Showcasing Great American Songbook favourites plus a brace of previously unrecorded originals, "Dreamsville" is Carol Kidd's first recording in seven years and marks 25 years of recording for Linn Records. From its supremely gentle and immensely touching opening, a slow-motion It Never Entered My Mind, to the plaintive ballad When I Dream by Nashville-based songwriter Sandy Mason, "Dreamsville" is one of the most finely crafted collection of songs you'll hear this year. "When I Dream" is, of course, something of a signature tune for Kidd, and this new version is the most lyrical and enchanting you could wish for, recordings by Crystal Gayle, Willie Nelson and Nanci Griffith notwithstanding.

Kidd also treats us to a trio of interrogatory classics - How Deep is the Ocean?, How Long Has This Been Going On? and Can't We Be Friends?. Everything sounds effortless, the singer's golden timbre and legato phrasing serving interpretations that sweep you up in their tender embrace. With its constant shifts between major and minor, Cole Porter's It's Alright With Me provides a sudden adrenaline rush amidst the largely ballad-driven set. Kidd gets to flex her majestic upper register and doesn't hold back. Penned by the singer and guitarist Nigel Clark - one of an outstanding quartet of supporting musicians - the two originals There Goes My Heart and Do You Believe sit happily alongside the standards.

Ahead of her forthcoming comeback album, legendary Scottish jazz singer Carol Kidd has been interviewed in The Sunday Post.

The revealing feature lifted the lid the career of the "well-loved singer who has sold thousands of albums and appeared on the bill with Frank Sinatra". It details her "rags to riches" rise from Glasgow's East End to her high profile in Asia where she is known as "The Diva". It goes on to mention her high profile appearances with the late Sir Humphrey Lyttelton and Tony Bennett, describing her story as "like the plot of a movie".

The piece also touches on her family life and she talks candidly about the loss of her partner John Mackay in 2003 and how a move to Majorca has given her inspiration to sing and write songs once again, following an enforced break on health grounds.

"I sit on my terrace and watch the incredible sight of the sun dipping into the sea...then I go in and sit at my laptop and start writing. I'm more comfortable than I've ever been."

Of her singing technique, Carol states that "when I was young my voice was compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. But as I progressed as a singer I found my own voice. Now, hopefully, I sound just like Carol Kidd".

In summation, the article states "And that's a sound thousands of her fans still want to hear".

Ann Hampton Callaway és una de les principals vocalistes contemporànies, però també és compositora, arregliste, pianista i actriu, entre altres menesters. És coneguda sobretot pels seus molt recomanables àlbums d'estudi, però la veritat és que els seus directes són igualment memorables, i també són freqüents les seves aparicions en TV o en el cinema (incloent importants produccions hollywoodienses). Destaca pels seus dots tècnics i el "poderío" de la seva veu, però també convenç en els passatges més lírics i fins i tot en les balades, quan del que es tracta és de transmetre un determinat sentiment. Per altra banda, seria injust parlar d'ella només com vocalista, perquè les seves composicions són molt interessants: ja siguin pop o jazz, es nota que coneix bé l'obra dels grans compositors nord-americà i, en termes generals, el American songbook. En defintiva, una artista crucial per a conèixer el jazz vocal des dels 90. Nascuda el 30 de Maig de 1959, és filla del periodista John Callaway i de la cantant, pianista i entrenadora vocal Shirley Callaway. Va ser aquesta última la qual li va aficionar per la música, doncs interpretava al piano temes de Gershwin i German. Després de ser descoberta per les seves evidents qualitats vocals, va poder iniciar una carrera operística, però va optar per la música que més li agradava, inspirada per Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell o Stevie Wonder. Després de mudar-se a Nova York, aconsellada per George Shearing, va començar a col·laborar amb alguns dels millors músics de jazz. La seva qualitat, la seva simpatia i la seva facilitat per a improvisar han fet d'ella una de les vocalistas més demandades en directe, per aquest motiu hagi actuat amb Wynton Marsalis, la Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra o Keith Lockhart. Pertama kali aku mendengar suara dan lagu Matt Dusk adalah sekitar awal tahun 2005, di MTV. Waktu itu ada video Matt Dusk menyanyikan lagu Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad. Aku langsung tertarik mendengar suaranya yang enak didengar, hampir mirip dengan suara sang legenda Frank Sinatra, tapi memiliki gaya menyanyi dan improvisasi yang khas.

Lagu yang waktu itu dibawakannya memang tidak bernuansa jazz yang kental, tapi agak-agak “ngepop”. Meskipun demikian, dari aransemen dan gaya menyanyinya aku bisa merasakan bahwa jenis musik yang dibawakannya adalah fusion jazz di mana akar musik jazz-nya adalah sama seperti yang biasa dibawakan oleh Sinatra, yaitu swing.

Setelah mengunjungi beberapa toko kaset di Jakarta dan tanpa hasil, barulah aku tahu bahwa tidak ada album Matt Dusk sama sekali yang dijual di Indonesia. Akhirnya aku cari-cari di internet dan dari Amazon lah aku beli album Matt Dusk yang berjudul Two Shots secara online. Two Shots ternyata adalah album Matt Dusk pertama yang dirilis secara internasional. Sebelumnya, Matt Dusk pernah merilis beberapa album independen dan lokal Kanada.

Album Matt Dusk berikutnya yang dirilis secara internasional adalah Peace on Earth (mini album khusus lagu-lagu Christmas) dan Back In Town (album terakhir).

Matt Dusk Biography

A Canadian Crooner

Born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1978, Matthew-Aaron Dusk showed promise as a musician from a young age. He was enrolled in the St. Michael's Choir School (Toronto, ON) at the age of seven, where he spent eleven years studying classical music and opera. This area of focus changed significantly at the age of 18, when Matt was introduced to big band music, including singers like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and other jazz musicians.

Dusk attended York University for a bachelor degree in music with a focus on jazz and popular music. Matt graduated with a BFA in 2002, and a year later was signed by Decca/Universal for the recording of his first major release album, “Two Shots”. The album featured many original songs, along with a few standards including “Fly Me To The Moon”, “Please, Please Me” (recorded in the slower more introspective version than that originally recorded by the Beatles), and “Two Shots”, a song originally penned by U2’s Bono in honor of Frank Sinatra. Originally scheduled for a 2003 release date, the release of Two Shots got pushed back to June 2004 when Matt and his management team got word of a new reality TV show appearing on the Fox Network called "the Casino". The Casino (produced by the Mark Burnett (Survivor)), featured two "dot com" millionaires who ventured into the purchase and attempt at revitalizing Las Vegas' Golden Nugget Casino. Matt Dusk was featured as the lounge singer at Zax lounge, trying to make it big by performing in the casino's main showroom. Due to low ratings, the show was not re-signed for a second season, although the exposure Matt Dusk received as an artist, and for his new album was extremely beneficial.

Before signing with Decca/Universal, Matt Dusk recorded four independent albums (Live In Concert Volume I and II, Eggnog and Mistletoe, The Way It Is), and successfully managed his own band, "Matthew-Aaron Dusk and His Swingin’ Little Big Band”, performing up to twenty events per month in Toronto and surrounding area. Matt was also a featured artist on the internet music site, MP3.com, where he received over four hundred thousand spins/downloads of his songs, and even made it to number four out of the top forty with his rendition of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”.

Matt has performed in many locations, spanning the In the late summer and fall of 2004, Matt had an intensive tour scheduled for his album Two Shots throughout Canada and the United States. During this time he made a guest appearance on Canadian Idol, and finished his 2004 tour schedule with a surprise holiday CD release -- "Peace on Earth". Matt’s new mini-album featured six classic holiday songs, plus one penned by Dusk himself, “Christmas is Finally Here”. Matt concluded the year with two performances in Toronto, one at the Winter Garden Theatre, and the other at Nathan Phillips Square as the honorary guest for the 20 th annual New Year's Eve bash.

In 2005 Matt continued his tour schedule with dates scheduled both nationally and internationally. In February 2005, Matt Dusk’s talent was recognized with a Juno Award Nomination in the category of "New Artist of the Year". J'ai insuffisament de culture jazzistique pour pouvoir la comparer à d'autres grandes du jazz vocal contemporain mais moi, Chloe Lévy me fait, un peu, penser à Tori Amos dans le coté un peu décalé et poêtique de sa démarche, bien qu'ici on aie un disque beaucoup plus expérimental.

Vaig descobrir aquest cantant fa uns quinze anys, coincidint amb un concert que va donar a la Vall d'Hebron en que també actuava Kenny G. Aleshores ja em va semblar el mateix que ara: no té mala veu, canta bé, li falta sang. El senyor té un estil definit, no hi ha dubte.

Rendezvous in Rio conté 10 cançons tallades per un patró d'elegància i relaxament, de les quals la que dóna nom al recull és la millor. Si us heu fixat en la portada de l'àlbum, ja podeu ensumar de què parlo. Com dóna a entendre el nom de l'àlbum, la inspiració de la música brasilera és gran, però el talent de Franks aconsegueix que les sambes i el jazz més dolç casin bé.

Un bon disc que no us farà saltar d'alegria, però acompanya mentre estàs fent qualsevol altra cosa.
