The difference between having a college degree and not having one is far greater than where you go to college. But where you go can determine, to a large extent, who you become. Some of us become jerks. And others spend our lives trying to figure out what it meant to have been there — and how to get over it.

It's funny because the article is about Yale, which is where I am applying for next year (no expectations, mind you), yet that very last sentence is basically an oversimplified version of how I feel about CIM.  Perhaps I am jumping out of the fire and attempting to fling myself into the proverbial frying pan?  Who knows.

I'm not even really sure why I'm aiming for Yale.  Right now all I know is that I'm applying for three things this next year: Yale, Chicago Civic, and New World Symphony.  Realistically speaking, I don't expect to get into any of the three.  Outside of that I'm sort of at a loss.  I don't yet have any backups planned, nor am I even sure if I want a backup at this stage in my life.  Do I really want to settle for a school that I'm not enthusiastic about?  Wouldn't I rather just work for a year and then try again?  But excessive planning is my thing, so to not have a backup feels almost irresponsible.

I am already worried for my next recital.  Perhaps I am overly ambitious?  The current plan is to do the Bach G minor Sonata and the Ysaye A minor in the first half, Debussy sonata and the 19 Shostakovich Preludes that have been transcribed for violin in the second half.  The second half will NOT be memorized, thank goodness.  Currently I have the first half learned but not all memorized.  The second half is material that I have barely touched.  I have two or three months?  Should be fine.  I worry too much.

Returning to Cleveland on August 23rd.  Worry worry worry.  Repetitive self-affirmations that this year will be (different?  better?  more manageable?)

Seit 1. August hab ich keine Alternative mehr, um ins Internet zu gehen. Mein Provider der ersten Stunde hat sich von mir getrennt. CompuServe, wichtig war das große S im Namen, ist seit 1. August nicht mehr für deutsche Kunden erreichbar. Der Dienst endete für mich zum 31. Juli. Damit ist CompuServe IT-Geschichte. Zurück bleibt nur die Erinnerung an ein Tool der ersten Stunde meiner Webtage. Damals gingen mein Kumpel Franz Neumeier, heute Chefredakteur des Internet Magazin (ehemals Internet Professionell), und ich die ersten Schritte. Franz betrieb eine Mailbox. Ich war mit einem Akustikkoppler unterwegs. Beide erkannten wir, was sich für eine Revolution durch das aufkommende Internet anbahnte. Irgendwann entschied ich mich dann für CompuServe als meinen Provider. Ich habe sogar noch einen Brief vom 14. Feb. 1997 gefunden, in dem mir ein neues Passwort mitgeteilt wurde, nachdem ich mein altes verworfen hatte und in den Business Account wechselte. Zum Gang ins Web musste ich den CIM aufrufen. Ich hatte freilich einen Mac. Ich glaube es war ein LC II oder Performa. An den Quadra wollte ich nicht ran für solche Sachen, der war rein dem DTP vorbehalten. Ich musste von Diskette den CompuServe Information Manager, kurz CIM, installieren. Für die jüngeren: Disketten waren Datenträger aus der frühen Silikon Zeit mit maximal 1,4 MByte Speicher. Zum Vergleich: ich habe mir gestern bei Amazon einen 8 GByte Speicherstick für 16 Euro bestellt. Dann musste bei MacCIM das Passwort eingegeben werden und man suchte sich eine Nummer zum Einwahlknoten. Das 5.600-Modem knatterte und pfiff und laut Becker war ich drin. Das ist jetzt vorbei. CompuServe wurde von AOL geschluckt und AOL ist bei vielen heute nur noch durch das Stadium bekannt. Danke CompuServe für deine Dienste.

"The Ministers called for in greater civil-military coordination for major, multinational disaster responses through training, information sharing, and multinational exercises. They recognised that military assets and personnel, in full support and not in place of civilian responses, have played an increasingly important role in regional disaster responses."

This is a timely and vital emphasis and complements processes such as the International Process for Crisis Management by the ICT4Peace Foundation that is facilitating a greater degree of information sharing and interoperability between and within agencies at the United Nations. 

Interestingly however, there is just one mention of "collaboration" in the statement and it's not in relation to disasters or crisis management. It unsurprising to find the emphasis on coordination - which means that a single actor (most often a State) takes the responsibility for managing and preparing for disasters.

Collaboration involves relinquishing authority and inter alia, access to territory to international actors incl. foreign militaries and humanitarian agencies. Collaboration means access to infrastructure - physical and virtual - that shares information that agencies and States may be (at first) unwilling to disclose openly. Collaboration means grappling with agencies that come in and once embedded in the humanitarian effort, take the opportunity to critique the ability of State machinery to respond to the disaster, which opens up the regime to international scrutiny. Collaboration means that actors recognise that no one actor / agency / stakeholder has the power or ability in complex disasters to address all the needs of affected communities over the short, medium and long term.

Yet this understanding of collaboration versus coordination is fraught with very real political consequences. And ASEAN, being a ministerial level junket, is hugely conservative and Statist. Tellingly in this respect, although points 16 and 17 in the Chairman's statement deal with Myanmar, there isn't a word of condemnation for the junta's monumental botch-up of the Cyclone Nargis relief efforts.

Since many countries in ASEAN are fixated with the exclusive understanding of and approach to territorial integrity, sovereignty and national security, it's revealing that Point 9 states that:

In undertaking disaster relief cooperation, the Ministers agreed that several basic principles should continue to apply. These included the principle that the affected country has the primary responsibility to respond to the humanitarian needs of its people following natural disasters occurring within its territory in a prompt and effective manner; where needed, the affected country should facilitate humanitarian assistance from other countries and international organizations to achieve the overall objective of coordinated, timely and effective disaster management and relief based on identified needs; and that external assistance should be provided in response to a request from the affected country, and the disaster relief efforts should be under its overall coordination. 

While all this sounds great in principle, what this also means is that Myanmar's brutal junta can do just as it pleases in response to another disaster, given that the mechanics of coordination lie with the State and that all external assistance is at its behest. 

On the other hand, the the UN's R2P principles are also fraught with difficulties, as I've noted before on this blog in relation to a case like post-Nargis Myanmar.

What could help bridge these differences that are very real, impacts work on the ground and not just semantic?

Interoperability.

A word that does not feature in the statement. Information sharing cannot and will not work without interoperable systems and information sharing architectures.

The colors I will be looking at in this post are all transparent pink shades in the medium to very light variations.  They are: CIM C0915 Pink Champagne, Effetre 067 Rose Quartz, Effetre 082 Lavender Blue (aka Rosatto), Effetre 068 Pink and Effetre 082-A Amber Rose Odd.

You can see the color differences in this Pink Wheel.  While I tried really hard to get the colors right in the image, please note that colors may not appear exact on every monitor.  And the palest color, Rose Quartz, appears really washed out here.

So first, I want to talk about the new Effetre Rose Quartz.  This came out a couple of months ago, when Mike Frantz was going to send it back until someone talked him out of it.  (Rumor of course!) I think he just thought it was a lighter version of Effetre's regular transparent pink - also shown in the wheel. 

Not true!  Rose Quartz and Pink are very different in my view.  Effetre 068 Pink is much peachier in comparison.  Rose Quartz is a very cool, pale baby pink.  I would classify it as a tint - it's so light.  The rods look almost clear unless you look at the ends - that's where you see the most color.  Rose Quartz has replaced 082 Rosatto for me as a layering pale pink - for one very big reason.  More on that later.  RQ makes wonderful layering over Rubino and the various shades of opaque pink.  I've been using it a lot these past few weeks.  It's clarity is nice, it's got a medium amount of stiffness, and it encases well.  Plus - it's baby freakin' pink!!

068 Effetre Pink is the classic oldie of this bunch - it's been around forever.  However, I rarely use it these days, because it just isn't pink to me.  It's peach - granted, a pale, cool peach.  Vetrofond came out with its version of Pink a few years ago, and I liked it because it was slightly less peach.  I didn't have any to compare for this post though, because I had been using 082 Rosatto for so long. 

082 Rosatto was my favorite for a long time, when it came to transparent pinks.  It's official name, Lavender Blue, is really weird, since it's not blue at all.  It does, however, shine a tiny bit lavender-y when under fluorescent lights.  This is why I was so happy when Rose Quartz came out.  But Rosatto is a really pretty color - slightly darker and more lavender than RQ, and great for layering as well.  It's perfect for really berry-shaded purples and pinks in layering.  But for true pink, I love the RQ. 
 

I threw Amber Rose into this party just so you could see another medium shade - this one much peachier and warmer than pink.  In fact, I wouldn't really call this pink at all - but a dirty pinkish amber color.  This color is highly sought after, because of its rarity.  It's not made anymore, but if you can find it, it's well worth the money.  The color is strikingly strange, and makes really gorgeous organic bead bases. I'm on my last rod, and I have no clue what I am going to do with it.  Maybe hoard it forever!

Last but not least is the brand new CIM color Pink Champagne.  Oh, my freaking YUM.  This color is the darkest of the bunch, and delightfully weird.  I would classify it as a medium orchid pink with lavender undertones.  By itself, it makes absolutely stunning spacers.  As a layering color, it's perfect!  It also makes the most gorgeous floral petals when combined with opaque Dark Raspberry Pink (also a rare odd that I am quickly running out of!). 
 

Pink Champagne reminds me a lot of Rosatto, except darker and more "sparkly".  Seriously, CIM's quality is really impressing me.  This color of theirs has gorgeous clarity, a nice stiff consistency (but not Lauscha-stiff) and doesn't bubble or scum like most transparents.  It is a tiny bit more sensitive to temperature change, and likes a hot flame emvironment, as far as I can see.  And the color?  Off the charts gorgeous.  The 104 coe color line has a distinct lack of medium transparent pinks - and this color goes a long way towards filling that gap. 
 

In this bead I started with Opaque Dark Raspberry Pink, encased it in Pink Champagne, then decorated it with clear scrolls. 

So the new pinks - Pink Champagne and Rose Quartz - are right on the money as far as I am concerned.  I sure hope both glass manufacturers keep them in the palette!
