Addict: 1529, adj., "delivered, devoted," from Latin addictus, pp. of addicere "deliver, yield, devote," Slaves were given to Roman soldiers to reward them for performance in battle. Eventually, a person who was a slave to anything became known as an addict. In modern English the word's first reference is attested to 1906, in reference to opium (there is an isolated instance from 1779, referring to tobacco).

Avocado: 1763, from "awa guatl," a South American Indigenous word for testicle. The Spanish took this term and used to to refer to what we now call the avocado.

Bead: 1377, originally meant "prayer," acquiring its modern sense through prayer counting with beads.

Bless: xx, finds its origin in the word "blood." Bless was originally a derivative meaning, to a certain extent, "to mark with blood."

Cell (biological): 1845, originally meant a monk's living space. It was Robert Hooke, who invented the first microscope. His first specimen was a piece of cork, which was made up of many small rectangular sub-parts. To him, the small rectangles were like the small room monks lived in, known as cells. Thus, he called these microscopic building blocks "cells".

Ketchup: 1711, from Malay kichap, from Chinese (Amoy dial.) koechiap "brine of fish." Catsup (earlier catchup) is a failed attempt at Anglicization, still in use in U.S. Originally a fish sauce, early English recipes included among their ingredients mushrooms, walnuts, cucumbers, and oysters. Modern form of the sauce began to emerge when U.S. seamen added tomatoes.

Nice: Circa 1290, "foolish, stupid, senseless," from Old French nice "silly, foolish," from Latin nescius "ignorant," literally, "not-knowing." "The sense development has been extraordinary, even for an adjective" [Weekley] -- from "timid" (pre-1300); to "dainty, delicate" (c.1405); to "precise, careful" (1500s, preserved in such terms as a nice distinction and nice and early); to "agreeable, delightful" (1769); to "kind, thoughtful" (1830). In 16c.-17c. it is often difficult to determine exactly what is meant when a writer uses this word. By 1926, it was pronounced "too great a favorite with the ladies, who have charmed out of it all its individuality and converted it into a mere diffuser of vague and mild agreeableness."

Sinister: 1411, "prompted by malice or ill-will," from O.Fr. sinistre "contrary, unfavorable, to the left," from L. sinister "left, on the left side" (opposite of dexter). The L. word was used in augury in the sense of "unlucky, unfavorable" (omens, especially bird flights, seen on the left hand were regarded as portending misfortune), and thus sinister acquired a sense of "harmful, unfavorable, adverse." This was from Gk. influence, reflecting the early Gk. practice of facing north when observing omens; in genuine Roman auspices, the left was favorable.

Tennis: 1345. "Tennis," a sport originally developed in France, was originally "tenez" (pronounced tuh-nay) which is the French verb "tenir" conjugated at the second person of the plural as a polite imperative verb (translated in this case by something like "there you go"). They were saying "tenez" when they hit the ball so as to politely say :"there, try to get this one". But, around the same time, tennis lost popularity in France and gained popularity in England. So, English people were still using the word "tenez" each time they hit the ball, but English accents, thus creating a more Anglicized spelling. The sport latter garnered worldwide popularity and got picked up by many languages, including French.

Victim: 1497, from the Latin "victima," meaning, "a living creature offered as a sacrifice."

Dorset, UK (Strutts News Services) - British scientists on an after-hours bender decided that the world needs to know if octopi are ambidextrous or prefer one tentacle over the rest.  The problem was to decide on a procedure.

"If they're so bloody smart, LET'S GIVE THE SLIMY BASTARDS RUBIK'S CUBES!" blurted one, and after another round of scrumpy, the panel agreed.

Once they recovered from their collective hangovers, they collected 25 octopi and 25 Rubik's Cubes and let the games begin.  Scientist Bonnie Phumph of the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth, Dorset, remarked, "It'll be very interesting to see the results," apparently referring to the government research grant money.

No news yet on the success of the cephalopod subjects' cerebral solutions, although an early leaked report indicates that two of the tentacled brainiacs peeled off the colored labels in frustration, and a third dismantled its Cube and cracked the smaller cubes into fragments.

Look-Helllo Penguins!

More game excitement!!  The upcoming new game in the Night Club isn't the only game activity going on in Club Penguin!  Earlier this summer I mentioned a new level for an existing game... and in a couple weeks a different game will get an update!  Here's a sneak peek for you:

I think the new level is for Jetpack Adventure!

Today was fun because a month or so ago I told you about Trickmaster1, and our fun magical adventures... (click here to read about it). Well I saw him again! Except it was trickmaster's creator on the penguin, he said with club penguin updates his robot was destroyed!!! Dam you club penguin and your updates!!! That sort of came out harshly, heh heh. Well anyways he's working on another robot, and he showed it to me it's pretty cool! I will give more info on the robot in the future...

And today I saw a penguin blinking around town teleporting really quickly! It was cool.

Also I was in an igloo that had April Fools music and a billion TV's! I got to be friends with the owner of the igloo.

It was a really awesome but weird day today!

usually, i am pretty good a deciding what is cool and what isn't.

but whilst sitting outside my window and enjoying a finely rolled american spirit on this gray and murky afternoon, i found myself rubbing my chin over this odd sight:

in case you can't see it all too properly, i've included a close-up.

as you can see, this imported car of sorts is donning the auto-bot insignia on its hood. the color scheme on this vehicle seems to be working for itself, and doesn't look like anything completely tasteless. however, what continues to stump me is the vinyl bullshit on the side of the car. i understand that there needs to be a balance between hood and side, but you can't go from such a geometric transformers insignia to an explosion of some black gooey substance. unless its oil, which i'm sure its not, this doesn't quite work to me. well i don't know. i just wanted to share with you fine ladies and gentlemen one of my qualms. not being able to form an opinion about something is awfully exasperating, so for the first time in so long, i am going to resort to asking others for their opinion instead of interrupting them mid-sentence.

Meanwhile, everyone to whom I've spoken back in Colorado says that it's been hot, hot, hot there. I remember last summer in a house with no air conditioning that got hot in a hurry. We had to run the fans and swamp cooler constantly in addition to going through a routine of opening and closing windows and doors at appropriate times of the day to keep the heat out. Here, we don't really have to worry about it. It's just a nice, moderate temperature most of the time.

We're planning to leave Saturday for a weeklong trip back to Denver. Maybe I'll get to experience some authentic summertime heat after all.
