi ratusan tool untuk IT Security, yang juga bisa digunakan untuk kegiatan hacking dan cracking (wah, menarik sekali bagi yang berjiwa hacking dan cracking). Jasakom juga pernah menulis panduan (buku mini) tentang penggunaan BackTrack, judulnya "BackTrack : Panduan untuk PEMULA" yang ditulis oleh "Sto". Dalam buku itu berisi CD BackTrack 2.0. Tapi saat artikel ini ditulis, BackTrack sudah mencapai versi 3.0. Tapi tenang saja, ilmu dalam buku itu masih bisa bisa digunakan kok.

OK, itu tadi beberapa distro yang pernah saya temui dan beberapa diantaranya pernah saya coba.

Linux tidak hanya sebuah distro, yang hanya digunakan untuk keperluan belajar, kantor atau rumahan.
Linux juga banyak digunakan untuk berbagai keperluan. Misalnya, Linux ditanamkan dalam handphone sebagai sistem operasi handphone. Linux digunakan untuk membuat film animasi 3d berteknologi canggih. Linux ditanamkan dalam mesin game konsol (XBOX, atau PS2). Sejak diciptakan Linux, dunia teknologi berubah. Tidak lagi bergantung pada satu vendor, ataupun ketergantungan pada produk tertentu. Masyarakat bisa memilih. Mana yang terbaik atau mana yang mereka sukai. Semua itu tidak lepas dari peranan seorang Linus Benedict Torvalds yang telah menciptakan Linux.

Memang, kalo kita membicarakan perseteruan antara Windows dan Linux tidak bakalan ada habisnya. Kenapa? Banyak sekali alasannya.

Sebetulnya awal mula dari perseteruan ini, mungkin adalah sebuah persaingan memperebutkan pangsa pasar dimana yang satu bersifat opensource yang satu bersifat commercial. Tidak dapat kita pungkiri bahwa persaingan antara 2 Operating System ini adalah yang paling panas sekarang ini (walaupun seperti dalam film Pirates of The Sillicon Valley, Microsoft panas dengan Mac OS).

Terdapat beberapa versi yang membela dan menyebutkan kelemahan dari operating system yang lain. Sebagai contoh :

Pamięć DT150 jest kompatybilny z systemami operacyjnymi Windows Vista/XP/2000, Mac OS X 10.3 (i nowsze) oraz Linux 2.6 (i wyższe).
