Kaká é outro desse time.

Guilherme

I moved back to the UK in March, having spent a year abroad. I live in a shared house with housemate

I moved back to the UK in March, having spent a year abroad. I live in a shared house with housemates who have swapped and changed several times since I've been here. We've had the psycho Chemistry student, the Spaniard who almost did a bunk without paying, the Korean guy in the attic and the video artist who has the face and charm of a toad.

I was quick to settle in and, after a decent interval, fell squarely in love with my Muslim landlord (forgot to mention him - he lives upstairs). This unfortunately saves me no rent whatsoever and the only reason I mention he's a Muslim...well, in fact there are two: 1) because he is and 2) because it's an issue - not with either of us, but with his parents. Well, it would be if they knew, but that's a long story.

The house is in a rough area of Manchester, but I've never had much trouble here - I guess it's just a case of looking like you know where you're going and crossing your fingers that others fall for it. So far, it seems to have worked.

Home is pretty simple right now apart from Toadface, who seems to have a penchant for stealing my orange juice and leaving hairballs the size of kittens in the bath. She's pretty pungent too (in that grungy, smells-like-an-old-tent kind of way) so the general Ambi-Pur budget has had to increase. Am currently plotting with the man in the attic, trying to figure out some way to make her leave.

Talking of politics trying to cope with capitalism’s erratic moves (see our last post), UK Cha

Talking of politics trying to cope with capitalism's erratic moves (see our last post), UK Chancellor Alistair Darling has come up with another wheeze to try and save Britain's collapsing property market -- now on the floor after a speculative frenzy to the tune of easy credit. Repossessions are dramatically up, not least in Manchester, a city often labeled as the 'UK's debt capital'.

First, the Chancellor tried to encourage the banks to clear up their own mess -- with a bit of public money. Interesting isn't it how (private) banking crises always try and turn themselves into (public) fiscal crises? And in both rich and poor countries, too (see Jay Rosengard on East Asia here, Willem Buiter's blog, and Managing a Bank-Specific crisis: A UK perspective from the Bank of England, no less).

Now, the Chancellor is going to help local authorities and housing associations buy up unsold properties and help people facing repossession with mortgage rescue schemes. We leave it to our readers to figure out whether this is good or bad social policy (it's good for the banks since the schemes reduce their bad debts: that fiscal connection again). It certainly reflects the political battering the government is taking. Today's Times -- with a nice photo of the 'Chimney Pot' regeneration in Salford -- sums it all up:

"This latest strategy highlights the increasing influence of Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrats' Treasury spokesman, a man as deft at articulating the concerns of Middle Britain as he is at the paso doble in the ballroom".

Meanwhile, the UK property market seems unable to get to its feet. Dance on.

The weapons stash was found by police who raided a house in Keddleston Avenue, Longsight, on Thursday.

A homemade sub-machine gun, two Ingram Mac-10 machine guns, an Enfield revolver and an Urwin Dale self-loading pistol were recovered at the house.

Officers also seized 450 bullets, a crossbow, cannabis, and 150 ecstasy tablets. Two men have been arrested.

They are being questioned on suspicion of unlawful possession of firearms and drugs, Greater Manchester Police said.

The guns will now be forensically examined.

Chf Supt David Keller said: "The recovery of such a major haul of weapons is a success not just for the force but for the people of Manchester, as we have stopped these guns from getting onto the streets and into the hands of people who would use them.

"We will continue to target those who use or carry firearms and the message is clear: 'If you possess these weapons, we will be coming through your door.'"

It's Friday at last!!!!! Work has been mega busy this morning, CW is off so it's just me getting everything, it's good though, hopefully the day will go quickly. Just having my wee cup of tea the now.

My mood has been up n down since last night. I spoke to MM on the phone before he started work and he was asking if I was ok, I said yes, I just wished I could see him more. He said "I know, it's a shame I couldn't get a job in Glasgow or I could of met you for lunch all the time" I said yeah... but then I was thinking, I hope that's not all he thinks I want, or what he wants, to see him at lunchtime, I want to be going out with him, staying over at his house or mine etc etc. So later I txt him saying something along those lines, and I woke up to a voicemail saying that he wasn't very happy I sent that text and that I need to stop thinking too much. And he's right so I'm really trying my best not to. He had also txtd saying that we were definately going to London :) So now I suppose I'm not going to Manchester. I really want to go with MM it's just that I think I should see my friends more... and have more fun with them. But not this time coz I love being with him and I love London.... Hmmm... have to stop thinking about that too much! We went to London this month but it was kinda ruined as I got a bad headache. Right, def going to London and I'm going to love it!!!

I think I've got to start thinking of my relationship as an added extra to my life and not a part of it. Don't know if that sounds right but I mean I need to stop kinda expecting to see him so much and just take things as they come and if I see him I see him, and not rely on him so much for my happiness. I need to learn to be happy without a man. That sounds so strange because I have a man!!!! But I can't let that be the only reason I'm happy. If anyone does read this I hope you know what I mean ha ha.

Wavy hair again today :) also dying of cramp :( I'm back on the pill so it's not as bad as usual but still pretty hellish.

Going out with LC etc tonight. Someone in their work is having a night out n they're all asking friends to go too. Don't think I'll mention Roisin tonight I'll leave it for another time.

I'm wearing black bra, black & pink lacy knickers, grey pinstrip trousers, little navy top, hot pink cardi and my blue Lacostes! And my hair is down n wavy. Wearing usual make up (Benefit Boi-ing, Oh La Lift, High Beam & Posie Tint, and 2 Faced Lash Injection mascara) plus a dark blue Urban Decay eyeshadow called Adore (I think).

xoxo

...well, possibly Walsall, since my old schoolfriend Rachel is getting married. (The 'possibly' is because she only invited me five days ago. Over Facebook. But that's probably a whole other blog.) But I will also definitely be going to the Exodus Festival, a celebration of Manchester's refugee communities - I'd never heard about this before but it sounds amazing. And not just because it's free, and not just because there will be an Eritrean coffee ceremony. (Anything that involves a formal celebration of, or involving, coffee is good, yes?)

Also this weekend, I shall be at the Stitch & Creative Crafts Show in the G-Mex/Manchester Central. This is an event showcasing all the sorts of creative things I wish I was good at but am patently not - sewing, cardmaking and so forth - but I will be there with Manchester Oxfam, as this weekend they are stitching together their massive blanket. This is a creative campaign to highlight the global issue of maternal mortality - the sad and simple truth that, while giving birth safely is something women in the West can largely take for granted, worldwide 1400 women die every day in pregnancy or childbirth.

Oxfam are really good at putting a twist on the traditional petition (I particularly enjoyed helping out with the Tanabata campaign earlier this year - we had a cardboard tree for people to hang their 'wishes' on at a folk event in the Northern Quarter, which was also where I first encountered The Bee's Niece, and for that opportunity alone I and my folky friends are eternally grateful) and I think this one is a cleverly bittersweet way of bringing home the contrasts between the uncertainty, danger and - of course - poverty facing so many new mothers in the developing world, and the warm fuzzy armfuls of gifts brought to mothers in our own stellar NHS maternity units. Blankets are of course among the traditional new-baby presents, and as such when my mom was pregnant with my sister Annie, an aunt gave all of us older sisters knitting sets and told us we had a few months to learn. That was over sixteen years ago and I am yet to learn to knit, so sewing the petition-squares together will be my first contribution to a very valuable campaign. I was asked to bring friends but frankly don't think I have any who want to spend their afternoon sewing...any takers?

Seany Wright-Wright-Wright is BACK! It took that unexpected bombshell today to get me blogging. I can get my signed Sean Wright-Phillips shirt out again.

We City fans love Seany Wright. I can't wait to see him back in a City shirt. I have to admit to have been rather disheartened with football over the last few weeks. Now Sean is back and we are still in the UEFA Cup. What a great day for the Blues.

While on the subject of football, if you haven't voted for your favourite player in the Northwest Football Awards 2008, you can vote here. The winners will be announced at the Gala Awards Dinner at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 17th November.

As for me, I've been busy doing other things, hence the blog silence. Work's been quite hectic since coming back from the States. That, plus I've been addicted to the Olympics. And enjoying spending time with my gorgeous son, who is just amazing and is growing up too fast. But now I'm back...

I can’t drive, I sometimes cycle, but a lot of the time when getting from A to B in Manchester

I can't drive, I sometimes cycle, but a lot of the time when getting from A to B in Manchester I use the buses.

If you use the popular and majorly busy Oxford/Wilmslow Road route, then the buses are frequent, if a little show in traffic. The dominant company by far is Stagecoach, who also are responsible for Magic Buses, and soon to be the new owners of the small company R. Bullock. After the demise of UK North, due to a very unfortunate accidental-death-oops-no-driving-license incident, Finglands are now the only alternative to the monster that is Stagecoach.

I bloody hate Stagecoach.

In fairness, their buses usually have a healthy supply of Metros, and attract fewer students (unless you're on a Magic Bus), but I have had enough of those blue and orange beasts financially raping me more and more with every passing year.

When I started university, a weekly Stagecoach pass (a 'Megarider') was £7. Now, it's £10. I know that might not seem much, but they've started to raise the prices faster and faster, averaging a pound a year on passes and about 20-30p a year on single fares. Yes, petrol has gone up, and bla bla bla inflation bla bla, but Finglands manage to keep their prices reasonable and have a lot of buses on the roads. I'll admit they are a bit skankier, and never have newspapers in the mornings, but they are cheaper and are a local company which just seems more appealing somehow.

The final nail in the coffin was when I recently went hurtling down the slippery stairs of a moving Stagecoach bus. It hurt, I can tell you, and my arm and bum came out a shocking shade of violet. You may say it's not the bus's fault, but I swear it laughed at me when I got off.

So Stagecoach, I'm afraid to say that we're through. You've raised your fares one too many times. Physical abuse was the last straw. It's Finglands all the way for me now.

Anem a pams:

Grup A: CHELSEA, ROMA, GIRONDINS i CLUJ.

Grup B: INTER, WERDER BREMEN, PANATHINAIKOS i ANORTHOSIS.

Grup C: BARÇA, SPORTING LISBOA, BASILEA i SHAKTAR.

Grup D: LIVERPOOL, PSV, MARSELLA i ATLETICO.

Grup E: MANCHESTER, VILARREAL, CELTIC i AALBORG.

Grup F: LIO, BAYERN, STEAUA i FIORENTINA.

Gup G: ARSENAL, PORTO, FENERBAHÇE i DYNAMO KIEV.

Hmmm hmm hmmm. Peesh. Well it's not peesh, I shouldn't complain, it's not a bad dilemma to have. Well it is but at least I have 2 good options n it's not that if I make the wrong choice I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Hopefully not anyway ha ha!

Well a couple of months ago I got a text from PW asking if I wanted to go n see Roisin Murphy in Manchester in November with him n LC and now also SB. So I said yes obviously n gave him the ticket money at the bbq. So that's fine. But tonight the Champions League draw was made, and that week we're playing a team in Denmark, and it's not that I'd be going, but MM (loverboy) is going of course, and he's flying from London. So he said that when they go back to London after the game, the rest of them would come home but he could stay there, and I could go down n join him for a few days/the weekend. How nice :) thing is; it's the same time as Roisin :-/ xoxo

A man with tight plaid pants on shakes his ass to the groove of break beats. Behind him, a girl with long braids mimics his moves, aligning herself to his gyrations without ever touching him. I’m seeing this out of the corner of my eye, and as I stand in front of a shadowy column in The Darkroom, a club on the Lower EastSide, I find myself wishing I was somewhere else.

.
New York is many things. For some is spark of opportunity. Hidden between the folds of the highly contiguous buildings, packed streets and bright lights is a glimmer of hope. Hope of a dream of making it, doing what thousands (or more correctly hundreds of thousands have done in the past) which is make it big.
I’m not sure if I have these visions of grandeur. The pace of New York is getting to me. I thought girls in DC were flaky, but New York takes flaky o the Nth degree. I live in a world were people don’t answer their phones, sent stilted text messages to convey a point and only seem to want to say hello if they happen to see you online in Gchat.

.Quite disturbing.
Tonight, I floated between a few bars. I watched TV at this bar where the bartender, who is normally quite friendly, gives me a perfunctory hello. I’ve been going there for almost ten weeks and I sent her an e-mail, but something about me bothers her I’m guessing.

.
On nights like these I feel like the shadows themselves. I stand in the darkest corner, watching bodies float by like wraiths. Voices are obscured by loud music, and they all coalesce and sound like the humming of bees overlayed by whatever the DJ decides to play. Its all good and well to enjoy the night life, (I for one, go out mostly because I am bored), but its becoming increasingly pointless. I’ve found myself in various parts of the world doing this same activity; walking around, talking to people, listening to music, sipping on a nameless beer brewed in a factory I’ll never visit… and its becoming meaningless.

.
Tonight I met an English girl who is a designer for Urban outfitters. This brings the number of English women I’ve met since I’ve been in New York to probably fifty. She seems nice enough, telling me that “North England has the nicest people.” But I have no way to verify that. I have no sexual interest in her, even though she is cute. On nights like these I might say hello to certain girls to answer a pressing question. She didn’t look like an American (I thought her outfit looked ‘Mod’ style, and I was correct, but some would say it’s a lucky guess) so, I asked her. Therein lies the rub, dear Brutus.. or should I say Hamlet.

.
Sometimes I talk to break the monotony of my thoughts. At some point I was punching notes into my Ipod about what to write. Beside me, while I was doing this, a girl bounced into a tall fellow, spilling some of his drink on her arm. Of course, the guy she was with (quite wrongly) took offense to this most egregious circumstance and proceeded to confront the tall guy. What made this scene funny was the fact that the guy was French, and spoke broken English. The girl was fine, the guy didn’t spill much beer on the girl to begin with, but the French guy started going on off about something involving his “girlfriend and his sister” which I didn’t understand. Maybe he meant to say “lover” and got the words mixed up. Either way, the tall fellow laughed, patted the French guy on the shoulder and walked back to his friends, who were both a good three inches taller than he was. But you guessed it, the French guy returned, filled with the indignation that has been put on so many television screens in my lifetime. No fight broke out, but a part of me wished the French man would produce a glove, and slap the tall guy in the face, shouting, “Sur incompetent Americaaan!”
Sadly, my life isn’t that interesting. I knew tonight was a lame night because I didn’t even eat my ritual slice of pizza. New York, New York. Oh how I love this love and hate relationship I share with the big apple.
Tomorrow I’ll probably wake up blearly eyed, feeling better about my situation. I’ll forge on towards bigger and better things, or find myself in another shady bar in some other part of the city, standing as always in the shadows, watching life pass me by. Or maybe I won’t do that. I might be jogging down park avenue, looking at the opulence around me, and find myself thinking about the past. Screaming to myself, “What the fuck did I do wrong?”

.
I’ve completely changed. I can’t even play video games anymore to interest myself. TV is boring and I find myself wanting to be far, far away. Maybe I was meant to be a world traveler, one of those guys who grows a thick beard and roams the earth, leaving mostly children in his wake. Maybe that’s my destiny. Who knows.
Yesterday I watched Forrest Gump for what must be the tenth time, and I found myself almost tearing up at certain scenes. The first time I watched the movie, I didn’t really know what love was, nor did I have a strong grasp on the concept of death. Now, watching it after losing people in love and death multiple times, the move seemed completely fresh. I knew exactly how he felt when he was running. I’ve had my 'Jenny' on the mind too, and I’ve watched someone close to me die, seeing their life fade away in a few choked breaths while people around them screamed as if the resonance of their voices would trap the soul into the broken body.

.
I like the fact that even a simple man like Forrest Gump can find love, and find a wife. Since I’ve been in New York, I’m truly convinced that American television perpetuates the ideal of extreme beauty being the most desirable attribute of a mate (male or female) is wrong. Real life shows you that most people are average, and like average people. Above average is scary, a frightening visage of something you can't compare to. Run with the average joe and you are safe. Go with the smart intellectual, and things get fuzzy.

.
Either way, if we live in a world where Forrest Gump can get laid, then there is hope for anyone isn’t there? Who knows. Like I said before, I’m a fly on the wall. I stand in the shadows, watching people go by, hoping a big fucking swatter doesn’t mess with my flow.
Hah. Fly on the wall….

Transatlantic budget carrier Zoom Airlines has admitted it is applying to go into administration.

The announcement came after one of its planes was detained at Glasgow Airport on Thursday for non-payment of air traffic control charges.

UK-Canadian Zoom blamed its problems on the "horrendous" price of aviation fuel and the wider economic slowdown.

People due to travel on Zoom have been told to check their flight's status.

'Support and advice'

Zoom's admission of financial difficulties came after BAA, the owner of Gatwick Airport, said it had been instructed by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority to detain a Zoom plane that was due to fly to the Canadian cities of Halifax and Ottawa.

BAA said another Zoom flight from Glasgow to Vancouver had also been delayed.

"BAA is working with Zoom Airlines to provide support and advice for passengers," said the airport company.

Folha
