Backini began in 2004 with the release of first album 'Threads'. The album was produced by Rob Quickenden using random old samples carefully nicked from charity shop records. This randomness led to a quirky, off-beat style with lots of humor and a slightly dark edge, especially when layered with fat beats, bass and synth sounds. Rob decided to form a band to perform his tunes live and started with guitarist Jeff Bruce-Hay (who had co-written a few tracks on 'Threads') and drummer Kristian Cockburn. The band has now developed in to a nine piece extravaganza.

Khoiba´s music is also like a river, with a beautiful melancholy, with many crooks, rapids with deep and shallow water, with riber beds of sand and stone. Ohio is a bitterweet song about a love crisis. About the good and the bad things of relationship. The hightrope walk between all or nothing. The desire of a new start, with the fear, that noting realy will changed. Beside the single version the miraculous I&I Remix is convincing over all. The relationship quarrel was translated into a musical duet between Khoiba singer Ema and the US singer Adam Sarmiento from the band IandI. The Remix was realized tover Myspace and will appeared beside the original version on a limited 7inch vinyl. MP3

For you to get into the right Melt! mood and continue dancing afterwards, we have compiled 18 hit songs from this year’s Melt! programme and pressed them onto CD. And out did not only come an accumulation of regular album tracks, but we put a little extra effort into talking some of the performing acts into providing us with some very special versions of their songs or previously unreleased tracks. Among them are non-album tracks from bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Editors, Zoot Woman, Hot Chip and many more. And of course the CD includes the TOP 20 Chart and Melt! hymn “3 Tage wach” by Lützenkirchen. CD

The Brixton Boys are back! Stereo MCs are all set to unleash their latest genre surfing opus, ‘Double Bubble’, onto an unsuspecting world this summer. Often labeled as one of the UK’s most iconic bands, and with Mercury nominations, Brit awards and million selling albums behind them, the Stereo MCs are here once again to prove that they’re as innovative and relevant as ever. The past two years have been spent DJing, soaking up the here and now of clubland, or holed up in their ‘Frontline Studio’ in the heart of Brixton, working on their latest pigeon-hole defying record. Always at the root of the band, Brixton is a fertile breeding ground that has been central to Stereo MCs development over the years and Double Bubble is no exception. A chance meeting in a Brixton pub between Rob and 19 year old local beat-meister Tic-Toc led to a burgeoning friendship and a prolifically creative musical collaboration that has infused Double Bubble’s fresh and vital approach.

Unquestionably a Stereo MCs record, it’s clear that this isn’t a band resting on the laurels of a successful past. Peppered with Rob’s lean lyrical vignettes, musically ‘Double Bubble’ is right on the money. The album’s first fruit ‘Gringo’ (recently unleashed as a peak-time club weapon) is already an online viral sensation thanks to it’s surreal virtual reality inspired video click here, whilst the electronic stomp of ‘The Here & Now’, the urban chronicles of ‘City Lights’, the darkly reflective ‘Pictures’ and epic ‘Black Gold’, clearly signal a band that is very comfortable in its own skin and uniquely Stereo MCs. CD

Evinde oluşturduğu “Scratchbeat Masters” adlı projeyle “Wax On The Melt” adlı ilk single’ını çıkartan DJ, 1988 senesinde Graham Massey ve Martin Price ile birlikte “808 State” adlı grubu oluşturdu.

808 State ile birlikte “Newbuild” adlı albüme imza atan A Guy Called Gerald, bu albüm sonrasında gruptan ayrılarak solo kariyerine yönelme kararı aldı. Evindeki stüdyosunda “Voodoo Ray” adlı parçayı oluşturan Gerald, bu parça sayesinde yavaş yavaş İngiltere’nin müzik camiasında adından bahsettirmeye başladı. İngiltere’deki ilk ‘acid house’ parçası olarak kabul edilen “Voodoo Ray”, 1989 senesinde İngiltere listelerinde yer almayı başardı.

808 State grubundayken hazırladığı parça “Pacific State”, grubun “Quadrastate” albümünü yayınlamasıyla listelerde hit olurken, A Guy Called Gerald bu parçanın kendisinden izinsiz olarak yayınladığını ifade etti. Durum, mahkemeye başvurulmadan halledildi.

1989 senesinde ilk albümü “Hot Lemonade”i Rham Records etiketiyle piyasaya süren A Guy Called Gerald, 1991 senesinde CBS/Sony ile işbirliğine girerek “Automanikk” adlı albüme imza attı. Bu albüm sonrasında kendi plak şirketi Juicebox Records’u oluşturan DJ, 1992 senesinde şu an bulunması çok zor olan “28 Gun Bad Boy” adlı 3. albümünü piyasaya sürdü. Bu albümlerde sound olarak jungle ve drum n’ bass tarzına deniyen sanatçı, 1995 senesinde ise “Black Street Technology” adlı albümle müzik tarihinin ilk gerçek drum n’ bass albümlerinden birine imza atmış oldu.

1997 senesinde New York’a yerleşen A Guy Called Gerald, 2000 senesinde !KY Records adlı bağımsız plak şirketinin etiketiyle “Essence” adlı albüme imza attı. Sanatçının dans müziğini denediği ilk albümü olan “Essence”te Lou Rhodes, David Simpson, Lady Miss Kier ve Wendy Page gibi isimler yer aldı.

2004 senesinde “Voodoo Ray” adlı parça ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ta yer alarak A Guy Called Gerald’ın bir kez daha gündeme gelmesini sağlarken, sanatçı 2005 Ocak ayında diğer albümlere nazaran daha sıcak bir sounda sahip olan “To All Things What They Need” adlı albümünü piyasaya sürdü.

En son 2006 senesinde “Proto Acid / The Berlin Sessions” adlı konser albümünü Alman bağımsız plak şirketi Laboratory Instinct etiketiyle yayınladı.

Tucked away in a dusty corner of the BBC News website is an article entitled "Lost tapes of the Dr Who composer". Now since I'm a fan of the early Dr Who series (having not watched with any regularity since Sylvester Macoy (Wikipedia Biography) wore the scarf) and am married to a musical genius, it seemed like a logical article for me to take an interest in. In it they explained how lost tapes had been found featuring tracks that sounded like contmporary dance music but were composed many decades ago.

The life of Delia Derbyshire (Wikipedia biography) and her work in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop is a fascinating read, and the music she created breathtaking especially when you consider the technology available at the time. Her original realisation of the Dr Who theme is so iconic that it has defined the theme music of the show to this day. She was a true pioneer of electronic music and yet her name is known to very few people, so may I suggest the following links about this amazing composer and musician:

I listen to so much new music every month but i just don't have time to sit and really think about most of it well enough to write proper reviews of them. So below are a couple of house and a couple of drum&bass new-ish albums i have listened to over the last month or so and my impressions of them.

Martin Solveig - C'est la vie

Release date: 12/06/08

Label: d:vision Italy

Genre: House, Electronica, eletro house

This is a really happy electronic house/pop album which makes for great day-time listening. I'm not sure if it is as good as the previous album Hedonist but there is definitely some potential for some great club-worthy remixes to be made (such as the remixes of 'I want you' which have just been released)

Standout Track: I want you/ One 23 Four

Rating: 3.5/5

Buy it

Various Artists - Sensation Amsterdam 2008

Release Date: 04/07/08

Label: Dance Tune (rough trade)

Genre: Electro house, progressive house, electronica, techno

Sensation (formally Sensation White) is a compilation based on the annual Sensation indoor dance party, which was held this year in Amsterdam. The two CDs are chock full of this summers house hits as well as a few electronic and techno numbers to bind them nicely together. Great compilation to have running from start to finish at a party.

Standout Tracks: CD1 - The three song combo from Angello & Ingrosso - "555"->Dirty South - "This Is The End"->Fedde Le Grand and Funkerman - "3 Minutes To Explain". Damn fine producing and mixing make this a combo you have to dance to. CD 2: Tocadisco - "Morumbi"

Rating: 3.5/5

Buy it

Blasta - Blastorama

Release Date: April 9 2008

Label: Respect Records (Russia)

Genre: Drum & Bass

Blasta is a producer and a DJ who has been lurking around the indie music scene in Saint-Petersburg for the last 10 years. Initially producing trance music he made the switch to drum & bass in 2001. Blastorama is his first solo drum&bass release and it is a great drum & bass album with a mixture of vocal, melodic and dance-floor ready drum & bass.

Standout Track: Reach You

Rating: 4/5

Pendulum - In Silico

Release Date: 12 May 2008

Label: Warner

Genre: Drum & Bass, Electronica, Electro-Rock

In Silico is the follow-up to the hugely successful Hold Your Colour.

Hold Your Colour was the album which lured me to dnb music so much like other fans i had high hopes for this album; and much like other fans i was somewhat disapointed. It is still a good album but its not strictly drum and bass anymore, and the tracks which can be labeled drum and bass are not really radically different in style or sound than stuff they released already.

Standout track: Granite (which is kind of sad since that had been released as a single ep long before the album was out - it still has hints of the Hold Your Colour Brilliance).

Rating: 2.5/5

In the days when electronic music was the province of dweeby men in white lab coats, pocket protectors and skinny ties, Delia Derbyshire was among the few woman twiddling knobs and slicing tape at the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop. This is so ancient it was even before the Beatles hit.

Among her many works were the electronics for the original Doctor Who Theme.

Derbyshire died in 2001, but a treasure trove of reel-to-reel tapes she recorded has just been discovered. There's a nice article on the BBC site called Lost tapes of the Dr Who composer with several sound clips of her work and some nice quotes from Orbital's Paul Hartnoll, who sampled the Doctor Who Theme on "Doctor? from The Altogether.

I've always found the Radiophonic materiel a little quaint and dated, even at the time, but their influence was profound for most British electronic musicians of a certain age.

Thanks to bpmf from the IDM list for the pointer.
