Printed marginalia cite Philo of Alexandria’s De confusione linguarum as the source of this accoun

Printed marginalia cite Philo of Alexandria’s De confusione linguarum as the source of this account, but Philo’s allegorical interpretation of the confusion of tongues at Babel (Genesis 11) does not in fact offer any grounds for it. Even De sacrificiis Abelis et Caini, Philo’s treatise on the Cain and Abel narrative itself, does not include this addendum to the story of David’s annointing (I Samuel 16). De sacrificiis does not mention David. Vera y Mendoza is likely recalling, albeit imprecisely, the Liber antiquitatem biblicarum by Pseudo-Philo. This Jewish midrash of the first century A.D., a work assumed to be from Philo’s pen until the nineteenth century, includes an extrabiblical psalm which David, newly-annointed king, offers up to God. In this psalm, David mentions the preferred sacrifice of Abel and exults in the fact that he has been spared a similar fate at the hands of his brothers:
Tunc cepit David psallere psalmum hunc et dixit: A finibus terre incipiam glorificare, et a diebus seculi dicam ymnum.
There is, however, no indication that David ‘dixo el mismo Hymno a Dios que Abel’, as Vera y Mendoza would have it (E4v). For that notion, and for the claim that Abel rendered his pastoral offering poetically, one must assume that the panegirista has not only recalled his source indistinctly but has also conflated his sources. Herein lies an important clue.

Alejandro Corzo, an Italian, was swimming through the river they call Amor in Peru, near the port town of Paita, when an alligator came upon him, seized him by the arm, and forcefully dragged him beneath the water to swallow him up; in his agony he recalled Our Lady of Consolation and, as well as he could, he called upon her name under the water, and just at that point the beast released him and, thus freed, he emerged from the water, and promised to place a painted tablet depicting this wonder in the shrine of the Virgin, and he did so.
