I'm ordinarily a perpetual optimist about such things...but this? This just...this just seems like a bad idea.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117993158.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

Now don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Smallville. I love its cheesey monster-of-the-week episodes. I love its neverending forrays into increasingly melodramatic angst and intrigue. I love the implausible changes to characterization brought about by machiavellian scheming, lies, betrayal, secrets, and the inevitable ravages of time. With the premise that Smallville started with, it all fits in. I'm not even really a Superman fan and I like it.But...the life of Robin before his parents died? It's just...what can you really do with that?

Now, I know that I'm probably overreacting a bit. I'm imagining the show as "Smallville, but with Robin instead of Superman!" And I doubt the producers and writers tricked themselves into thinking that that's what they'd be dealing with.

But...still.

I wish 'em well, but it'll take some really stellar writing to pull this off.

2am: I stir from being dead asleep into a panicked state from the sound of an unfamiliar voice grumbling in my bedroom. Once I am able to sufficiently calm myself, I realize that I have just awaken to my own moaning and petulant talking in my sleep. I flip on the TV to try and lull myself back into unconsciousness. Unfortunately, the movie Superbad is on HBO and within minutes, I am completely engrossed in its hysterical comic genius. "McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogell? What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer?”

5am: I wake to the comforting sound of the burglar alarm sounding in all its glory and volume. Realizing there must be an intruder in the house, I jump out of bed in search of any possible weapon. The husband’s dirty underwear lying on the floor is the most dangerous weapon we keep in the house. I sweep it up and head downstairs to face the intruder. Once I make it to the den, I notice that the back door is open and the husband is outside smoking, without bothering to disarm the alarm before exiting. The alarm is still sounding and the husband steps back inside and asks, “Why are you holding my underwear?” Clearly, this is the most pressing question as it’s totally normal and acceptable for the alarm siren to be screaming in the middle of the night. I’m certain our neighbors are singing our praises.

7am: My alarm clock sounds and I successfully manage to punch the snooze button three times before I realize that it is not Saturday. I jolt to the shower, paint on some makeup and step outside for the dog’s morning potty ritual. I suddenly hear the familiar sound of ‘Chatty Kathy’s’ unmistakable voice. Imagine, if you will, a voice that is roughly eight octaves above normal pitch. It’s always a pleasant surprise, especially at 7:30am. I am mercilessly pulled into her usual woes of child-rearing and her husband’s travel schedule. I silently plan my exit strategy, but to no avail. After twenty minutes of her rambling, she says, “Yeah, I’ve noticed that your husband is at home a lot. It must be really hard for you to make your bills every month without him working full-time.” I am so touched that ‘Chatty Kathy’ also wears the hat of my financial planner. I’ll have to make sure to drop off her commission check ASAP.

11am: ‘Clueless VP’ has been in the office for fifteen minutes and has successfully managed to ruin everyone’s day. It amazes me that one person’s inept nature and inconsiderate behavior can affect so many people. It is fairly apparent to me that we are all his ‘beeotches,’ some to greater degrees than others. I am no exception.

1pm: I’m working diligently on a project for ‘Clueless VP’ which he labeled as ‘urgent.’ The project actually requires his involvement in order to complete it, which has completely escaped his consciousness. He stops by my office to tell me that he has to leave immediately due to an “emergency at home.” Naturally, I offer my concern and tell him not to worry as I will do my best to complete the project. Family always comes first in my book.

4pm: ‘Clueless VP’ phones me from his cell to check in. I update him on my progress and inquire if everything is okay at home. He replies, “Yes, everything is fine. I just realized at the last minute that Comcast is coming to the house to repair my cable.” Well, let’s just say that it’s a good thing that this was not a face-to-face conversation because my ability to keep a poker face is not one of my best qualities. I respond, “Um…oh, okay. I understand. No problem.” I politely end our call and spend the next hour fuming and in search of a fire extinguisher to put out the flames shooting out of my eyes and ears.

So...basically, this is the price of boredom, a love of punk rawk music, and me trying to "stretch" my artistic abilities. I'm sad to say I've come to one unfortunate conclusion about my art.......I can't draw women. And, I mean, I've spent so much time observing them that you'd think that it'd be easy. But it's not. I mean...you've got the curves and the hair and the curves and the eyes and the curves and the lips...did I mention the curves? ;-) Although difficult to draw, they are one of the best parts of women if I do say so myself.

-----

In other news, today we went to our friend Andrea's house to hang out for a little while. She's really Kristen's friend and then she became my friend...yadda yadda yadda...long story short, I spent some time with her little girls. They're absolutely adorable, hilarious, and they're teaching me how fun and difficult parenting will be. I got to hold her youngest (who is too young to talk and walk but old enough to crawl). It's the first time I'd really ever held a baby before. I hadn't realized that until here lately. But it was a good experience, nontheless.

As a reward for my time spent with her, she decided to go poo in her diaper and her mother forced me to watch to prepare me for the inevitable. Needless to say, it was horrifying. I can handle the poo being there...but the smell was quite rank. Methinks that we will definitely be purchasing some air fresheners when the little guy gets here in December.

Speaking of Aiden, we got our first real "baby shower" gift, today. My Uncle David & Aunt Kay sent us a package with a $75 gift card for Wal-Mart and a cute little outfit and some socks for Aiden. So, if you guys happen upon this, THANKS SO MUCH! It is nice to finally be receiving some things and to know that people out there care.

-----

Well, that's that for tonight, I suppose. Happy Fall Break to everyone out there experiencing some of that.

Yep, finished 'til I decide to rework a few things and colors, This would work on a vertical layout, with a nice font for Dr. Doom. Anyway, that's all for now. Sometimes I tweak too much and I have to pull myself back.

These kinds of days are always Mondays. Wet, cold Mondays. I was in town, spending my birthday money

These kinds of days are always Mondays. Wet, cold Mondays. I was in town, spending my birthday money on new albums, a FLApes ticket (October 12, Cyprus Avenue. Woot!) and a big thick hardback book of "post-underground" comics... whatever that's supposed to mean. I should have been set for the day. But, instead, I was set upon by an uncomfortable feeling with no discernible root - tasting broadly of apprehension and anxiety with subtle hints of fear and sadness; a bouqet of melancholy followed by an aftertaste of gloom. It sat heavy on my chest for the rest of the day.

Later, I met two of my best lady-friends both of whom were in the midst of personal crises, varying from the relatively minor to the significantly more major. Eventually, we retired to one of their houses and watched a chick-flick. I didn't hate it as much as I expected, but it just made me think of Her. And now I have returned home, heart heavy and mind buzzing, unprepared yet to sleep. I turn to the internet for distraction, but find that others have also had a less than pleasing Monday. Must be something in the air.

I still miss Her, so very much. Some days are ok. Saturday was pretty good, but Monday wasn't. Those are the days I miss Her most. I bought Lisa Hannigan's Sea Sew today and looked forward to listening to it. But now I'm afraid because all I'll hear is Her. But it should hurt, y'know? If it didn't, what would the previous three years have meant? But, funnily enough, that's not as comforting a thought as it should be. I'll feel better in the morning, I know. I think then I'll be able to listen to Lisa.

But for now, I'm just glad Monday's over.

Any adventure that yields a good story is an adventure worth having.

One of the core philosophies I try to live my life by is to live with no regrets. It's actually very easy to do. One way is to just stop caring. I don't recommend that way. Instead I try to take something from every action, decision, mistake, etc, I make. Learn from the past, don't dwell on it.

Okay, enough philosophizing for this week. Here's another Charlie and Rose strip. They're fun to write for, so expect more of them in the future. I promise we're going somewhere with all this. Just stay tuned. Everyone just sit back and enjoy the art this week. Absolutely fantastic, Artista. I particularly love how nonchalantly Charlie chucks that red shell at the tailing car. Also the wind in his hair. Our artist kicks major booty.

Shout out and thank you to Sean and Mimi, who recently upgraded their site and added a links page, with us among their friends! Yay! If you haven't checked out their comic, which is equal levels hilarious and adorable, <del>shame on you</del> you should.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. See you all next week.

Not even undomesticated equines could remove me,

Phoenix

PS Reiterating (probably just iterating to some of you) the fact that Craig Ferguson is my hero.

The plot for Marvel's Captain America movie (The First Avenger: Captain America) has been posted online. Fans will be happy to know the Superheroes' origin pretty much follows that of the comics. Set in WWII, after being rejected by the army a skinny Steve Rogers is given the opportunity to participate in Operation Rebirth, having been dosed up to the eye balls with Super-Soldier Serum and trained in the ways of kicking ass and taking names, Captain America is born. Then I guess he'll just kick a load of Nazi ass for about 70 minutes...

Still no director, actors or producers attached to the project, but one thing at a time I guess.

This weekend I started on a new series of paintings called "PULP!" They will make their debut at my upcoming November show at Fort Gallery in Oakland, CA. This series of paintings is actually very similar to the work I was doing back in 2006 before I started experimenting with screenprinting. Lately I've had the urge to go back to hand painting, which is what these are.

So far just the two, "Electric Claire" and "Electric Angie", are for sale on my website, but I will be adding the others in the next day or two so be sure to check back if you like them.

(Please do click on these to make them bigger, I worked really hard on making the color variations interesting on these)

Okay, yeah, I know that a couple of panels look very similar to previous panels. They are. Not exact copies, but I definitely looked to the past when I did them.

See, a brilliant man by the name of Wally Wood once said, "Never draw what you can copy. Never copy what you can trace. And never trace what you can cut out and paste down." Well, I know it may be a bit of a cop out, that I could have found some fancy new way to draw two of these panels... but I knew that what I had drawn before worked, so I went ahead and just copied what I previously did. It isn't the first time I've borrowed heavily from a previous panel, and it won't be the last.

I did pay some penance by whipping out a little perspective drawing there in that middle panel. Fancy, huh?

Anyway, I'm kinda whipped, so I'm just gonna post this. I'll see you all on Wednesday!

I was thinking it was something like stone carvings made to look like balloons or kids holding balloons or something lame like that. That is totally not what this is about. Jason Hackenwerth is a balloon tying master who crafts the oddest shaped creations out of actual balloons. This isn't even in the same universe as a circus clown dog. His pieces are totally insane! I can't even imagine how many balloons it takes or how many he pops, but the end resut is beyond awesome. After looking at the pictures the shapes start to look like creatures and monsters. Some towards the end look like the slug things in the anime Nausicaa If you're into twisted balloon shapes or complete awesomeness in general go check these balloon sculptures out!
