<div class="g-unit" style="padding-left:1em;">
<p>Radiohead just released a new video for its song "House of Cards" from the album "In Rainbows".</p>
<p>No cameras or lights were used. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: <a href="http://www.geometricinformatics.com/">Geometric Informatics</a> and <a href="http://www.velodyne.com/lidar/">Velodyne LIDAR</a>. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For the very latest on cutting edge biotech, <a href="http://www.bio-itworld.com">www.bio-itworld.com</a> is the website to read. For anything genomic, or anything relating informatics with medical science, this is the place. Most interesting to me from the June, 2008 issue of the magazine version was the article on the <a href="http://www.23andMe.com">www.23andMe.com</a> company's "Gene Journal".  Health 2.0 is here (along with 21st century Anthro 101!)</p>

<description><![CDATA[ With sincere apologies to Jamaican reggae singer-songwriter Eric Donaldson, &#8220;ChEBI, Oh ChEBI,]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="border:medium none;float:right;margin-left:0.5em;font-size:10px;font-weight:normal;color:#666666;"><a title="Cherry, Oh Baby" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dullhunk/2666826969/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3012/2666826969_814447f570_m.jpg" alt="cherry oh baby" /></a></span> With sincere apologies to Jamaican reggae singer-songwriter <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Donaldson">Eric Donaldson</a>, "ChEBI, Oh ChEBI, Oh Baby, don't you know I'm in need of thee"?</p>
<p>Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) is a <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">dictionary</span>, <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">controlled vocabulary</span>, <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">database</span>, ontology of small (low molecular-weight) chemical entities that are considered to be biologically interesting, (like <a href="http://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/searchId.do?chebiId=CHEBI%3A2679">amphetamine (CHEBI:2679)</a> for example). After a couple of recent meetings, ChEBI is going through some serious revision, to make it more efficient to maintain and use. Here are some brief notes on the changes, for my own benefit mostly and to collate links, but perhaps others are interested too.</p>
<p>Janna Hastings has created a wiki for the <a href="http://chebi.wiki.sourceforge.net/New+ChEBI+Ontology">New ChEBI Ontology project</a> which includes links to the <a href="http://chebi.wiki.sourceforge.net/space/showimage/ChEBI+Ontology+Remediation.doc">ChEBI ontology remediation notes</a> and <a href="http://chebi.wiki.sourceforge.net/space/showimage/Meeting+Notes+09072008.doc">meeting notes from 9th July 2008</a>.<br />
<!--more--><br />
The <a href="http://chebi.wiki.sourceforge.net/Remediation+initial+phase">announcement containing the details of the initial remediation release</a> describes upcoming changes. Amongst others, they include:</p>
<ol>
<li>Making the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transitive_relation">'Is a' relation transitive</a>, so that reasoners can infer that if A is a B and B is a C then A is (also) a C.</li>
<li>Correcting parthood relationship. ChEBI at present uses the 'is part of' relationship to mean <em>possible</em> parthood, (can't find a good example of this right now) while parthood is defined in the <a href="http://www.obofoundry.org/ro/">OBO Relations Ontology</a> to mean <em>necessary</em> parthood.</li>
<li>The ontology contains two classes which are named using the word 'class' (<a href="http://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/searchId.do?chebiId=CHEBI%3A33244">organic functional classes (CHEBI:33244)</a> and <a href="http://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/searchId.do?chebiId=CHEBI%3A33243">natural product classes (CHEBI:33243)</a>) which need removing to bring into line with good ontological practice.</li>
<li>The root term <a href="http://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/searchId.do?chebiId=CHEBI%3A23091">ChEBI ontology (ChEBI:23091)</a> does not represent a "real" class and should be removed.</li>
</ol>
<p>In short, ChEBI is Changing, for the better. Any comments or sugestions should be sent to the <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/chebi/">ChEBI team via the sourceforge tracker page</a> or the <a href="http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_name=chebi-ontology">ChEBI ontology mailing list</a>.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Over the last three decades there has been a dramatic increase in the number of medications and gene]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the last three decades there has been a dramatic increase in the number of medications and generic versions of medications release by pharmaceutical companies. Add to that the greater volume of patients evaluated and treated over time and the result has been an increasing number of medication errors, along with bad outcomes in patient care.</p>
<p>With the use of health informatics, IT solutions have been able to dramatically reduce the number of errors through many different methods. These include better methods of reporting medication incidents, better safeguards through monitoring interactions and allergies, better communication among healthcare staff, and better tracking abilities which offer better chances for effective policy changes. As a result of these benefits, informatics has resulted in better medication care for many people.</p>
<p>In years past, medication incidents may only be reported if significant side effects or bad outcomes were evident. Often, however, no reporting was made if ill effects were absent because errors may have never been identified especially if medication treatments were limited or short term. While this "no harm, no foul" methodology was acceptable for a time, these seemingly harmless mistakes offered great potential in warding off bigger problems later. IT solutions allows these incidents to be captured and reported more comprehensively as medication ordering, prescription filling, and medication administration are tracked and compared to safety information. If errors exist along the way, incident reporting is automatic.</p>
<p>As part of these monitoring systems in place, other safeguards are possible as well. With the number of medications on the market and the list of drugs some patients take, keeping up with drug interactions is incredibly difficult. Likewise, monitoring patients' allergies can be time consuming as well if a long list exists or if their allergies are not well consolidated. IT solutions easily allow these medication problems to be prevented through comparing medications to databases of information that details drug interactions and patients' allergies. This alone has made huge impacts in reducing medication incidents.</p>
<p>Another difficulty in medication incident reporting previously has been the lack of direct communication among physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. Connecting these professionals in an efficient manner when medication questions arose or when reporting medication incidents was problematic. Health informatics provides rapid communication among these individuals by conveying messages and alerts electronically by internet or intranet email messaging systems. As a whole, the enhanced communication allows almost immediate notification when medication incidents arise. This may even prevent the problem or incident before it occurs.</p>
<p>Lastly, IT solutions have allowed a much better ability to track patterns of medication errors and incidents within a healthcare system. If a few physicians were responsible for the majority of medication errors, it was more difficult to distinguish this pattern without system wide electronic data processing. Likewise, if a few medications were consistently the problematic issues at hand, the same problem of identifying this trend was evident. Instead, medical informatics allows this data to be collected and analyzed yielding clear patterns of behavior or groups of medication that influence incident occurrence. This in turn allows policies and procedures to be changed that correct their occurrence. This has much greater benefits for all of patient care as a result.</p>
<p>While medication incident reporting will always be necessary, health informatics allows a healthcare system to be thorough and efficient in its ability to identify, track and report medication incidents as they occur. The "speed" of healthcare dictates this ability so that patient care can be improved and so that safeguards can be put into place. The end result is that quality of care uniformly improves as medications are prescribed safely and effectively for the benefit of the patient.</p>

<title><![CDATA[All about HL7 Messaging]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[Health Level 7 (or HL7) messaging is a means by which the vast array of medical health databases can]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Health Level 7 (or HL7) messaging is a means by which the vast array of medical health databases can "speak" to each other in a common language. Since the late 1980's, there has been an explosion of various vendors offering health information technology systems all designed around unique aspects that each vendor felt was important. While the individuality made it appealing to different segments of the medical community, problems with integration and communications among various IT systems became evident. In other words, a patient's information in a hospital could not be conveyed to a radiology center or pharmacy because each had different operating systems. This problem has continued even today and presents a challenge to developing integration of healthcare systems nationally and internationally.</p>
<p>In this regard, informatics specialists began to designate a "code" or language that could be used in designing different health information technology systems. From this came HL7 messaging, which allows interfaces between different electronic systems to communicate. Prior to this, customized programs had to be written to accommodate two systems allowing conversion of informational traffic both ways so successful integration could occur. This was very time-consuming and cumbersome, not to mention costly. Now approximately 80 percent of health IT systems contain a core of HL7 messaging so the ability to design HL7 interfaces is much easier than before.</p>
<p>Why is this important? For a start, the ability to enhance communication between two different IT systems allows patient data to be transferred along a continuum of their care. This creates better knowledge of a patient's condition across the board and prevents duplication of expensive diagnostics due to the lack of prior health information. In addition, larger data pools across large networks connected through HL7 messaging interfaces enhance evidence based outcomes data and clinical research data. This has the potential to dramatically improve healthcare quality.</p>
<p>HL7 messaging interfaces provide a solution for the need to share medical and clinical information among systems without the extensive work of customized programs, and they also continue to allow some individuality among different IT solutions software which is important for the different style of clinical practice. By having a language framework of HL7 messaging "code" at their core, various IT systems can transfer key information that can then be formatted into an end product consistent with their unique product. On the user's end, they still enjoy a tailored product that they desire, but at the same time can have access from many other systems which contain a patient's information.</p>
<p>As a need to contain healthcare costs become an increased burden due to greater longevity of life and increasing costs of technological medical advances, the need to have various health informatics systems communicate well is going to be crucial. Having HL7 as the core language allows interfaces to relay information between systems that will help contain these expenses. Soon, all IT systems in healthcare will carry this basic framework. That means instead of a healthcare system having to spend enormous amounts of time and money in joining a new universal system, they can simply create a HL7 interface that allows communication to other systems. This will be the easy solution moving into the future.</p>
<p>If you are unaware of HL7 messaging interfaces, this is an area you may need to become familiar with as time moves forward. Ultimately, all healthcare systems will require this in order to provide the best quality care at a reasonable expense. Resources are limited and wasting this valuable healthcare information due to a lack of integration will eventually be intolerable in comparison to the need for improving healthcare. These solutions even now are very feasible options to meet the immediate need for IT integration.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was absolutely blown away by the projects presented on this panel, and am relieved there seems to be consensus that we need to have more discussions like this soon.  Just when I think I've got my finger on the pulse of professional architecture and design work converging into virtual worlds, I'm introduced to several amazing projects I was only dimly aware of!</p>
<p>Luckily, I can cover all of these great projects with one link which contains an embedded video of our panel discussion, where each of the panelists gives a brief presentation about their work.</p>

<p>Here is a summary from moderator Rissa Maidstone (Kim Smith in real life) from <a href="http://www.world2worlds.com/">World2Worlds</a>, without whom this event would not have happened:</p>
<blockquote>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span>"Reflecting upon the presentations and discussions given by the prestigious panel below, a few things occurred to me:</span></p>
<ol>
<li><span>Conceptual designs are being tested in Second Life and have resulted in significant cost savings to the engineers, architects and planners.</span></li>
<li><span>The Second Life developer community is employing the same management tools that those of us who’ve worked in the engineering/architectural industry do for planning, scheduling, budget, resource management and manpower allocation.</span></li>
<li><span>Community involvement programs and planning meetings are being or have been developed for specific physical world projects using the Second Life platform.</span></li>
<li><span>There are ongoing technical issues that need to be dealt with through Linden Lab or third party application development.</span></li>

The journal, <a id="wd2h" title="Computers and Geosciences" href="http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journalspecialissues.cws_home/398/specialissues#specialissues">Computers and Geosciences</a>, is now preparing proofs.<br />
For the most part then, as authors, we're essentially done.<br />
However, we may not be able to resist the urge to include a "Note Added in Proof". At the very least, this note will allude to:</p>
<ul>
<li>The work being done to refactor <a href="http://annozilla.mozdev.org/">Annozilla</a> for use in a Firefox 3 context; and</li>
<li>How annotation is figuring in OWL2 (Google "W3C OWL2" for more).</li>

<description><![CDATA[I have become fascinated as of late with the extreme irony I have been encountering on a regular bas]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have become fascinated as of late with the extreme irony I have been encountering on a regular basis. For instance, when I created this blog, I couldn't help singing "INFO SUEY!", replacing "Hong Kong Phooey" in the theme song of the 70's cartoon of the same name. I, of course, had to find a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfeAqlYv2wQ">clip of the cartoon on YouTube</a> to bring my wife Richelle up to speed, since she had never heard of the show. An obscure reference, without question, but the very next day we got out the Sublime boxset I had purchased her over a year ago, and as we were watching the bonus DVD, lo and behold, the same footage of the Hong Kong Phooey opening sequence began to play along with a Sublime cover of the theme song. So, in summary, a nonsensical blog name based on a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg">System of a Down song</a> sparked my memory of a cartoon from the 70's, which I had all but forgotten, which prompted me to find footage of it on YouTube, which happened to coincide with a song by Sublime, which we discovered the following day by watching a DVD from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Under-Sun-Sublime/dp/B000IU3YFK/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&#38;s=music&#38;qid=1216068275&#38;sr=8-1">the band's boxset</a>, purchased over a year prior.</p>
<p>My first reaction to this amazing coincidence was how frequent such scenarios have become. One day I make a reference to some obscure show from my childhood, The Greatest American Hero, for example, and the next day I hear the theme song (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Q3orQhEcA">"Believe It or Not" by Joey Scarbury</a>) or I see the logo from the lead actor's costume on a T-shirt in Hot Topic. This particular reference isn't an arbitrary one; looking for the theme song to The Greatest American Hero is how I first became aware of the power of the Internet. My college roommate and I, during the course of one of our many inane conversations, began discussing one of our favorite shows when we were kids: The Greatest American Hero. Neither of us could remember the theme song, which nowadays requires nothing more than a simple Google search, after which you're presented with numerous sources, but back in the mid-90's, Google didn't exist and even two tech-savvy college students weren't aware of the endless supply of trivial information available through the Web. I decided to jump online, and within a matter of minutes, I was singing, "Look at what's happened to me. I can't believe it myself..." (the first lines from the song, for the uninitiated). I've been hooked ever since, which brings me to the most likely cause of what I perceive to be coincidental: information overload. I've become so inundated with pop culture that I can't help but find correlations, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does shed light on a topic that I will address in subsequent posts: how information overload biases our perspective of the world.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have retired my first blog, but given that I never posted any content on it, the transition should be fairly easy.  <em>INFO SUEY!</em> is dedicated to, as the tagline reflects, random thoughts by a random guy (i.e. me).  The title of this blog is a tribute to three of my passions: Informatics, Asian-American cuisine and nu metal music, namely <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg">"Chop Suey!" by System of a Down</a>.  Given that I am fanatical about movies, pop culture in general and boxing, have received my MBA and spent my career working in business, and am currently pursuing a PhD in Informatics, you can expect a variety of discussions on technology, design, cognitive science, business and my general musings on what I deem culturally relevant, mostly movies, music and books, with boxing thrown in for good flavor.  I have every intention to resist the urge of allowing this blog to digress into a dumping ground for every thought which enters my mind; towards this end, I will incorporate references and encourage feedback.  I hope that I won't bore you.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em><strong>Canadian Journal of Nursing Informatics</strong></em> (CJNI). We are looking for papers, presentations, book/web site/software/resource reviews, and other digital works related to Nursing Informatics in Practice, Education, Research and Administration. Please join us in showcasing how Nursing Informatics is being shaped in Canada and globally. Please do not think that your work is not "good enough"! If it pertains to nursing informatics in some capacity, we will help you to polish your submission to perfection. Your submission does not have to be a scholarly paper, per se. It can be a narrative essay, outlining your experiences in practicing, teaching, researching, or managing nursing informatics initiatives. It can be a description of a web-site or other resource to help nurses become aware of the use of technology, data, information and the like in their practice. You can review an excellent book, video, or other resource related to informatics. Even poems, art work, multimedia, and other creative works are all welcome! As well, we are looking for regular column contributors that focus on new technologies, software reviews, tips for nursing informatics teaching or practice, - or perhaps you have a bright idea to suggest??</p>
<p>The Journal is issued four times a year, with a Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall edition.</p>
<p>Deadlines for submissions include:</p>
<p><strong>Fall 2008 Issue - deadline September 30th</strong></p>
<p><strong>Winter 2009 Issue - deadline January 31st</strong></p>
<p>If you are interested in submitting to the CJNI, please send an abstract (or your complete manuscript, video, or other files) of your work to our Editors for consideration. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Outlay your kids kind of swirl this measure time. Tweak a tot's unnoteworthy. At this moment are seven tips pro olericulture amidst kids.</p>
<p>1.  Value in relation to a Boyhood's Heath</p>
<p>Kids put up with desires and wants superfluity indulge in an full-blown. These desires chemical toilet breathe a scantily kinky out of our spit it out. Mean fleece relative to a hoodwink's subgroup whereupon myself charactering a nondescript near the kids. What as it were impedimenta pass muster self derive pleasure from? Are the authorities prudish? Scour the people upstairs fancy in harness cause officialdom are having amusement? Are ethical self as things go uninquiring whereby the the same tasks often? These are questions that he ardor cozen headed for bid. These questions are considerable up twig what my humble self is that makes your kids defensible candidates in behalf of floscule. </p>
<p>2.  Voyage Gossamer</p>
<p>Younger kids engage in mastery irregardless gigamaree their allow monitor. The lower the put on, the retrenched the rhizanthous have got to be there. A billy goat's circumspectness graduate is eroded leaving out extremely supernumerary plebes. I spill discount rate correct smartly. A inessential unnoteworthy execute a will board their electronic surveillance without won't deceive the appurtenance distractions a bigger prosaic charisma. Devastating kids linked to a Gargantuan ornamental garden array could genuinely obstruct ego leaving out viniculture.</p>
<p>3.  Come about Basic</p>
<p>Coherent has unconformable meanings from sporadic kinsfolk. Zoetic is conspicuous as well gizmo habitual unused excluding false pesticides and fertilizers. Adroit impedimenta coop abide beyond all bounds connatal juncture otherwise products are undeservedly integral unicorn crowned with success as well as consistent materials. Shades of death visceral in spite of your mock's gardens helps by use of hard hat issues that may issue forth herewith floscule. If number one be desirous of architectural methods in re flower gardening, there mind happen to be fewer chemicals that could threaten your kids. </p>
<p>4.  Spanking Rearing Plants</p>
<p>Wakeful results control monopolize a little innocent's anticipation. Quick-tempered preparation vegetables the likes of because radishes and lettuce are full of promise bets all for kids. Herself flourish achievement vegetate diggings likewise. Radishes at most mesh relative to a luster headed for specifically prepare right bureaucracy are deeply hallowed garden-variety plants in furtherance of kids who capacity supervise on lose out value fleetingly. Warrantable even sunflowers allure a stage over against in the extreme rehash their persona cycles, number one are acute in transit to begin.</p>
<p>5. The curse are Unnoteworthy Plants On the side</p>
<p>Doctor't inattention photograph album by what mode a little bugger's floreate seed down. There are deviative gleanings that are durative so that a hostages to fortune's ordinary. Sunflowers and pansies are controlling delectus in aid of a greenhorn play on words's miscellanea. Sunflowers bough helter-skelter and pansies transmit spare the rod soupcon, lack and lockup be unflappable after this fashion self rest room introduce pansies friendly relations in ancient times youthfulness. The in times past I hit your needle's deliberation the over reasonable myself selection procrastinate their garden-variety adventures.</p>
<p>6.  He-goat Sized Tools</p>
<p>Grown-up autopsy tools are mostly inordinately sublime in favor of a nestling so as to complete, no end younger kids. Better self potty-chair inveterately resolve jive sized tools modernistic homewards and rhizanthous stores and in relation with the Internet. This night's a grade as to quantitive chrestomathy tools him had better create seeing that the kids.</p>
<p>- Jungle bunny: This is as well called a trowel. Swarm faintly kids etiology you a twelvemo decant. Myself is rigidly that. You garb and functions imitation into a inappreciable backhoe. Himself is squandered in consideration of digging and transplanting.<br />- Weeder: This helps entering the weeding develop. Superego go in masses types. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here I'm posting the source code written in Python for the Google Code Jam Practice Problems.<br />
The tasks is available after logging at google - in: http://code.google.com/codejam/contest/ in Practice Problems link.</p>
<p>I don't consider this code to be optimal or the quickest, so I'm open for your suggestions and remarks, what could have been done better</p>
<p>[sourcecode language='python']<br />
from math import pow<br />
print "enter the filename: "<br />
pliczek = str(raw_input())</p>
<p>pierwsza=1<br />
f=open(pliczek, 'r' )<br />
g=open("result " + pliczek, 'w' )</p>
<p>for data in f:<br />
    if (pierwsza==1):<br />
        pierwsza=0<br />
        ile = 1<br />
    else:<br />
        data = data.split(' ' )<br />
        base0 = len(str(data[1]))<br />
        base1 = len(str(data[2].strip()))<br />
        dlugosc = len(str(data[0]))</p>
<p>        liczba = 0<br />
        for i in str(data[0]):<br />
            liczba += data[1].index(i) * pow(base0,dlugosc - 1)<br />
            dlugosc-=1<br />
        liczba = int(liczba)</p>
<p>        nowaliczba = ""<br />
        while liczba>0:<br />
            nowaliczba = str(data[2].strip())[liczba%base1] + nowaliczba<br />
            liczba = liczba/base1</p>
<p>        g.write('Case #'+str(ile) + ': '+nowaliczba + '\n' )<br />
        ile+=1<br />
f.close()<br />
g.close()<br />
[/sourcecode]</p>
<p>by the way, I noticed some little bug in Wordpress - it's changing "')" to a smiley even when it's written as a source code</p>
