Saw this bottle of wine with the embossed grape and leaf logo and thought it would make a good prop for a stock photo about wine. Took off the label and placed a wine glass behind the bottle which created the illusion that the glass was in the bottle. Placed a sheet of plexiglass a couple of feet behind the bottle and only used one Arri fresnel shining through the plex and bottle to light the set. Used a Cambo 4x5 view camera with a 6x9cm roll film back to record the image on Fuji tungsten transparency film and then scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 9000 scanner.

Shot this for the cover of an annual report for a hospital with a Cambo 4x5 view camera and Kodak b&w film. Used one Speedotron strobe in a soft box for illumination. Props are on a hand painted canvas. The original film was hand developed in Rodinal and custom printed on fiber based paper and given to the client to scan.

I did do an interesting experiment to prepare the image for this blog. Instead of scanning the 4x5 negative I shot it with a Nikon D2x and 55 micro lens on top of a lightbox. Imported the image into Photoshop and inverted the negative image into a positive one. Was very surprised at how well it came out and there was an added bonus, normally when scanning you get a lot of dust that has to be cloned out but this way it does not show up.

How would you like to be this model and get endless pies in the face? And to top it off when you put it in your modeling book nobody can tell that it is you because your face is hidden. Shot this for a mall to use in its food court advertising. It was going to be used large so we shot it on 4x5 film using a Cambo view camera. It was a really messy shoot and I was cleaning up whipped creme for ages as it got all over the studio.

The model never actually got hit in the face. We rigged up a compressed air tank off the set and snaked the hose from behind the models head and aimed it at the pie pan. An assistant would hold the pan filled with whipped creme in place, another would turn on the compressed air at my signal while I clicked the shutter. Used several Speedotron strobes to light the model and seamless paper backdrop.

This is a photograph of some workers for a family run company that has been around for many years. They operate cranes, do construction, rigging, etc., and since they had been in business for so long and had an archive of old black and white photographs they always used one on the annual company calender.

They wanted to break from that and show something more contemporary but still give it an old traditional feel. So the art director decided to use one of their warehouses and park a crane in it with some of the workers and their tools of the trade. We decided to keep the old time feel and a certain rigidity that I would shoot with a 4x5 view camera on black and white sheet film. Used all natural light but was having trouble with the crane and subjects blending in with the background. I had some "smoke cookies" with me so we lit them off and had an assistant directing the smoke behind them. That did the trick perfectly to separate them from the background and also gave the photograph a more atmospheric feel.

A couple of these guys were some pretty macho characters and of course complained about having their picture taken. We shot at the end of the workday and as soon as the siren sounded to signal the end of the shift that was it for these guys and they just walked off the set to punch the clock without so much as a goodbye and nothing we could say brought them back. Luckily we had the shot.

This is another picture shot for stock. Wanted to get a little wild with the colors so used some fine art paper that I bought at an art store for the background. The clock is actually sitting on my tweed covered guitar case that houses my Fender Stratocaster.

Used two Arri fresnel lights, one for the three time zone clock and the other for the background. Cut out some holes in black illustration board for the light to pass through and give it a dappled look. The camera was a Cambo 4x5 view camera with a 6x9cm roll film back filled with Fuji tungsten transparency film that I scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 9000 scanner.

So much advertising is predictable and without thought. Here is an ad I shot many years ago but has always been a favorite because the headline, the body copy, and the photograph all work together to sell the product. The Bible was not a weathered prop but belonged to someone the art director knew. Photographed on grey seamless with a Cambo 4x5 camera, one Speedotron head in a soft box, on Fuji transparency film.

Many people like to talk about our rights as American citizens, but surprisingly have never read the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. This organization wanted to make it easy for anyone to have the info readily available so they printed a pocket sized booklet with both printed out inside. An artist made and aged the props since it would be impossible to photograph the real documents. Found the nice antique wooden table in a university library lobby and shot it after hours to minimize distractions.

Needed a really good sized table because the props were large and the booklet had a wrap around cover so a lot more wood is showing than in this cropped version. Used a Cambo 4x5 camera and Fuji transparency film and Speedotron strobe lights in a large soft box.

This was shot for a theater group upcoming play. The comedy/tragedy masks used to be used frequently many years ago to denote acting. Don't know if younger people today would make that association upon viewing it. Was a really simple shot that didn't take much time at all. Had someone go out and find the masks, then I cut some lumber and laid it out to simulate a wooden floor and propped the masks up from the back for a good angle to the camera. Used a Cambo 4x5 camera, Kodak transparency film, and one Speedotron strobe head in a softbox to the side to capture the image.

Here is a shot that has sold a number of times as a stock photo. Was shot with a 4x5 view camera on tungsten transparency film. Used 3 Arri fresnel lights for lighting. One had a light blue gel to light the front of the hammer and give the metal a cold look. Had another with a yellow/orange gel on the background to warm it up. And one more light with no filtration for fill light on the side of the hammer.

The shallow depth of field was a combination of a near wide open lens aperture and moving the lens standards in opposite ways to achieve the desired result. With photographs like this I am trying to get more of an illustrative look than literal and leaving the picture open to interpretation by the viewer.
