So what does this mean to him and to us. Does this mean that Rafael Nadal the asteroid will be remembered for more time than Rafael Nadal the tennis player.  Who is more important the guy who worked hard for making 'Rafael Nadal' a brand or the asteroid who earned it because it was discovered at the same time the player made a record after 1980 (winning 4th French Open and both French Open and the Wimbledon in the same year). The only point where the asteroid scores is it will outlive the player for a much longer time span.

This follows Roger Federer's name being given to a star. The main question is how much does this affect the interest of the common man or the fact that people remember it like the Sun or the Moon or even Jupiter or the recently controversial Pluto.  People will usually forget the name except for the time it amuses them.

Does this serve like a steroid for the names of famous people?  Perhaps the  people who name such cosmic bodies with famous people think that they solve their problem for naming a newly discovered body.

But the fact remains that mankind will always remember the man more than the machine or the asteroid in this case.

So what's bin happening in the world in the meantime? I mourned Federer's loss to Nadal at Wimbledon...Maybe it's me, but I would have preferred that, Federer beat Borg's record this year and Nadal could have the title next year, exchanging for the French with Federer.... Be that as it may...A truly EPIC final!! If Nadal had to take away the crown from the champion, it had to be done that way...The roller-coaster ride of a match had my imaginary balls in my mouth...and my heart skipped a beat more often than a drum and bass track...

Meanwhile, in India, Arushi's killers have been identified, the Talwar couple must take stock of all they've been through, and the nuclear deal is making an atomic impact on the current government...

For me, I'm on a self-awareness trip. [ So, not quite that lazy :P] I mean, I was wondering the other day about the question 'Who Am I?' ...I'll share that in another post....

La Federación de Vela de la Región de Murcia celebra el próximo viernes 18 de julio su Gala de la Vela, que se desarrollará en el centro de celebraciones y eventos ‘El Lago de La Torre’, de Polaris World, ubicado en La Torre Golf Resort a partir de las 20:30 horas, un entorno perfecto que combina la profesional atención que un evento de estas características requiere con la cercanía a la naturaleza, el entorno natural de nuestro deporte.

De nuevo este GP se ha visto marcado por la lluvia, que a su antojo ha decidido que la carrera de 125 cc se disputara en condiciones secas y la de 250 cc en mojado. Para los pilotos del octavo de litro las 27 vueltas han sido pura incertidumbre. Finalmente, aunque en las últimas vueltas estaba lloviendo la dirección decidía no suspenderla, llegando hasta el final con neumáticos slicks.

Bradley Smith representante del Team Polaris World, se colocaba en puestos de cabeza desde el inicio llegando a liderar la prueba. Hasta la última curva Smith intentaba recuperar las posiciones pérdidas en una dura batalla por terminar en puestos de podio, aunque finalmente el joven ingles, cruzaba la línea de meta en una cuarta posición que lo coloca séptimo en la clasificación general con 79 puntos y a 87 del primer clasificado.

En la categoría de 250cc Mattia Pasini realizaba una fantástica salida que lo remontaba hasta la quinta posición. Pasini que ha vuelto a encontrar el ritmo con su moto se mantenía en el primer grupo hasta finalizar sexto. Para el italiano que no había tenido un buen fin de semana este resultado es esperanzador y le proporciona la fuerza necesaria para volver a ocupar los puestos de podio. Mattia pasa a ocupar la sexta posición en la clasificación general con 108 puntos y a 56 puntos del primero.

# 38 Bradley Smith - 4º - “ Al principio estaba esperando para ver que sucedía, no estaba seguro de las condiciones de la pista y he preferido ir con prudencia. Mis neumáticos al inicio no han respondido bien por lo que he esperado a que alcanzaran la temperatura idónea. He visto que podía ponerme primero y así ha sido, entonces a comenzado a llover y me he puesto un poco nervioso, el grupo que me perseguía me ha pasado y aunque tenía un buen ritmo y he intentado hasta la última curva pasar para conseguir podio, no ha podido ser. Estoy contento con la cuarta posición, hubiera sido genial conseguir una victoria antes de las vacaciones pero así esta también muy bien”.

# 75 Mattia Pasini - 6º - “ Estoy contento, aunque comenzaba muy retrasado, décimo tercero, he realizado una buena salida. La lluvia y la pista mojada han complicado todo mucho, he sido muy prudente por que no quería echar a perder la carrera. He comenzado a llevar mi ritmo y me he sentido muy bien con el comportamiento de la moto. En un momento me he quedado bloqueado en el segundo grupo pero después de conseguir superarlo he conseguido rodar en el grupo de cabeza hasta el final. La lluvia en las últimas vueltas me ha impedido la visibilidad era imposible ver con el agua que salpicaba el piloto que me precedía además la cúpula de la moto se me ha empañado y no veía nada. No ha sido un fin de semana fácil y la lluvia sigue impidiendo el trabajo y desarrollo de la moto que para nosotros es de vital importancia. La temporada empezaba muy bien quizás por que los circuitos eran los que habíamos usado para los test, ahora sin embargo llego sin referencias a trazados desconocidos para mi con la nueva cilindrada y esto nos hace comenzar un paso atrás que el resto. Ahora lo importante es encontrar el setting y puesta a punto de la moto, este resultado es importante nos devuelve la moral a todos y nos hacia falta!!”.

I have some minor quibbles -- the fourth set tiebreaker should have included in its entirety and the amazing return by Federer on the last game of the match (see this clip at timestamp 3:46) isn't there at all. Nevetheless, it is a great compilation and a wonderful gift to all Federer or Nadal fans.

Watch the whole thing! (But if you are pressed for time, just watch the segment from 8:05 to 8:30 documenting the part of the now legendary fourth set tie-breaker that led commentator Andrew Castle to exclaim - "The two best passing shots of the tournament without doubt have just taken place on the last two points.")

While watching the nail-biting Federer-Nadal men's final last Sunday on NBC, I couldn't stand the advertising breaks. So I did what many people do, played a game of 'media tennis' --toggling between TV and a laptop, TV and radio. The official web site of Wimbledon had a great digital scoreboard that beat the one on TV.

I am referring to what they call the 'Slam Tracker' (left), a dynamic scoreboard with the interactivity we have come to expect. I could, for instance, click on icons to get details of the Swiss and Spaniard, and switch to scores on a different court in another window.

I then settled for muting the TV and logging on to Radio Wimbledon, that changed the game, so to speak. Especially when the game was stalled due to rain in the 3rd set. Later I discovered the commentary was a few seconds shy of being 'live,' but two things made me stay tuned: passion and interactivity.

As with the real game, media tennis has its tie-breaker moments. TV serves up high def pictures, multiple cameras angles, terrific slo-mo replays, and close-ups of royalty in the stands. Radio then slams a return with the commentators tripping over their vocabulary unable to describe the volleys and the 119 mile per-hour aces. It sure gets your adrenalin going.

As Federer succomed to Nadal I wasn't sure whom to cheer for, the box that made me lean forward, or the box that made me lean back.

In the end I chose a hybrid medium called Web-Radio-TV, and it made this historic finale a rich media experience.

El deporte español está de moda. La prensa deportiva señala que estamos ante el Siglo de Oro de nuestro deporte, y los éxitos cosechados en los últimos años así lo demuestran.

En el deporte Rey, España se acaba de proclamar, de una manera más justa imposible, campeona de Europa por naciones, venciendo a toda una tricampeona de Europa y del Mundo, como es la siempre temible Alemania. Y venciendo en los cuartos de final de dicha competición a la actual campeona del Mundo, la selección italiana. Además, nuestros jugadores son estrellas en sus equipos internacionales, como es el caso de Fernando Torres (Liverpool), autor del gol de la victoria en la final, o del catalán Francesc Fábregas, que es indispensable en el Arsenal inglés. Casillas, Ramos, Iniesta, Silva…y todas las jóvenes promesas que se avecinan (hay que recordar que las selecciones inferiores son varias veces campeonas de Europa y del Mundo) nos hacen soñar con un gran futuro futbolístico para nuestra Selección y nuestros clubes. Pero esto no se queda aquí.

El baloncesto ha llegado a lo más alto, siendo campeona del Mundo en 2006 y con grandes jugadores en la NBA (los que estaban y los que están, como Pau y Marc Gasol, Rudy, Navarro, Calderón…). Y el año pasado en Madrid, la Selección se proclamó subcampeona de Europa, al perder por un punto la final frente a Rusia, con un último lanzamiento de Pau que hicimos todos, pero que no pudo entrar. Y el futuro está presente en Rudy, Ricky Rubio, Víctor Claver…y los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín este verano deberían suponer el poder superar esa medalla de plata, mitificada en el baloncesto español, que consiguieron los Corbalán, Epi, Iturriaga…frente a Estados Unidos en los JJ.OO. de Los Ángeles ’84.

La alegría deportiva más reciente ha sido, como no, la victoria en Wimbledon de Rafa Nadal frente al mejor tenista del Mundo (y seguramente de la historia), el suizo Roger Federer. Pero es que además Nadal es el vencedor de las últimas cuatro ediciones del prestigioso Roland Garros francés. Y sólo tiene 22 años. Pero en la competición de tierra batida más famosa del circuito ATP, Nadal no ha sido el único vencedor español del nuevo siglo. Albert Costa y Juan Carlos Ferrero lo vencieron en 2002 y 2003, respectivamente, demostrando que es un territorio “made in Spain”. Además, a nivel nacional, el conjunto español venció en la edición del 2000 y 2004 de la Copa Davis, siendo finalista también en 2003. Otros tenistas como Robredo o David Ferrer también nos dan alegrías deportivas, al llegar a fases finales de algunos torneos.

En el mundo del motor, el dominio español de los últimos años se ha prolongado. En coches, Dani Sordo (rallies) y Fernando Alonso son nuestros estandartes al máximo nivel. Sordo, con tan solo 25 años, es el aspirante a nuevo “Carlos Sáinz”, estando en uno de los mejores equipos de la competición, como es Citroën. Y de Alonso qué se puede decir. El piloto más joven en conseguir una pole, un podio, una victoria y un Mundial de la historia. 2 veces campeón, en 2005 y 2006, hacen del asturiano el mejor piloto de la parrilla, por palmarés que no por coche, y nos hace pensar que volverá a darnos grandes éxitos en este mundo dentro de un año o dos, cuando se vaya a uno de las grandes escuderías de la parrilla (¿Ferrari?). Pero no sólo de coches vive el motor. El motociclismo español está más fuerte que nunca, con un Dani Pedrosa y un Jorge Lorenzo en la máxima categoría, luchando este año por el Mundial. Pedrosa ya ha sido campeón en 125 cc. (una vez) y en 250 cc. (dos veces), al igual que el mallorquín (dos veces campeón de 250 cc.). Pedrosa ahora mismo lidera el Mundial de MotoGP (171 puntos frente a los 167 de Rossi y los 142 de un renacido Stoner) mientras que Lorenzo es cuarto (con 114 puntos). En las categorías ‘menores’ ha habido una victoria más este siglo, aparte de las ya mencionadas. Álvaro Bautista ganó el Mundial de 125 cc. en 2006, y es ahora una parte importante de la parrilla de 250 cc.

A dos ruedas van también Óscar Pereiro y Alberto Contador, vencedores del Tour de Francia en 2006 y 2007. El madrileño Contador también ha vencido este año el Giro de Italia, pero por problemas extradeportivos, no podrá defender su maillot amarillo en el país galo, aunque contamos con la actuación, buena de momento, del murciano Alejandro Valverde, que fue dos veces medalla de plata en el Mundial de ciclismo en ruta, en los años 2003 y 2005. En este Mundial también hemos tenido campeones españoles, como Igor Astarloa (2003) o el tricampeón Óscar Freire, venciendo dos veces desde el 2000 (en 2001 y 2004).

En otros deportes de pelota también somos los mejores. Fútbol sala es el ejemplo más claro, dos veces campeones del Mundo y dos veces campeones de Europa desde el 2000, siendo a la vez nuestros clubes los grandes dominadores de la competiciones internacionales. En waterpolo, tras la gran generación del 96, fuimos campeones del Mundo en 2001 y bronce en 2007, igual que en el europeo de 2006. En balonmano, con Juan Carlos Pastor a la cabeza, España fue campeona del Mundo en 2005. Y también a nivel de club, España es la dominadora de las grandes competiciones.

En el triatlón, Iván Raña y Javier Gómez Noya también han sido campeones del Mundo y de Europa en este siglo, y en natación Gemma Mengual es nuestra máxima exponente, que no la única, consiguiendo varias medallas, y de todos los ‘colores’, en Europeos, y alguna medalla en Mundiales.

En este artículo no aparecen la gran cantidad de campeones españoles, pero hemos tenido que acortar por la gran extensión del mismo. Aún así, es evidente que El Ocho recuerda y anima a todos y cada uno de ellos, aunque sea en el deporte más minoritario del Mundo.

Most hometowns give their champion athletes a commemorative stamp or something, but Rafael Nadal's hometown of Mallorca had an asteroid named after him. This particular asteroid was discovered in 2003 at the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca and was previously called 128036. I guess win you win a match like that you deserve something a little more than a postage stamp.

When I'm in my fifties or sixties, I want to be able to tell my kids about Federer and Nadal. Roger vs. Rafa has already turned into a great rivalry. It's 12-6 Nadal, but that doesn't mean that Nadal "owns" Federer, as I've heard some uninformed talking heads say. The majority of their matches (10) have been on clay, with Nadal holding a 9-1 advantage. Here are the results of those matches:

While Nadal has dominated in the sense of victories on clay, only his French Open win this year was truly dominant. Federer has beaten Nadal on clay, and he has had his chances at other times, including a match point in Rome in 2006 as well as a big lead in the first set in Hamburg this year. Nadal has taken two from Federer on hardcourts, but only one since 2004, and none since 2006. He has not been able to get past Federer in the Masters Cup the past two years, and Federer's win last year was a dismantling. On grass, they seem to be equals, with Nadal improving each year.

I've seen several of their matches, and I still am somewhat mystified at the results Nadal has had against Federer. Maybe his game is just well-suited to frustrate Federer, much like David Nalbandian's game frustrates Federer. Or perhaps he's just in Federer's head. Roger has always said the he doesn't have to prepare for any opponent other than Nadal, meaning that if he plays his game well, he can defeat anyone other than Nadal without specific preparation. I don't know. I'm normally not one to give too much credence to the mental game. Now it does play a part. I think it did at Wimbledon this year. My opinion is that the beatdown Federer received at Roland Garros was in his mind. He dropped the first two sets with some poor decisions, then started to serve the way he could - and should against Nadal - and he was able to come back. I thought he had a mental edge going into the final set, but Nadal was able to fend him off.

One thing I noticed about this year's Wimbledon as opposed to last year is that Federer beat himself this year. Last year Rafa clearly outplayed Roger, but Federer's serve saved him. This year, Federer had lots of winner, but way too many unforced errors. He's still getting frustrated by Nadal's ability to track down shots as well as that lefty forehand to his backhand. On grass, I think Federer should counterpunch Nadal: just give him slice backhands and make Nadal force things, thus producing errors. It's always when Federer tries to force things that he gets burned by Federer. It wasn't until the last three sets that Federer finally started serving the grass-court way: serve out wide and then knock the return into the open court. He also found that Nadal had a terrible time returning Federer's second serves; the kick serve to his backhand was giving him all sorts of trouble.

Has Federer slipped or has Nadal just improved greatly? Hard to say. I think Federer has lost some of his mental advantage (there I am talking about the mental game again). In 2004-2006 he lost only 15 matches total. He went 74-6, 81-4, and 92-5. Yikes! He had so many guys just psyched out and beaten before they even set foot on the court. Now players have hope. Remember that third round Australian Open match against Janko Tipsarevic? He began to believe and it took a monumental effort from Federer to fend him off. This year, Federer has already lost nine times - as many as all last season. He even lost to Andy Roddick! He's dropped matches this year to Mary Fish, Andy Murray, and Radek Stepanek. Well, last year he fell to Guillermo Canas twice and to Filippo Volandri, so I wouldn't say that's much of change.

Nadal has been #2 for over three years now, and he's still in that slot. In order to surpass Federer, he's going to have to perform well on hardcourts, something he hasn't done in the past. The last two years he has suffered a major drop-off in performance after Wimbledon. Last year in particular was disappointing. He lost in the fourth round to David Ferrer at the U.S. Open, then was demolished in straight sets by David Nalbandian in consecutive tournaments (6-1, 6-2 in Madrid and 6-4, 6-0 in Paris). He lost to Ferrer again at the Tennis Masters Cup round robin stage. His final match of the year was his 6-4, 6-1 lost to Federer. He's going to have to do better than that if he hopes to become #1.

I think we need to keep the rivalry separate from their places in history. While Nadal is a great player - and maybe the greatest clay-courter ever - his place in history is nowhere near Federer's. He has 5 Grand Slam titles, while Federer has 12. Federer has 7 Grand Slam titles on hard courts; Nadal has 0. Federer has 4 Tennis Masters Cup titles; Nadal has not even made it to a final in that event. The most telling statistic is this: Federer has made it to 17 straight Grand Slam semifinals, while Nadal's best streak is 3 (current). Since 2004, Federer has made it to the finals of 15 of 19 Grand Slams, winning 11 of those finals. He once made it to 10 straight Grand Slam Finals. Until Nadal does half of all that, he can't be mentioned in the same breath as Federer when it comes to all-time greatness.

It goes without saying that the press attention surrounding Nadal over the coming weeks is going to be huge since he just won the most important and respected tennis grand slam event of the year!  You will no doubt see Nadal appearing on TV, in posters on business cards and on all forms of leaflet printing and flyer printing.

Is Nadal going to continue with this form?  Yes, However the loss suffered by Federer in my opinion is going to spur him on to come back better than ever!  My prediction is that Federer will go on to win the US open and the end of year masters event.

Only time will tell!

La historia está hecha para que algunos hombres la cambien. Manolo Santana fue pionero en 1966 y Rafa Nadal ejerció de sucesor 42 años después en el All England Club, la catedral del tenis. Hasta hoy allí reinaba un suizo llamado Roger Federer que parecía invencible, un extraterrestre con raqueta. I gave up on tennis after Pete Sampras hung his boots and been more a casual follower of the game. The game has changed a lot over the years. It has become a power game and the audience love it. I definitely miss the days of Serve and Volley which was beautiful to watch. The Russians and Serbians have taken over the Women's field adding the much needed glamour quotient post - Graf and Sabatini while the Williams sisters depending on their mood either blow away their opponents or sulk in the oblivion.

This is the first time i watched Federer (YES!) and i loved his game more than Nadal's. Nadal ran up and down like a rabbit putting almost all shots in Federer's court. I believe Nadal can play for two straight days like that. Despite rain interruptions, the game was tight and I was not disappointed though I would have looved it had Federer won. IMO, at this rate, Nadal would burn out in the next 2 years. Remember, power players have never made it big in Tennis.

Andy 'the next Henman' Murray played a brilliant 4th round match and lost steam against Nadal accepting that Nadal was too good for him. He is the best thing since slice bread according to the press here. Sure he is talented but would be QF or a SF player at most.

And i think the 1990 finals between Becker and Edberg was the best.
