Crystal told me Manresa is also known as "The French Laundry of the South", and I am inclined to agree. (Though perhaps "south" is a little misleading as it isn't really in Southern California or Southern USA, but rather South Bay.) Manresa is right up highway 17 from Santa Cruz, located in Los Gatos, making it a considerably shorter drive than French Laundry.

That evening's menu:

Third sweet dish: Hazelnut ice cream, passion fruit sorbet, grapefruit gelee, hazelnut schmear
---Not Pictured---
Mignardise: strawberry pate de fruits and chocolate madeleines

Manresa was amazing. For only having two Michelin stars (compared to French laundry's three), I have to say that I enjoyed my dinner here more. The service was comparable to French Laundry's, and the slightly less stuffy atmosphere led me to talk more with the waiter and enjoy myself more. They also have a farm somewhere in the Santa Cruz area where they get all their produce, and probably their eggs too, and you can taste the difference.

The awesome: oyster croquette, arpege farm egg, from the garden, sixth savory dish, and second sweet dish. The oyster croquette had everything French Laundry's gougere lacked. This thing oozed flavor and was deliciousness in a bite. I think I had something similar to the arpege farm egg at Chef Mavro's once and remembered really enjoying it. Manresa did not let me down. This thing was amazing. I was taken aback a bit when I heard them say maple syrup, but the syrup blended with the egg and whipped cream quite well and was very enjoyable. Their "from the garden" (yes, this was the only description given to us) dish was absolutely incredible. At first I was not terribly impressed with it. It seemed to be a very nice salad with a foam dressing, but as I dug deeper into the dish it surprised me. At the bottom were three different sauces: red, green, clear. Each had a distinct flavor that meshed well with the rest of the dish. There were also vegetables that weren't of the green and leafy variety providing different textures and tastes. This dish truly amazed me and was perhaps the most memorable of the evening. The sixth savory dish, despite me forgetting what the protein was, tasted delicious. Crystal said this was her favorite savory dish of the evening, and I might be inclined to agree. The only thing I didn't like was the dehydrated grapes. They packed too much flavor in one bite and threw off the cohesiveness of the dish. Otherwise it was awesome. The second sweet dish surprised me with its flavor and texture. The tea ice cream wasn't too strong and tasted quite nice. The candied rice added a nice crunch to the dessert, making this my favorite sweet course.

The not quite as awesome: the beggar's purse and the first sweet dish. The presentation of the beggar's purse was quite cute (a won ton pi tied at the top with a green onion), but the flavor just wasn't there. I wasn't terribly impressed with the first sweet dish. The hibiscus flavor was a little too tangy for my tastes.

Also worthy of note: the ice plant and the tide pool. The ice plant from the first savory dish was quite interesting. It had a nice crisp texture, and the flavor was also very unique. The tide pool was pretty amazing, and would be up there with the awesome if it weren't for the foie. The flavors, sans the foie, went really well together. The abalone was on point and I even enjoyed the uni, but when I got a bite of the foie, the change in flavor jarred me so much that I have to say that it wasn't an awesome dish. The texture of the foie went well with everything, but the taste, not so much.

Overall: The chefs at Manresa provided a truly amazing dinner. I can't say that I've had anything better or more interesting elsewhere. Manresa delivered where French Laundry didn't. It was innovative, exciting, surprising, and amazing. The prices at Manresa were also slightly more reasonable, with the chef's menu being $145 per person without tip. When I factored in the tip it was still about $50 cheaper per person than the lunch at French Laundry. Perhaps Thomas Keller should take a few lessons from David Kinch and spice up his menu at French Laundry a bit.

Is anyone else tired of tasting menus at fancy restaurants? In the past year or so, we have tried the tasting menus at some of the most critically acclaimed spots in the country, including Le Bernardin in New York (three Michelin stars), Manresa in Los Gatos (two Michelin stars) and Sona in Los Angeles (one Michelin star). The food was, for the most part, delicious, and yet, I somehow left feeling slightly unsatisfied.

At Sona, in particular, where I took Victor for his birthday, I was still hungry when I walked out the door, which is really kind of painful when you've dropped more than $300. The meal itself was like one big culinary tease. Each of us was given something different to taste, and, of course, we had to share. That initially sounded like a great idea because we got to try double the dishes. But each course was no more than two bites, which means we literally got a single bite of everything we tasted. Now granted, we have big appetites, but it just didn't feel like enough food -- or at least not enough of any single dish -- to make me happy and justify the price.

The chef was out of town during our visit to Manresa, and again, I was underwhelmed. The meal just wasn't that memorable. Le Bernadin was the best of the three, with some exquisite sauces that made me want to lick the plate. But I think I may skip the tasting menu in the future. They just seem to lack cohesion, and it always feels like you're paying more for a less complete experience.

I jo ho deixo aquí.

I, bona nit a tothom!

| View Show | Create Your Own

but in vastly different things. Wilkinson managed to lead England to a victory over France in today

but in vastly different things. Wilkinson managed to lead England to a victory over France in today's World Cup Rugby match. It was a low scoring, frustrating game to watch. Both sides had brilliant moments, but each had a hard time finishing. I'm by no means a hardcore England fan, but I do think that Wilkinson is one of the most handsome men in world-class rugby...

My victory is much smaller: I've figured out how to format photos so they look pretty when I press "publish" here at wordpress. Because my entry point into this community (which, on day one, is still very one-sided and awkward-feeling) is knitting, it seems only fitting to share a bit.

Here is Fetching, from Knitty. This project made me feel like a Knitter (capital K). Directions were easy to follow, and the payoff was close to immediate. I remember taking this to a coffee shop and just knitting row after row, happy as a clam to be displaying my newfound addiction. (Coffee is my first, though I prefer to think about my coffee intake as directly proportionate to my personal happiness level. It has nothing to do with caffeine. That is bad for you. Happiness, on the other hand, cannot be bad.) Back to Fetching.

I don't have any pictures of the finished object, but these were on my wrists every morning this summer as I watched the sunrise, hands clasped around a delicious cup of coffee on the back porch. Early risers get press-pot coffee. Late risers get cowboy coffee. Sadly, Boh (who is both snoring AND dreaming right now) managed to grab one and gnaw apart the bind off and a few rows of my hard work, so they are in the "learn to repair" pile. As a relatively new knitter, I have a burgeoning love affair with color. There is definitely a bright pair of Fetching in my future.

Here is a pair I made on request for a friend. (Yarn for both: as recommended, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, needles: US 6) This pair went even faster! See Pam model:

Discovering Knitty was a momentous occasion -- I think I looked at every single pattern, including Calorimetry, which blew me away. The concept is cool, and I remembering thinking I might actually wear it, but that wasn't it. The model in the pictures -- I know her! From college! What was she doing, here in the internet pages of my brand new, all consuming addiction? Apparently, a lot of people knit. Or know people who knit. That made it feel even more accessible. (I did, actually, make Calorimetry, but was lazy and did not swatch. I know, I've learned my lesson. It is very pretty, but also just a bit too large. It may work as a neck warmer. I will be making another, maybe in Malabrigo -- saw the one over at tentenknits and it is beautiful. I have my first skein, which is destined to be Foliage, from the Fall Knitty, but right now I just get it out and touch it.)

One more Knitty picture: Manresa. These leg warmers are awesome. I am still surprised that I just decided I could make these. I started them right after Fetching, a week into learning. Most of my summer knitting was happening by headlamp, in my sleeping bag, so I decided to leave the chart and colorwork here in my teeny tiny house. The last time I snapped a picture, here's where I was. Fall is finally here, and these will be very toasty when I finish them. I should pick them up again.

That's all for now -- I have to save a few pictures for when I run out of things to tell you all!
