I asked on Twitter what was the best way to format these devices such that they could be accessible from both Windows and Macintosh machines. Due to the 140 character limitations of twitter I did not give more details about my environment. None the less I got some fabulous responses. Basically they fall under two options:

- Format the drive for one platform and network share it with the other platform. This can be done either using a drobo share unit, or have one computer sharing it to the others.

- Format the drive for one platform and use a special driver to read it on the other platform. Specifically, I hear good things about using MacDrive to access Mac drives from Windows machines.

I failed to give some background info about my situation, so here it goes. I am working with large proprietary audio files. I have weeks worth of recordings. (currently a little over 100 GB) Each individual file consits of 4 channels of data and is roughly half a gigabyte in size. Due to the large volume of data I would rather process it as fast as possible. In the past I have used a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ unit over the network. Working off from a USB LaCie drive has proven to be several times faster than over the network. Even though I do have a drobo share device I would rather not use it in a day to day basis.

Here are some of my constraints:

a) The overwhelming majority of the computers at work are WinXP PCs, with only a handful of Macs. (this makes me very sad, and so I try to put on a good fight with the powers that be)

b) The majority of the PCs are managed (not by me), which means most of my users can not install any software on their machines. It also means, these machines can only be on the official network (which goes to the internet). Non-managed machines (i.e. the ones where I can install stuff) have no direct access to the internet (sneaker net only...<sigh>)

Most of our work is (also sadly) done in Matlab.

If this were my call and I had control of all machines, I would probably install MacDrive (after some testing) on all WinXP machines that needed access to the data. So the drives would all be formated in HFS+. Since I can not install software in a large number of PCs, This is not an option. Because of networking policies, I can not share the drobo (or the LaCie drives) to the managed PCs (are you getting a sense that I hate managed PCs? because I do, you know)

So I will try the following setup. I will format all drives as NTFS partitions. This means most machines (both managed and non-managed PCs) will be able to access the data natively. The question is what to do with Macs (and Linux boxes). The main purpose of the drobo is to be the central repository of stuff... I think I will not work on it day to day per se. So if I need to use it on a mac I can put is on a non-mananged network and share ir via drobo share. It will not be as fast I would like but it should work much like the ReadyNAS NV+ has in the past. For regular operations I will try connecting the LaCie Drives via MacFUSE & NTFS-3G which claims to be stable now. It is a little risky, but the LaCies should have reduntant data, they are merely a carrying convenience. If I blowup all the data (hopefully not) I still have the data on the drobo.

I welcome any ideas and/or suggestions. This is by no means written in stone yet, and the data sets have not yet grown to unmanageble size (which I'm sure they will eventually). Please drop me comments here or tweet me at @josevazquez.

I'm a makeup fanatic who has a shameless obsession with MAC cosmetics. In fact, every Christmas I can count on my husband buying me a gift card to the store. What can I say? One of the things I love Too Faced for is their ability to be fun and kicky but remain classy. As I get older and finally grow into my adult responsibility (sort of), I try to evolve and keep my style on course with my age. Too Faced offers products that help me look smartly put together while still having a little crazy fun.

One of their products that helps me do that is Starry Eyed Liquid Liner ($17.50). Liquid liners packed with micro glitter, these are perfect for a little extra pop during the day, or a lot at night. Engadget posts a series of unboxing shots, and both Engadget and Macworld posted their first impressions. We've also gathered a few other notes of interest:

- MacBook is half a pound lighter than previous.
- MacBook Pro is two-tenths of a pound heavier than previous.
- Trackpad is surprisingly usable: "The click feels similar to the traditional button -- though slightly more resistive -- and you're able to do right-clicking by either a two-finger gesture or assigning one of the bottom corners." (Video demo) - Engadget
- "Place four fingers on the trackpad and flick them up, and Expose hides all your windows and exposes the desktop. Flick down with the same four fingers, and Expose shows all windows. Swipe left or right and the application switcher appears." - Macworld
- Kodawarisan has already posted some disassembly photos of the new MacBook.
- The mystery port from the leaked photos is the battery indicator (now on the side)
- The MacBook does not have Firewire

- Apple has posted a manufacturing video (QuickTime) of how the new MacBooks are created from a slab of aluminum.
- The $1299 MacBook does not have a backlit keyboard

Después de semanas lejos de mi blog vuelvo a escribir sobre todo lo que ha sucedido últimamente...

 Primero, lo que todos hablan, sufrimos y escuchamos, la Crisis económica...

 Se nos vino la noche encima, después de meses de especulación por fin se dio la tan citada crisis en USA, lo que arrastro a todos los mercados internacionales  y entre ellos OBVIAMENE a nosotros.

 El impacto en cada uno de nosotros será muy variado, desde perdidas de empleo, o congelación de gastos, o más ahorro, o más deudas, pero definitivamente la vida se nos encarece.

 Esta semana inicio un repunte, que esperemos nos lleve cerca del punto inicial de esta crisis que genero una depreciación de nuestra moneda. Crucen los dedos, prendan sus veladoras, y esperemos que las aguas tomen su cauce y, “ya veremos”.

Hablando de cosas más alegres, bueno, lúdicas...

 Los Cowboys no levantan, y parece que inicia el camino en picada de aquí a que termina el mes de noviembre, mes en el que Yo debería de ser él MÁS feliz, puesto que es mi Cumpleaños!!!

Puras malas noticias, Tony Romo lesionado, Pacman Jones suspendido, Terrence Newman lesionado, T.Owens dando show fuera del campo, esto es un Circo, y parece que no va a parar hasta el fin de la temporada en la que veremos como acérrimos rivales califican al postemporada de busca de un boleto al superbowl.

En el Techie World, tenemos varias cosas interesantes, Nueva línea de MacBooks, tal vez es tiempo de comprar la mía, los precios van desde $999  hasta los $2,400 Dlls... Ya están disponibles en México desde la Tienda de Apple en línea, PERO... El precio es estupidamente elevado... Mientras en USA una cuesta $1,299 Dlls, el precio en México es de $20,999.

 En lo que a Web se refiere, cerraron uno de mis sitios mas queridos... toquedequeda.net no va mas!, La mayoría de sus bloggers tiene proyectos propios, por lo que no se les pierde la pista, pero definitivamente había cosas ahí que valían aun mucho la pena, aun a pesar de la separación en varios de sus sitios, (Jambitz, Press-Start, etc.) Se les va a extrañar.

Reflexión de la semana:

Hay cosas que están dentro de cada uno de nosotros que nos hace valiosos para el entorno en el que nos movemos, mas allá de lo que podemos hacer, nos hacen valiosos por lo que aportamos y dejamos en otras personas, esas personas que muchas veces nos hacen sentir un engrane importante en esta maquinaria inmensa que solemos llamar mundo.

Es gente es la que nos hace sentir vivos... Hoy les agradezco a todas esa personas que hacen que mi sistema siga “online”, y con las mismas ganas de seguir compartiendo mundos, ideas, sentimientos.

Nuevo Mac Book Pro, La nueva generación de portátiles,,, es verdad, el enorme desarrollo que significan todas las mejoras en los nuevos modelos. Pero con este rápido desarrollo no da tiempo para acostumbrarse a las cualidades de uno u otro producto y de inmediato ya nos muestran las maravillas del los nuevos modelos,,, joder, jajjaja, la verdad es que es solo una reflexión arbitraria,  el que pueda actualizar sus equipos a esa velocidad ,,,, que lo haga. Por mi parte me maravillo constantemente de los nuevos giros o desarrollos de esta marca llevando sus productos y aplicaciones siempre al nivel siguiente, marcando tendencia.

Die neuen Macbooks und MacBook Pros sind mit Sicherheit die besten Mac-Nootebooks die es je gab und der Umstand, dass man für 1199€ jetzt ein sehr cooles Mini-Macbook-Pro bekommt ist auch schön, denn das ist es, was das neue Macbook ist, nämlich der legitime Nachfolger des Powerbook 12".

Flash Player 10 unterstützt 3D-Animationen und soll damit Entwicklern ermöglichen, intuitiver zu bedienende Oberflächen für ihre Anwendungen zu basteln. Über Adobes Pixel Bender lassen sich neue Filter und Effekte integrieren. Eine neue Text-Rendering-Engine soll kreativere Textdarstellungen ermöglichen. So können sich laut Adobe nun beispielsweise "aufwendige typografische Elemente wie Ligaturen über mehrere Spalten oder um Inline-Bilder herum, von rechts nach links, von links nach rechts, vertikal oder als verkettete Objekte umfließen lassen".

Auch die Audio-Schnittstelle hat Adobe überarbeitet. Sie ermöglicht nun Anwendungen zu erstellen, die beispielsweise MP3-Dateien nachbearbeiten können oder Mischpulte und Sequenzer realisieren. Außerdem wurde der auf niedrige Latenz spezialisierte Audio-Codec Speex zugefügt, um VoIP-Anwendungen zu verbessern. Der Flash Player ermöglicht Anwendungen, direkt auf die Grafikhardware im Rechner zuzugreifen, "um etwa Berechnungen beim Zusammenfügen von Pixelbildern wie Bitmap-Bildern, Filtern, Füllmethoden und Videoüberlagerungen schneller durchzuführen, als es mit einer Software-Lösung möglich wäre", teilte Adobe mit.
