This is rather on the heavy side concerning Photoshop, but I wanted to go for a retro look here and used some filters and masks and color correction to get rid of some distracting colors in the background. It all comes down to the right presentation for this beautiful woman, standing in a narrow street in a suburb of Tokyo. I wanted her to glow golden and mysteriously...

New 12.3 megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor Developed to provide the highest level of DX-format photographic performance and assuring response needed for virtually any shooting conditions, the new 12.3 effective megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor for the D300 also delivers compact Nikon
DX-format system size and technology advantages. It's integrated analog-to-digital converter offers the ability to select between high quality 12-bit or 14-bit conversion, and its design encompasses a
broad light sensitivity range of ISO 200 to 3200, (plus Lo 1, IS0 100 equivalent and Hi 1, IS0 6400 equivalent). High-speed output enables rapid continuous shooting and realizes the new Live View shooting
modes. The Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) not only helps prevent moiré, color fringing and shifting, but also functions as part of Nikon's first Self-cleaning Sensor Unit built into the D300.

All in all i think its a KICKASS SLR both for Novice & Professional users alike.

The beauty of photographing people, especially newborns is being able to capture an insight into what their personalities will become, even at 2 weeks. Every photo shoot is different even though sometimes i ask myself - how many different ways can you photograph a baby? But every time, it always surprises and delights me to be able to create an individual story that is unique to every child, to every person.

I get asked often whether i only take photos of babies? No, i take photos of people of all ages and occasions through life. So if there is someone in your family, network or community- a child, partner, parents, friends, or even a special event requiring images, please consider me to tell your story.

This evening I went to shoot a pair of volleyball games with my fine Nikon D40x. I have found that, when shooting volleyball, the best deal is simply to plop yourself near the middle, and shoot on both sides of the net. I've also found that setting the white balance manaully really makes an exposure better, at ISO 6400 equivalent at least.

All right, the game. With volleyball I always shoot until one team gets 25, then I split. I followed that procedure tonight, though I wish I hadn't. You see, on the return from the volleyball game my attention drifted, and I drifted into the middle of the bike lane. My light was off of my bike; I'd forgotten to put the thing back on after I'd last taken it off. Ironically, I was actually thinking about how riding along the bike path at night would be a good situation for having that bike light on...then I hit someone. He was in the middle too, he had a light. If I'd been paying a modicum of attention, the accident wouldn't have happened. If I'd had my light attached (if I'd remembered to put the damned thing back on my bike that is) it wouldn't have happened. The fact is though, that we saw each other at the last second, and we swerved. I landed on my camera. He landed on his backpack. I dislocated his shoulder with my right eye. He is a very christian person, he asked me to pray for him. I did, and then I did something practical, I rode home. I got the truck (though my dad) and got back down to the bike path. We gave the man I ride to the E.R. Dear God I hope he has insurance. I say "insurance" as opposed to "will be okay," since I know that he'll be fine. Good fun night. Oh, and my camera is fine.

This past weekend was incredible. My wife and I, along with our very good friends, Joel and Shannon, and their daughter Carter took off for a relaxing weekend in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

This was really a reason to get away and celebrate my birthday with some truly great friends. My wife surprised me Friday afternoon with my birthday present, a brand new Nikon D90 DSLR camera! How awesome is that? I couldn't wait to get it out of the box and start firing off some shots. Below you will see some of my favorite pics from the weekend.

So now let me introduce you to the crew. This bundle of joy is Carter. If you could figure out a way to convert the energy that she has into a viable source for the country we would solve the energy crisis!!

My long time friends Joel and Shannon.

My wonderful wife, Tori.

And last but not least, Me.

So that is the cast for the weekend. Lucky for you that is probably the last time you will have to look at my mug.

Saturday was a fun day in Waynesville. what could be better than the smell of kettle corn, sausages and fried (insert whatever you like here) in the air. Ahh, a fall festival on Main street.

i want to get my face painted....with a candy corn?

I guess getting that candy corn wore her out

Manny and Jonathon of the Limbo Bratz. I used a super old speedlight, but it works just fine. It's not the tools that you have but how you use them. This image was processed in Lightroom 2. Shot with Nikon D70 and 18-35mm f/3.5. I borrow the lens from school. The only lens I actually own is a Nikon E-Series 35mm f/2 manual focus lens. If you have good eye sight, I'd recommend cheap lenses like the E-Series. At first the lens worked out fine, but then my eye sight went to hell and I started discovering out of focus images every time I got to the computer. This is a real bummer. The other thing about older Nikon manual focus lenses is; you can only shoot in manual mode and you have no in-camera meter. So you "shoot in the dark," as my asian professor says. But with digital it's not that big of a deal, you still have that handy tool called the histogram.

It's week number 5. Midterms. Actually, I don't have to take any. I guess I'm just lucky. I guess I'm also lucky that I've gotten A's on every assignment I've turned in so far. Maybe it isn't luck.

School is going great. I've met a ton of awesome people and have learned a lot. Especially from one of my roommates. At 18, he's already an extremely accomplished photographer. I used to say he was lucky cuz he had lots of cool equipment. Today he got a call from Nikon offering him $600 for a single image. Luck? I don't think so.

My Rebel is about to crap out. I have been shooting with that thing for 3 years. It was good training wheels, but I think I am ready for a two-wheeler. I've had my eye on the 5D Mark II since before it was even released. It looks like an amazing piece of equipment - or so I've read. It better be, for the price of $2,800. I need one. I've made a pact with myself: no spending (except for the essentials, of course) until the 5D2 is in my hands. If I have the camera by January I'll be lucky.

But I'll quit rambling. In a nutshell, SCAD is amazing. If you ever even think you might be interested, check it out.

Coming here was the best decision I ever made. I guess I got lucky.

Frames might not be to everyone's taste. I like them as I think they can add a lot to a photograph. While playing with Lightroom 2.1RC1 I have found a way to put a simple frame around a photo using Lightroom's Post-Crop Vignette. There are four sliders you can play with. To achieve the effect you see in this photograph just set them as follows -

Amount to -100

Midpoint to 0

Roundness to -100

Feather to 50

I realize this is an abuse of the original intent behind Post_Crop Vignette but if this functionality lets me create quick frames before exporting photos to Flickr™ or Zenfolio I'd rather call it re-purposing instead of misuse.

I have owned every coolpix from the 900 to this one. Every time they come out with a new model, I sell the old, and buy the new. There are always some new feature I'd like to have, items on my wish list that have been answered. (Some of my best shots were taken with the 900 1MP model.) I certainly miss the smaller twist models (last:4500).

The good: I'm comparing mostly with the more recent coolpix models, not similar cameras from other manufacturers. I could go into why I've stuck with Nikon, but that's another story. Nikon has wisely taken their most often used controls away from an inconvient buried menu and put in on a dial right net to the shutter release. The have threaded the front lens mount for easier use of lens add-ons. (the 5700 and 8700 require slide on adaptors). the Vibration Reduction was a big upgrading feature for me. Past owned coolpixes: you're taking a shot of people outdoors in shade. The coolpix wants to use the flash. You disable the flash and find that your resultant shots are blurry. Agggrhhh!!! The VR helps in this respect. I've pushed the use of this feature, and its certainly not a miracle worker, but an improvement. The 10X zoom lens is a real winner- keeps away the temptation to use an add-on tele conversion lens. The short movie feature is better in quality than past cameras and very handy. There is a new battery model- needed for the more power hungry 8800. If your coming from a smaller MP camera, the 8MP's value is in allowing you to crop in software and still get a sharp print. Also for making very large enlargments. For regular snapshots and email/web photos it is gross overkill. There is a remote control which is nice for taking slow shutter speed shots and the times when the photographer wants to get in the picture without having to run like the devil before the self timer releases. For those not familiar with the coolpix line, the build is excellent, the camera is comfortable, the close ups breathtaking, the photos are very sharp, the features are numerous. The monitor swivel is very handy- i'd say indespensible. This is a choice if you want the top without getting into interchangable lenses and the expense and inconvenience of same.

The bad: The 8800 is a tad larger than the 8700, but just enough to make it feel bulky. The 8700 felt perfect. The shutter delay is still annoying. The low light functionality is still inferior. The manual mode is still relatively useless. (It would be great to be able to focus and zoom the lens by turning the lens barrel like you could in prehistoric times. The monitor is a tad small for a camera of this size. And the auto exposure has a tendancy for too much, forcing you to manually under compensate (easy to do, but annoying to have to do) in many lighting conditions.

Necessary add-ons: Nikon makes a great $25(?) leather case. An additional battery (the after market ones for other Coolpix cameras were good enough, but not available yet for the 8800). A filter lens cover (so you are cleaning that and not the lens). And a Birt Sirkin CheatSheet. And you might consider buying (eventually) one of those real small (e.g. Casio) cameras as a pocket model when your photo needs are light.

General complaint about digital cameras: Low light sensitivity. What's this 'noise' BS. This is (almost) 2005. We should be shooting at ISO 1200 with no noise.

CameraLab’s has done a great 10minute Nikon D700 SLR Review video and posted it up on YouTube for us all to enjoy. The Nikon D700 Digital Camera is situated as Gordon Laing states at the beginning of his D 700 review video between the semi-professional D300 slr series and the flagship D3 series DSLRs, making it a great choice for a very large segment of the market with its wide range and great value.

The video isn’t a pure technical review going into all the super techy jargon that will confuse the average person, and does a great job of giving the average person an overview and lesson on what the D700 does well, whom it suits, and its strengths and weaknesses. He gives a great technical comparisons of some of the new and old features against the previous models, and shows off what makes the D700 Camera unique and similar to what is already out there.

Enjoy the Nikon D700 review video above as Gordan Lang takes you on a comprehensive visual tour of this new and news making digital slr camera from Nikon.
