A funny thing happened last night. I was watching the latest episode of 90210 with hubby monster.

A funny thing happened last night. I was watching the latest episode of 90210 with hubby monster. He is not a fan, nor was he a fan of the original. Really not a fan. I think he might prefer dental surgery.

I, on the other hand, loveloveloved it, the original, not so much the spinspinspin off. It has its moments when it vaguely resembles a half way decent show. The episode that was on this week was one of those moments...even without any of the original characters.

I was a bit concerned this week because this was the first week without Kelly or Brenda but it was ok. And the very best line from my very favorite movie (which hubby monster happens to loathe as well) was in this episode...it is at the end of the clip but the clip is worth watchin because the grandma is a freak!

Man, I miss the eighties...

Now, I have a question...were you a Dylan-girl or a Brandon girl?

I really happen to like cheesy 80's movies! Ha ha ha - here I sit, a 29 year old geeky mother of two who has just realized her affinity for those made to boo at cheesy movies.

I like some of the more popular 80's movies too, like

Dirty Dancing

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Sixteen Candles

The Breakfast Club

Revenge of the Nerds

Beetlejuice

Heathers

A Christmas Story

Back to the Future

When I say "cheesy" 80's movies I mean gems such as

Beverly Hills Troopers

Can't Buy Me Love

Once Bitten

Mannequin (this particular one has become a lot harder to watch)

Flight of the Navigator

Secret to my Success

Children of the Corn

You know, the movies that really highlighted 80's hair or greed, or looked corny, or were just plain bad movies with a totally thin plot.

Making up this list has set me on a quest to eBay/Amazon. Damnit...

Two Blondes review a movie and ramble about themselves.
JESSICA SAYS:
Here is what I knew about this

Two Blondes review a movie and ramble about themselves.

JESSICA SAYS:
Here is what I knew about this movie going into it: It's based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. That's it. Sometimes that's a really nice way to go into a movie (or book for that matter) because it prevents the sentiment that my mother utters after every single movie when you ask her what she thought--"Well, it wasn't what I expected." I have read Fight Club, which is also by Palahniuk, but haven't read Choke. So, I expected it to be dark and twisty, with a little social commentary added in for good measure. To borrow from Mom, "It wasn't (totally) what I expected." It was dark and twisty, but I missed the social commentary. Side note: anytime I quote my mother, be sure to read it with a pretty strong Midwestern accent (specifically Saint Louis).

A quick plot summary--Sam Rockwell plays a recovering sex addict, Victor Mancini, who works at a colonial reenactment site. His mother, played by Angelica Houston, is a patient in a mental hospital who no longer recognizes her son. Victor begins to fall for his mother's doctor, played by Kelly MacDonald, as he sets out to find out who his father is.

Kudos to the casting director of this film. I don't think there is another actor out there that plays sleazy, but likeable as well as Sam Rockwell. I'm kind of in love with Anjelica Huston now. As I left the movie, it dawned on me that I don't think I've ever seen any of her movies before. I am in the process of adding her films to my Blockbuster queue right now. This film was filled with scenes that turned on long, silent close-ups of her face as she processed emotion and information. I was in awe. Plus, I got kind of mesmerized by her looks--she's attractive, but not in a traditional sense and I could never quite put my finger on what made her striking. It's like the individual parts are kind of odd, but the sum of the parts works. Last but not least, I was so pleased to see Joel Grey, star of Broadway and father of Baby Houseman (a.k.a. Jennifer Grey--"Dirty Dancing"). He's such an odd little man and he worked that beautifully as one of the recovering sex addicts in therapy with Victor.

Have you ever seen a movie and thought, I bet this is a really good book? That's how I felt with "Choke." That's not to say I didn't think the movie was good; I did. I just felt like the book probably said things the movie didn't even attempt to (the missing social commentary I referenced at the beginning of this). I laughed out loud several times, which is how I judge how funny something is. Even better, it was pretty moving, too.

Just a warning: I was unprepared for how much sex there was in this movie. After reading this, you will already be aware it's about a sex addict. I was not. All the sex scenes felt appropriate and were relevant to the plot, just...you know...this isn't one for the kids.

This is worth seeing for the full Friday night price. Just don't see it with anyone whom you might be uncomfortable watching people do the 'around the world.'

ALISON SAYS:

Who knew broken, depressed sex addicts could be so funny? I sure didn't until I saw this movie. I have never read any of Chuck Palahniuk's books, though after reading some of his info on Wikipedia, I've just added some of his work to my library account (yes, I have a library card and actually use it). Here's a few choice pieces:

When Palahniuk "attempted to publish his next novel, Invisible Monsters, publishers rejected it for being too disturbing. This led him to work on his most famous novel, Fight Club, which he wrote as an attempt to disturb the publisher even more for rejecting him."

"Palahniuk would also become a member of the rebellious Cacophony Society* in his adulthood. He is a regular participant in their events, including the annual Santa Rampage (a public Christmas party involving pranks and drunkenness) in Portland. His participation in the Society inspired some of the events in his writings, both fictional and non-fictional. Most notably, he used the Cacophony Society as the basis for Project Mayhem in Fight Club."

"Choke" is the latest film adaptation of Palahniuk's work, and it's definitely worth seeing. It has a stellar cast, all talented and all funny. There's a depressing realism to the misery that is their lives, but you still love being along for the ride and keep hoping they'll find some semblance of happiness. Sam Rockwell dazzles as a guy you sort of want to hate, but can't help being charmed by. I can't believe I just wrote "dazzles." Brad William Henke masterfully portrays the sweetest, most cuddly chronic masturbator you'll ever meet. Clark Gregg should be proud of himself for his directorial debut with this film, not to mention his hilarious performance as Lord High Charlie and the fact that he wrote the screenplay.

LA Viewers: Worth paying full price at The Grove or Sunset 5.

Translation for non-LA natives: It is worth paying money to see this movie in the theaters. It will make you laugh and you get to see boobs (if you’re into that).

Sidenote: This is not the movie to bring your small children or your mom to. Or to bring anyone who might be weirded out by somewhat explicit sex scenes.
*Jessica has no idea what the Cacophony Society actually does, but you had her at "pranks and drunkenness."

I’m off of work today, and I’ve spent a large part of it working on the baby blanket I

I'm off of work today, and I've spent a large part of it working on the baby blanket I'm knitting. I like to have something on the TV when I'm knitting, so that I don't get completely bored during the repetitive parts of the pattern. So I was flipping channels and came across Dirty Dancing. Dirty Dancing!!! I love this movie so much, it doesn't even make sense. It's one of those movies, like The Cutting Edge and The Princess Bride, that I will watch whenever I come across it, no matter how far in the movie is. Patrick Swayze was amazing in this movie. I mean, I have to give Jennifer Grey her due, too, because her baby is so moving, but this was all about Swayze. He's tender, hot, tough, and pretty much the reason that good girls go after the bad guys. We're looking for Johnny Castle.

This movie is so amazing. It seems like a bit of fluff, but if you stop to think about it, Dirty Dancing tackles issues such as class and gender issues, generational changes, AND has a kickass soundtrack. I actually stopped knitting a bunch of times to sigh, smile, squee, and then get up and dance my butt off. SO GOOD. Here's what I've been working on today:

Kutsher's Resort. (Kate Glicksberg)

"It's the kind of place homeless Jews come to get bar mitzvahed," joked the comedian Joe Derosa, referring to Kutsher's, the run-down Catskill Mountain resort in Monticello, N.Y., that has clearly seen better days. Still, its storied history never included anything quite like All Tomorrow's Parties, a large, experimental U.K. music festival held here last weekend and bringing roughly 3,000 of the indiest of indie rock kids to the borscht belt complex.

Helen Kutsher. (Kate Glicksberg)

"It makes me very happy having all these young people here," said Helen Kutsher, the hotel’s matriarch. Kutsher’s, once a regular stop for borscht belt royalty like Jackie Mason, Joan Rivers, Alan King and Shecky Green as well as contemporary (sorta) comedians like Billy Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld and … er … Yakov Smirnov, has been in business since 1907 and is the last remaining family-run resort in the Catskills.

Between the 1930s and the 1970s, the hotel and its neighboring resorts provided New Yorkers, most often Jewish immigrants and their upwardly mobile offspring, an affordable respite -- much like the setting of 1987's kitsch classic "Dirty Dancing," for which Kutsher's was supposedly an inspiration (prompting festival goers to repeat ad infinitum Patrick Swayze's classic line, "Nobody puts baby in a corner!"). In less than two hours by car, urbanites could have a cheap all-inclusive vacation to the "Jewish Alps," complete with top-shelf entertainment.

All Tomorrow's Parties continues in the same tradition -- if the entertainers had been avant-garde-leaning cacophonous rock musicians. Amplified noise in all its permutations was the order of the day with Irish shoe gazers My Bloody Valentine headlining the wondrous Stardust Ballroom with a sonically assaultive set. Other highlights of the three-day festival included the warm and trippy Spectrum (with Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember of Spacemen 3), the fierce riot-inducing duo Lightning Bolt and the sonorous techno-inflected sounds of Germany's Harmonia (featuring members Neu! and Cluster). Thankfully an old-school hip-hop set by E.P.M.D. offered both nostalgia — of a different sort than a set by Shecky Green — and a welcome relief from the aural maelstrom.

While Mrs. Kutsher enjoyed the festivities, she was a bit taken aback by the casual dress code of the attendants -- distressed T-shirts, flip-flops, shorts. "It used to be people would dress up here," she explained. "It would be 150 degrees outside and you would see women in fur coats and the men wearing hats -- none of this short pants."

But perhaps it is this informal younger generation who can best help restore the dilapidated borscht belt to its former grandeur. These once-glorious resorts likely weren’t on the list of must-see places for any of the young attendees, yet the culture collision felt oddly right (though basic amenities like edible food, for example, would have been nice). To wit, All Tomorrow's Parties has already booked Kutsher's for 2009.

I hate going to the grocery store but I did it for the week so it is done.

Mountain Lake is empty and it looks ugly! This was the lake at Kellerman's in Dirty Dancing (love it or hate it, not the point here).

I am already sick of all of the political perfectness being shoved down our throats and it isn't any where near being over.

I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next girl but honestly some people should just not open their mouths!

That ought to be enough for now...Tune in next Tuesday.

Calma, a gente explica.

Not for the first time, I have failed to write my Friday round-up for a couple of weeks, due to a combination of lack of time and lack of news...

It's still been a little quiet on the musical theatre news front, but there's just about enough to sustain a post, so here I am... For those of you who are slightly more observant, you might notice me slip in a couple of things that didn't strictly happen in the last week. Enjoy...

A Little Night Music has been confirmed as the Christmas musical this year at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The show is directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, and casting will follow in due course. In the meantime, tickets are already on sale via the Menier's website, where you can also find full details and publicity image for the show.

Lee Mead is already been tipped for a follow-up role in another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical after he hangs up his multi-coloured coat. According to WOS, he is going to heading up the cast or a new production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Rather improbably, the production will apparently be directed by Marianne Elliott, a well-known director but with no previous musical theatre experience

Dirty Dancing is getting a new cast member, and rather unusually, he comes from the Royal Ballet. According to The Stage, Martin Harvey will be taking on the leading role, and will be joined by Leanne Rowe as 'Baby'

Imagine This started its press campaign, inviting journalists to meet the cast and creative team, and hear a few of the show's songs. What's On Stage reports events here, and the Official London Theatre site focuses on Director Timothy Sheader's nerves about the project. I doubt he's the only person to be worried, as it's certainly an ambitious show - check out The Stage newsblog for another point of view

Gethin Jones in rumoured to have been lined up to replace Lee Mead when his time in Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat comes to an end early next year. According to WOS, the former Blue Peter presenter and star of Strictly Come Dancing will make his theatre debut in the show.

Come Dancing, a new musical written by former Kinks frontman Ray Davies, opened this week at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. Thankfully it's actually an original musical, rather than another jukebox show, as noted by the show's reviews

Never Forget's producers have managed to get themselves into a pay row with the cast of the show... The Stage reports that they have asked the cast to take significant pay cuts when the show moves from the Savoy Theatre to the smaller Lyric Theatre later in the year. Unsurprisingly, not everyone is particularly happy with their attempts. You can also see a response on The Stage's newsblog here

Charles Strouse has told The Stage that producers are in talks to bring a new production of his most famous show, Annie, to the West End. It's currently playing at the Cheltenham Everyman Theatre, but he hopes it won't end there

Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the latest film-cum-musical, has announced its leading cast members. What's On Stage announces that the show will mark a return to the West End stage for Jason Donovan, and this is confirmed by the show's official website

Eurobeat The Musical opened at the Novello Theatre to mixed reviews... Nicholas de Jongh of the Evening Standard hated it, but Charles Spencer of the Daily Telegraph loved it. You can make up your own minds by booking tickets via the show's official website

Sonia sat frozen in her seat, not registering what had just happened. She felt as though she was in a dream, everything around her very surreal. She looked at the two tickets on her dashboard, knowing she wasn’t going to make it to the airport. Sonia got out of the car.

“Hello! Are you okay? I’m sorry. I didn’t see you. Your lights…are you okay?” She went over to the driver’s side and knocked on the window. There was no response. She looked around. The unlit road spread like a black desert patiently awaiting its victims. Sonia kicked off her shoes, cursing the fact that they weren’t a comfortable pair of flats.

Oh God! How could this be happening to me?

She tried opening the car door, but it wouldn’t budge.

[caption id="attachment_55" align="alignright" width="219" caption="Be my Sonia Baby"][/caption]

Well, I guess these will be good for something other than backache.

She bashed at the window with her stilettos, and by the fifth attempt, it shattered. Sonia opened the door and while she couldn’t see much of the driver’s face, he must have had a better view than she did.

“Sonia.”

She stood still, hot with panic.

Who can it be?

“Do I know you?”

“I hope so.”

“How do you know me? My name?”

“ I’d know you anywhere my Sonia Baby.”

Sonia stood still, shocked. She knew that voice. It was the voice she heard when she was making love , when she was fucking, even though it was never her fiancee’s voice. The way he touched her, kissed her, made her ache, and burn, made her come. Something she could never forget. He became her dream- lover. Even though he once was her only lover.

.

Michael .It couldn’t be.

“But, but you’re missing.”

“Well, only certain parts of me if the ambulance doesn’t get here. I’m kidding. It’s just a few bruises.”

“How do you know? You can’t just self-diagnose like that. You must go to the hospital.” She stopped, annoyed, confused and shocked all at once.

“Well, are you going to stand in the cold or climb in?”

She realized how silly she might look standing with her hands on her hips, barefooted and reprimanding the person she just smashed into. Reluctantly she got into the passenger seat.

“So aren’t you going to tell me what happened?” Sonia glared at him, still not believing her eyes.

‘Well actually, you just smashed into me…Okay, okay. But we shouldn’t be having this conversation here-”

“Excuse me! I guess this might not be the perfect set-up for you to tell me why you screwed up my life!”

“Sonia, are you still hung up on that? I explained it to you.”

“Hung up? You ran out on me a week before we were going to swear our undying love at the altar!”

“But I don’t get why you’re still angry. In my e-mails …”

“E-mails? Oh no! You’re not going to get away with telling me you’ve been e-mailing me for three years! Sounds like a damn soap opera. ”

“I did. I’m guessing you never got any. Just like you never got the messages I left for you when I could somehow never reach you.”

“Whom did you leave these supposed messages with? Oh you’re going to tell me it was…what did you call him, my control freak dad that intercepted it?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“You’re right, it doesn’t’. You could have tried harder.”

“Perhaps you’re right. But it’s not easy breaking into jail.”

Michael looked down.

“Wow! That rock on your finger really sparkles.”

Sonia tried hiding her hand in the dark, as though she was wearing an embarrassing secret instead of a diamond ring.

“I’m sorry, love I didn’t mean to…It’s really pretty.”

“Quit stalling. Spit it out! What was her name, or their names? I mean it has been three years, I’m sure you’ve done the rounds.”

“Yeah. Okay, okay. I didn’t want to mess up your life. I had nothing to give you. And sure, maybe it wasn’t important in the beginning but, well, you know your family, Sonia Baby-”

“Stop calling me that! And so what? So my family’s rich. It didn’t matter! God! It really is like a soap opera!”

“I know. I just…it’s that stupid male pride thing. And your dad spoke some sense into me. Said I should give it a couple of years if I really wanted you. ‘If you think you deserve my Sonia’. Maybe he was right. ”

“What? He did what?” Sonia could feel the red heat ballooning inside her.

Dad? Does everybody have a say in my life except me? I wish he’d just leave me alone and let me live my life! Always, always telling me what to do.

“It doesn’t matter now. I wanted you to be proud of me.”

“I was.”

“I know. I know that now. Realization always comes to late, baby. I know you were broken up. But when I was getting on my feet ready to support you, I came back for you, now.” He took her hand, and she yanked it away from him. It was still there, as always, in the simplest touch. Just by touching her Michael could make her feel what no man since or before could.

Still the same, stupid girl, you might as well be fucking each other right now.

“What is this? Wuthering Heights? I don’t want to hear anymore.”

Sonia stormed out of the car, still barefoot, forgetting about the glass on the road.
”Ouch! Damn It!”

Michael jumped out of his car and ran over to her, trying to help her lean against him. Sonia struggled with him, trying to fight off the tears, to no avail.

“You always were clumsy. Does it hurt a lot?” He said softly, helping her to her car.

“Of course it hurts. ” She didn’t want to look at him, fearing they both knew she wasn’t talking about her injured foot.

“Do you love him?” It was the inevitable question she prayed he wouldn’t ask.

“Does that matter? It never made a difference before.”

“It made a difference to us.”

“Oh? Was that why you left? Cos you loved me?” She said sarcastically.

“As hard as it is to believe, yes Sonia. It was because I love you and want the best for you. The best I can be. I know I went about it all wrong, and insensitively, but if you knew the truth…”

“What truth? ”

“I don’t want you to hate your Dad.”

“Michael, tell me now. I think you owe me that much.”

Michael took a deep breath, and Sonia knew whatever he was about to say would change her in some way.

“Your Dad kept trying to get me to break up with you, and when it didn’t work, he came to me all smiles that week before our wedding, and…”

“What did he do Michael?”

Michael sighed resignedly.

“He said he would cut you out of his will and make sure I don’t ever get work in industry again. I’m sorry Sonia.”

My god,Dad!

She willed herself to calm down. “He said Steven would be good for me. Of course he did, Steven works for him. My fiancee belongs to him, just as this car does.”

“Nice car.” Michael laughed half-heartedly. “You don’t love him, not like you love…”

“First my Dad, now you! You know what, this isn’t a damn movie. Things matter. What you did mattered.” Sonia looked at Michael sternly. “Where are the damn cops anyway?”

“Well, I don’t think you can have them arrest me for being an idiot.”

Sonia was about to protest but she knew he was smiling, and she couldn’t help but laugh.

“If nothing else, I can still make you laugh.”

Sonia tried her best not to throttle him.

“Yes Michael, you could do a lot of things, you could just never stay.”
”That’s fair. Can I ask you something? Are you cross with me cos I left or cos I came back? You know you’re making the biggest mistake…I won’t hurt you and I will never leave you again. No matter what…I want you Sonia. I’ve always wanted only you.”

“This is ridiculous!”

“This wasn’t an accident. I know you wouldn’t want to see me if I just pitched up, so I-”

“So you smashed into me? Oh my God, Michael!”

“Actually as I recall it you were the one who smashed into me.”

Sonia slapped him across the face.

“It would have helped if you had your damn lights switched on so I could see you!”

“This is just absurd. I feel like I’m stuck in one of those bad romance novels.”

They stared at each other for moment, Sonia’s eyes brimming with tears. Michael reached over to her and pulled her close.

“Michael, how can you do this?”

“Well, I didn’t know you liked your car that much.”

Despite herself, Sonia laughed through her tears. The dark road ahead looked a little smudged. Michael was the only person who ever left her feeling confused. And now all the feelings she thought she’d buried six foot under were rushing up to flood her.

Frustrated and angry, she lifted her handbag and proceeded to hit him several times on the head, until she slumped in her seat, spent.

“Happy now?” Michael looked at her. “ You know we’re right.”

And just as in the ridiculous books she used to read, and like she’d secretly dreamed all these years, Michael took her in his arms and covered her lips with his. She felt his hot breath against her neck, not listenting to what he was whispering, just losing herself in the memory of what it felt like being with him.

God, he feels so good, so right.

Sonia tugged at his jeans zipper, feeling the growing bulge in his pants. Michael ripped open her blouse, feverishly kissing her breasts and pushed up her silky skirt, pulling off her g-string. She felt her pussy getting wet as his hand rubbed against her, fingers moving in and out of her. He pushed her hand aside, and got rid of his jeans, and with one hand, lifted her on top of him, her pussy sliding over his thick hard cock.

“Oh fuck Michael, your cock feels so….”

“Yeah, Baby, I also forgot just how good it feels being inside you. Fucking you. Making love.”

Their embrace was interrupted by muffled sounds of Sonia’s cell. She broke from Michael and reached to bottom of her back.

“Some things never change.”

Sonia didn’t hear him. She was staring at the caller ID.

“It’s him isn’t it?”

“Hi Steven. Oh, it’s okay. I’ll…I gotta go. Bad signal.”

She ended the call and got dressed.

“Why didn’t you tell him about the accident?”

“He’s on his way here. We’re going to travel for a few weeks, with all the stress of wedding talk, well-”

Michael picked up the tickets.

“New York? His choice?”

“There’s nothing wrong with New York.”

“No, but the Sonia I remember had a passion for places with history and soul. We were going to see Peru, Macchu Picchu together.”

“Things change.”

“Do they? “ Michael played with a strand of hair glued to Sonia's face. “I know it’s unfair, but I couldn’t do this sooner.”

They stared at each other, Sonia feeling as though Michael had never left.

They heard the distant sound of a car approaching.

“Steven.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to New York.”

                                                                   *************************

Sonia looked around as she waited in the check in queue at JFK Airport, glad to be cushioned from the New York smog.

We’re going to be late!

“Passport and Tickets please, ma’am.”

“Er, I’m just waiting-“

“Honey, sorry, traffic was a bitch!” He kissed her on the cheek, and handed her his passport.

“I suddenly feel the need to use the loo. Didn’t you say you also want to? I forget how to lock those things.”

Sonia smiled wickedly at Michael seated next to her, got up and walked down the aisle to the toilet. Michael waited until she closed the door behind her, before he got up and followed her.

Do you remember Dirty Dancing??? How you couldn't! ;-)
The Mountain like, that you have probably seen in the movie, it's today the location of a thriller. Timmy Dalton, an excursionist, searching soda's bottles to collect, has found human rests, a pair of shoes and some old personal objects like a belt, a portfolio, a coin dated 1910 and a gold ring with the initials MC and CA probably dated 1904.
It's a true enigma for the detectives. They just know one thing: this man or woman probably died thirty or fourty years ago. They haven't found any report about missing people in that period so they are searching signs in old newspapers.
It's really like a movie!

Remember that beautiful lake in the movie Dirty Dancing? The lush green of the mountain and the dar

Remember that beautiful lake in the movie Dirty Dancing? The lush green of the mountain and the dark blue of the lake were very relaxing. The lake is gone now. It sounds impossible but it is, and no it's not global warming. Apparently scientists believe that the lake naturally drains and disappears. Historical records seem to back this up too. The Roanoke Times article, with an excerpt shown below, explains in more detail.

Mountain Lake may be the only known lake in the world to periodically disappear, sometimes for decades. This phenomenon has been recorded since the 18th century and may be related to earthquakes.

The first reference to what is now called Mountain Lake dates to 1751, when British surveyor Christopher Gist explored Giles County and West Virginia for the Ohio Company. In his journals, Gist describes climbing a mountain and finding a clear-water lake, a gravel shore and "fine meadow." By 1768, however, settlers said such a lake was nowhere to be found in what is now Giles County. Instead, they used the site as a salt lick for cattle, hence the name Salt Pond Mountain.

Photographer Richard Cobb shows the dramatic change in photographs.

Mountain Lake Before and After

With the drop in water previously lost items are being found, including a body. It is believed to be a man from the 1930's. The Roanoke Times describes the personal effects found with the bones.

He wore a belt with a silver buckle and carried a fancy silver cigarette box, both engraved with elaborate cursive initials that appear to be "SCF."

His old McCreery wingtip shoes had Sullivan's Safety Cushion heels held in place with six nails.

His gold class ring carried the initials "MC" on one side and "CA" on the other, above images of trees carved into the metal. It bore a date on top that appears to signify that it is from the Class of '04 -- most likely 1904, Giles County sheriff's investigators say.

[gallery]

Hopefully someone will recognize the class ring, cigarette box. Maybe someone will remember something from half a century ago when the stone hotel was new. Perhaps this mystery will help bring tourists to the wonderful Mountain Lake Hotel that is now by a lovely grassy meadow.

Last weekend, I saw Douglas Coupland at the movie theatre. This weekend, I:

watched back-to-back movies with my housemates (Everything is Illuminated & Punch Drunk Love). I enjoyed them both.

played Ultimate in the rain. I have found that the solution to my hatred of being in the rain is to wear a hat with a brim. This keeps my face dry, and so long as I am having fun, I can endure without whining.

read The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland. It takes place at Staples in North Van. I've driven by there but never gone in. I liked this book, although my roommate and I had slightly different interpretations on what I'd consider a pivotal moment in Glove Pond, the book within the book...

watched Dirty Dancing. For the tenth time or so. It is a bit dirty. But the dancing! Oh, the dancing...Patrick Swayze, can't you stay young forever?

Je les crois. Oké d'abord. Faqueuh... T'as mieux ? Montre-moi...

Então, me diga: o que tu costuma ouvir?

Mas tô numa fase de ir atrás de influências, tô procurando conhecer a fundo o funk (James Brown, The Meters, Sly And The Family Stone) e a música negra, hip hop, r&b, africa funk e etc.

Eu tava ouvindo Marvin Gaye ontem!
– É demais (...) E Barry White então?

Ben E. King
– Muita coisa boa. Ai tipo, você pega de onde vem muita coisa de agora.

Tudo a ver.

'I've Had TheTime Of My Life', Dirty Dancing

'I Don't Feel Like Dance', Scissor Sisters

+++

Medo.

Dirty Dancing is, hands down, one of my favorite movies EVER. I was heartbroken when I first heard that Patrick was diagnosed with cancer...in fact, I was almost as sad as when I found out that Baby got her nose done. What was she thinking?? That nose was staple! Anyway...I believe the reason Patrick has survived his cancer this long is because of the movie Dirty Dancing. Did you see what kind of shape that man was in? Holy Hell! I should have become a dancer. Anyway...it never fails that every time the scene where Baby confronts her Dad comes on, I cry. I know that it's not even that sad...but for some reason it gets me every time!

Anyway...back to dancing...in my next life I want to be a good dancer. I was tortured at high school dances...trying my hardest to bounce around to the music--hoping that the person next to me grabbed more attention than I did. I think the higher being in this world owes it to me to grace me with balance and rhythm the next time around...

The police minister in Australia's most populous state was forced to quit over reports he "dirty danced" in underwear over the chest of a female colleague in a drunken late-night office party. Matt Brown resigned just three days after being sworn in as police minister of New South Wales state, which includes Sydney.

"I'm a human being and I made a mistake and I am going to cop the consequences," Brown told reporters. "I am not wanting to duck or weave this issue. As you can imagine this is a pretty tough day for me."

Witnesses said Brown stripped down to his underpants and danced to loud techno music on a green leather Chesterfield lounge before he "mounted the chest" of a female politician and simulated a sex act.

"Embarrassed doesn't begin to describe it. He conceded he'd been in his underwear and that gave me no option but to demand his resignation," State Premier Nathan Rees said.

I think it's pretty funny and probably would vote for the dude. But, let's face it - dirty dancing at an office party ain't a sign of understanding your role in public office.

Hungry eyes can be treated with prescription drops applied twice daily on an empty stomach.

Examine, if you will, this headline from CNN.com: “‘Hungry Eyes’ Singer Charged with DUI.” That would be Eric Carmen. The song was featured in Dirty Dancing, and topped out at #4 on the Hot 100 in 19hundredand88.

Evil’s not going to bother with a link to the video feed because, frankly, such an event doesn’t rate reading about beyond the headline. (Please don’t let it rate—please don’t let there be a dead hooker in the trunk. Evil can’t handle another celebrity murder trial.)

If it doesn’t rate a link, you ask, why even mention it? Because it caused the Evil to take a break from his Ph.D. thesis—analyzing Dirty Dancing’s impact on society along Hegelian lines—and ponder an aspect of celebrity we don’t often consider: that the end is never quite the end, even when it should be.

Sure, Eric Carmen has to enjoy the four or five moments a year when someone recognizes him and freaks out. OK, that probably doesn’t happen . . . but at least maybe asks for an autograph, or tells him her first dance at her wedding was to “Hungry Eyes” . . . or looks into his shopping cart and says, “If you like Funyuns that much, you should really try the new Sour Cream N’ Funyun flavor!” . . . whatever. Has to make him feel good. And that’s probably as far as his residual celebrity gets him these days, but hey, Evil’s not knocking anyone’s random self-esteem booster shots.

On the other hand, even the slightest screw-up—from even the most minor, forgotten celebrity—apparently rates a CNN headline. Think about it: Mr. Carmen probably had a few too many, decided he could make it home . . . and when he saw the flashing lights in the mirror, he hung his head and thought, “Well, at least Mother won’t hear about it. Thank God this didn’t happen 20 years ago . . .”

Wrong!

And that’s the tradeoff, it seems: years after your celebrity has been leeched of its ability to benefit you (we doubt Mr. Carmen’s strutting into any exclusive restaurant and getting a table, sans reservation) it can still reach up from the grave and drag you into the mud. Britney Spears is a national disgrace, but Evil doubts she flies coach in the cramped airplane of life. But for the others, the Eric Carmens . . . put it this way: he’s famous enough to have a Wikipedia page, but not for the page’s author to have looked up and posted a picture of him . . .

Is it worth it?

Whatever you decide, here’s hoping this DUI and the embarrassing resurrection of his name will help Mr. Carmen resurrect his musical career. It’s about time for that Dirty Dancing remake, right?

Enjoy the weekend. If possible, put Baby in a corner.

First Jonathan Papelbon taught me how to play craps now, he's taught me how to love. Papelbon's mom, who clearly has an awesome sense of humor sent these embarassing videos to the Red Sox and Comcast Sportsnet from Papelbon's high school years. In them Papelbon and a friend are dressed in drag and dancing and then later, Papelbon and friend recreate the final scene from Dirty Dancing which Paps as the Swayze. The reaction around the Red Sox clubhouse as they watch the video is pretty hilarious, especially when Papelbon and the guy get close enough for a near kiss. The best part for me though is David Ortiz both introducing the video and then interviewing Papelbon afterwards, the Large Father is a pretty funny dude.

Ok, so I just did a blog on Nim’s Island and I was talking about how it totally would be cool

Ok, so I just did a blog on Nim's Island and I was talking about how it totally would be cool to do a blog about my favorite movies as a child. Now, these aren't necessarily going to be "kids" movies per say. These are just going to be the movies I watched over and over again growing up. It'll probably be a long list, but... I'll try not to bore you! In no particular order....

A). Labyrinth (1986) - Directed by Jim Henson - The plot revolves around Sarah's quest to rescue her little brother from the Goblin King while trapped in a world that is an enormous otherworldly maze. Most of the other significant roles are played by puppets or by a combination of puppetry and human performance. Wikipedia

Ok now seriously, who doesn't love this movie? The music was incredible, everyone wanted The Goblin King and Sarah to hook up, and um... did you happen to see it has puppets?? ~lol~ I wanted to be Sarah, I wanted to be in a labyrinth and have friends like Ludo. I'm pretty sure I've even threatened to send people to the bog of eternal stench in the past 5 years or so... ( yes I'm a nerd ) Fantastic movie, a must see. Show it to your kids, keep it alive! ~lol~ Still own this and will watch it again.

B) The Goonies (1985) - Directed by Richard Donner - A band of kids from the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, hoping to save their homes from demolition, go on an adventure to find the buried treasure of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th century pirate. Wikipedia

This movie had many characters involved and managed to get you sucked into every single one of them. I really cared about the Goonies. I wanted to be a Goonie! I loved the traps, I sincerely hated the bad guys, and who didn't love the heart warming relationship between Chunk and Sloth? Every time I see this on TV I think I watch it, no matter what part it's at. Definitely a classic.

C) Revenge Of The Nerds (1984) - Directed by Jeff Kanew - It chronicles the story of a group of nerds trying to stop harassment by the persecuting jock fraternity, the Alpha Betas. Wikipedia

Some might consider this a little bit too adult of a movie for a kid to watch given the sex scenes, tits, various implications to sex, and so forth. However, this is a great movie and I loved the hell out of it growing up. It was hilarious, the music was awesome, and it did have a cool message if you really wanted to dig beneath the fun. It's ok to be a nerd!

D) The Legend Of Billie Jean ( 1985) - Directed by Matthew Robbins. It is a retelling of The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas, with Kohlhaas' wounded horses replaced by a damaged motorcycle. Wikipedia

Kind of a lame description, doesn't say much. If you've seen this movie you know what it's about. The youth trying to stick up for themselves! What's Fair is Fair! ~lol~ Great music, loved the messages I got from this movie. I mean, there was a water slide on the house and the kids were on the run wild and free. Billie Jean was like a hero ... ahhh memories.

E) Grease/Grease 2 (1978/1982) - Grease 1 was directed by Randal Kleiser and based on Jim Jacobs' and Warren Casey's musical, Grease. The film stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John. Wikipedia

Grease 2 was sequel to the 1978 smash hit Grease. The movie was strongly criticized by many as derivative of the original, and the film did poorly at the box office. In recent years, it has attained a cult following. Wikipedia

I could go on and on about these movies forever. They are definitely a part of my world and I am just as in love with them now as I was as a kid. Music, again was awesome in both. I know all the words to them all and I know all the scenes off by heart. If I see anything or hear anything to do with either film I automatically start to smile. I know many who hate these movies and think they are lame, but they are fun and hilarious and silly and that's what makes them great!

F) Santa Claus (1985) - Santa Claus: The Movie is a straightforward, nondenominational attempt to explore the mysteries of Santa Claus with the key objective being to answer some of the basic questions many children have about the Santa Claus mythos, such as how Santa's reindeer fly, how he and his wife made it to the North Pole and how Santa ascends chimneys, among other things. Wikipedia

Every Christmas I watch this movie, and it is still just as wonderful each and every time. Dudley Moore was fantastic in this film, and it really made you love Santa. The way it is filmed makes me feel cozy and I loved the story going on with the little boy.

G) The Last Unicorn (1982) - A fantasy film, based on the novel written by Peter S. Beagle, and adapted by him for the screenplay. The film is an animated movie produced by Rankin/Bass for ITC Entertainment and animated by Topcraft. The film is noted as "one of the most emotionally frank, sophisticated and mature G-rated cartoons ever made. Wikipedia

Unicorns, the Magician, the Red Bull and how beautiful the music was makes this film a forever favorite. It is a sad yet poetic, bitter yet sweet story and I think this a great movie for kids and adults. Unicorns are such mystical creatures and I remember watching them coming out of the ocean at the end was like WOW! Awesome movie.

H) Dirty Dancing (1987) - A romance film credited as being one of the most watched films of all time. The story details the moment of time that a teenaged girl crosses over into womanhood both physically and emotionally, through a relationship with a dance instructor during a family summer vacation. Wikipedia

Fantastic love story, great tunes, a hot patrick swayze... ahh... what a great movie. It's a beautiful story about how different people can be and how relationships affect us in different ways. I wanted to
