Selon Michael Moore, “This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans,” (...) “The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November. I think Slacker Uprising will inspire million(s) to get off the couch and give voting a chance.”

Le film sera distribué via Blip.TV

You may have noticed that the US election is in full swing, which for me means that it’s time

You may have noticed that the US election is in full swing, which for me means that it's time to tune back into The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. The way that these two programs can distil an issue down to its most salient points, and be outrageously funny at the same time, is amazing.

Because I simply cannot bring myself to pay for Austar, following these two shows means either watching a streamed version on the Comedy Central website, which is low res and means hooking my laptop up to the tv, or getting a copy downloaded to Mrsdave's Mac, which means I have to watch the shows in my bedroom. Neither of these solutions was ideal, but as election season is only once every two years I put up with it.

This week, however, I was saved from my torment by the power of geekiness. After our discussion of all things '80s a while back, I decided to get a copy of Star Blazers to share with Buster Boy. Again, I was left with the problem of having the videos on Mrsdave's Mac rather than in a format that could be viewed in the lounge room. But this time luck was on my side and I stumbled upon a great little piece of software called Rivet, which allows content from Mrsdave's Mac to be streamed over the network to our X-box 360 so that it can be watched on the TV. Added to this I have an app which automatically finds and downloads new episodes of shows I want to watch, meaning that I don't even have to go searching for content, so with a few button clicks on my X-box remote I now have all my favourite shows available to me.

I cannot tell you how cool this is. For a geek like me, who spends their working life seeing technology not working, it is really awesome to see people making stuff like this work so well. So now you know why there's been nothing on the blog for a while, the Argo has just passed Saturn, and Jon and Steven are whipping Sarah Palin back to Alaska, who has time to write?

BitTorrent is a protocol that enables fast downloading of large files using minimum Internet bandwid

BitTorrent is a protocol that enables fast downloading of large files using minimum Internet bandwidth. It costs nothing to use and includes no spyware or pop-up advertising.

Unlike other download methods, BitTorrent maximizes transfer speed by gathering pieces of the file you want and downloading these pieces simultaneously from people who already have them. This process makes popular and very large files, such as videos and television programs, download much faster than is possible with other protocols.

In this article, we'll examine how BitTorrent works and how it is different from other file-distribution methods. In addition, you'll learn how to use BitTorrent and what the future might hold for this innovative approach to serving files over the Internet.

BitTorrent Speak Like most Internet phenomena, BitTorrent has its own jargon. Some of the more common terms related to BitTorrent include:

Leeches - People who download files but do not share files on their own computer with others

Seed or seeder - A computer with a complete copy of a BitTorrent file (At least one seed computer is necessary for a BitTorrent download to operate.)

Swarm - A group of computers simultaneously sending (uploading) or receiving (downloading) the same file

.torrent - A pointer file that directs your computer to the file you want to download

Tracker - A server that manages the BitTorrent file-transfer process

Traditional Client-Server Downloading
To understand how BitTorrent works and why it is different from other file-serving methods, let's examine what happens when you download a file from a Web site. It works something like this:

You open a Web page and click a link to download a file to your computer.

The Web browser software on your computer (the client) tells the server (a central computer that holds the Web page and the file you want to download) to transfer a copy of the file to your computer.

The transfer is handled by a protocol (a set of rules), such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol).

Client-server download process

The transfer speed is affected by a number of variables, including the type of protocol, the amount of traffic on the server and the number of other computers that are downloading the file. If the file is both large and popular, the demands on the server are great, and the download will be slow.

Peer-to-peer file sharing is different from traditional file downloading. In peer-to-peer sharing, you use a software program (rather than your Web browser) to locate computers that have the file you want. Because these are ordinary computers like yours, as opposed to servers, they are called peers. The process works like this:

You run peer-to-peer file-sharing software (for example, a Gnutella program) on your computer and send out a request for the file you want to download.

To locate the file, the software queries other computers that are connected to the Internet and running the file-sharing software.

When the software finds a computer that has the file you want on its hard drive, the download begins.

Others using the file-sharing software can obtain files they want from your computer's hard drive.

Gnutella's peer-to-peer download process

The file-transfer load is distributed between the computers exchanging files, but file searches and transfers from your computer to others can cause bottlenecks. Some people download files and immediately disconnect without allowing others to obtain files from their system, which is called leeching. This limits the number of computers the software can search for the requested file.

Unlike some other peer-to-peer downloading methods, BitTorrent is a protocol that offloads some of the file tracking work to a central server (called a tracker). Another difference is that it uses a principal called tit-for-tat. This means that in order to receive files, you have to give them. This solves the problem of leeching -- one of developer Bram Cohen's primary goals. With BitTorrent, the more files you share with others, the faster your downloads are. Finally, to make better use of available Internet bandwidth (the pipeline for data transmission), BitTorrent downloads different pieces of the file you want simultaneously from multiple computers.

Here's how it works:

BitTorrent's peer-to-peer download process

You open a Web page and click on a link for the file you want.

BitTorrent client software communicates with a tracker to find other computers running BitTorrent that have the complete file (seed computers) and those with a portion of the file (peers that are usually in the process of downloading the file).

The tracker identifies the swarm, which is the connected computers that have all of or a portion of the file and are in the process of sending or receiving it.

The tracker helps the client software trade pieces of the file you want with other computers in the swarm. Your computer receives multiple pieces of the file simultaneously.

If you continue to run the BitTorrent client software after your download is complete, others can receive .torrent files from your computer; your future download rates improve because you are ranked higher in the "tit-for-tat" system.

Downloading pieces of the file at the same time helps solve a common problem with other peer-to-peer download methods: Peers upload at a much slower rate than they download. By downloading multiple pieces at the same time, the overall speed is greatly improved. The more computers involved in the swarm, the faster the file transfer occurs because there are more sources of each piece of the file. For this reason, BitTorrent is especially useful for large, popular files.

I love fast, simple, lightweight applications, so when I discovered Transmission it seemed like a go

I love fast, simple, lightweight applications, so when I discovered Transmission it seemed like a godsend. Transmission is a bittorrent client that's just that: small, simple, fast, easy. The GUI is plain but does the job, and there aren't that much preferences except those that are needed for downloading files.

But lately they changed the layout of their file-selection dialogue, and in my opinion, screwed it completely. First, let's take a look at the old layout, pre 1.30:

[caption id="attachment_161" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="The old, good way of selecting files"][/caption]

The first checkbox controls all the other ones, so when you unselect that, the others get unselected too. I liked that..sometimes I just need a couple of files from a huge torrent. For example, if I needed 6 files out of a hundred, they were just 7 clicks away.

Obviously, this worked too well, so they changed it:

[caption id="attachment_162" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="The new, crappy way"][/caption]

I can live with the extra buttons that determine the download priority (High/Normal/Low). But why replace the checkboxes by "Yes" or "No"? Clicking those doesn't do anything. You have to select the file, and then click the Download or Ignore buttons. Even that wouldn't be so bad if you only had to do it once, meaning if you could select multiple files, but you can't(*)! You have to select each and every file you want to download or ignore, and then click the right button. That means I need 13 clicks now for the same 6 files, moving the mouse left and right all the time. It doesn't seem that important, until you start doing it. It's incredibly irritating, especially since it worked very well before. I can see no reason at all for the new layout. In fact, I couldn't even find it in the changelog.

I have two options now: don't upgrade to anything newer than Transmission 1.21, or use another bittorrent client. Neither is completely satisfying.

San

(*) Edit: Using Linux Mint, I've downloaded 1.33 from GetDeb.net, and discovered that you can in fact select multiple files. It surprised me, since I tried many times to do the same thing in Arch. Either I made a mistake (which is always possible), or something changed without changing the version number (which, I must admit, isn't very likely). It's an improvement, but still worse than the checkboxes

A few months ago top BitTorrent meta-tracker and SuprNova successor, Mininova started distributing content for anyone that wanted to put media in-front of their millions of users. This weekend the good folks at Mininova upgraded their Content Distribution service to include stats generated though Google Charts API. The stats themselves are an interesting window into the pull of specific types of content in different areas of the world. More fodder for algorithmic marketing efforts that can process the data and pull out usable insights into what people want and how they want to get it.

Well, at least Comcast is finally putting a solid number on their previously arbitrary “excess

Well, at least Comcast is finally putting a solid number on their previously arbitrary "excessive download" limit, but this still sucks. :-P

From dslreports.com:

Back in May I broke the news that in addition to throttling back high-consumption users to "DSL like speeds," Comcast was considering implementing a 250GB monthly cap as part of their shift toward "protocol agnostic" network management. Despite consumer grumbling, that plan is in fact now moving forward. Sources tell me that Comcast will officially announce that they're implementing this new system starting October first.

...

"The intent appears to be to go after the people who consistently download far more than the typical user without hurting those who may have a really big month infrequently," says an insider familiar with the project, who prefers to remain anonymous. "As far as I am aware, uploads are not affected, at least not initially." According to this source, the new system should only impact some 14,000 customers out of Comcast's 14.1 million users (i.e. the top 0.1%).

While we won't be sure this is still the case until we see Comcast's plan, the original source indicated that Comcast was considering giving customers one "freebie" every twelve months in regards to the cap. In other words, you'd be able to consume more than 250GB once a year, but consecutive months with violations would result in you getting a wrist slap. Obviously there's lots of questions here, not least of which are whether Comcast's own content counts against the cap, or whether customers will be provided with a usage meter.

(Comcast 250GB Cap Goes Live October 1)

Since this article was originally posted on August 28, Comcast's own site has confirmed this hard limit:

We've listened to feedback from our customers who asked that we provide a specific threshold for data usage and this would help them understand the amount of usage that would qualify as excessive. Today, we're announcing that beginning on October 1, 2008, we will amend our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) available at http://www.comcast.net/terms/use/ and establish a specific monthly data usage threshold of 250 GB/month per account for all residential customers.

250 GB/month is an extremely large amount of data, much more than a typical residential customer uses on a monthly basis. Currently, the median monthly data usage by our residential customers is approximately 2 - 3 GB. To put 250 GB of monthly usage in perspective, a customer would have to do any one of the following:

Send 50 million emails (at 0.05 KB/email)

Download 62,500 songs (at 4 MB/song)

Download 125 standard-definition movies (at 2 GB/movie)

Upload 25,000 hi-resolution digital photos (at 10 MB/photo)

This new policy takes effect on October 1st, so watch that 'torrent traffic. On the (relatively) bright side, Comcast says they will contact you in case of over-usage and tell you exactly how much data per month you've used.

Quan necessitis arxius relativament antics.

Last week the FCC issued an order demanding that Comcast stop degrading the performance of BitTorren

Last week the FCC issued an order demanding that Comcast stop degrading the performance of BitTorrent over their network. Importantly, the FCC is indicating that ISPs cannot block or degrade the performance of legal applications or network services.1

To quote Lessig, "the Commission has clearly recognized the importance of the Internet as a platform for technological growth and innovation." To me this reads as the FCC recognizing at least to some extent that ISPs should be regulated more like utilities than like entertainment providers. The order does not establish law requiring network neutrality, but it establishes FCC jurisdiction over ISPs, and it shows that the FCC intends to enforce its 2005 non-binding Internet Policy Statement — which states that the FCC doesn't want companies to interfere with access to content or competing services. Furthermore, as Harold Feld points out, the FCC clearly states its belief that government regulation to protect the open and vibrant character of the Internet furthers First Amendment values.

This is a Very Good Thing.

Further analysis:
/ Lessig's letter to the FCC
/ Harold Feld — 'Why This is A Huge Win'

--
1An exception exists if an ISP must target an application or network service for "network management" purposes. However, the FCC's order makes clear that an ISP cannot run everything through this exception. If an ISP does contend targeting is necessary for network management, the ISP must inform customers of what they are doing rather than secretly degrading customers' Internet.

Ecco 2 screenshot:

[Editorial note: I did start writing this post a while ago but got sidetracked into other projects and have just finished writing it now]

Thinking about this move is infuriating. Writing about, another thing entirely. First they started sending letters out in 2002, then in 2003 they started suing everyone, in 2004 it was all about BitTorrent and flimsy (both technically and legally speaking) "evidence", 2005 they started attacking the sites themselves. 2006 and they had already started pissing and moaning again. 2007 and widely accepted practice that works for not just one entertainment medium but another for all other types and possibly the saving grace of data transmission sees other content providers using it. 2008...the shit hits the fan and the nanny state strikes again.

In a move which has seen them lambasted by their very own press for the nanny-state style attitude for treating its citizens like "a Headmaster would treat a schoolboy", and after saying they would not become the Internet police (which considering it's founding ideals, would never happen) AKA the gatekeepers of information exchange, 6 British ISP's have folded to corporate pressure and Government interference (read: legislation) and have signed an anti-P2P agreement with the recording industry.

What serves as further antagonism is the RIAA's new wish list in the form of ACTA - the Anti-Piracy Trade Agreement - already, they have been pursing their agenda at the G8 summit and now not content with making sure our own ISP's are now becoming our gatekeepers, they're now pushing for a virtual police state - the very antithesis of what the Internet was designed for: the free flow of ideas and information.

Is it not enough to live in a nanny state but we now have to live in a virtual police state as well?

I just shifted to JAVA for quite a while now because I got tired of this whole microsoft thing. Not

I just shifted to JAVA for quite a while now because I got tired of this whole microsoft thing. Not that visual studio sucks (its really very good) but its also very costly. Besides, its also nice to learn new things (at last!).

So, my shift to JAVA was really bittersweet in a way. Im writing honestly on this subject because I know there are a lot of people who wanted to get a perspective of the REAL experience on actually learning JAVA. Where do I start? Do I really have to start in the whole "hello world" thing? And all those variables and syntax and what-not other things? Anyways, ill start my ranting right about now.

1. First things first, if you REALLY want to learn this uber-cool language. You should be dedicated in learning it. It starts with the mindset. Really. This sounds very simple but for me, it was very important. You have to eat, thing, breathe, and think this whole java thing. If not, then you REALLY will get disappointed. The main quirk is the steep learning curve. In my experience, i spend two weeks just feeling this whole java thing. (yes, i know, im not a GURU so i cant learn very fast in a short while).
Sometimes (if you don't read forums and don't have java friends) a problem cant be fix for hours and hours. so its important to dedicate yourself and BE patient. rome was not built in a day.

2. Its also nice to know other tools (not related to java) to make your life easier in your learning process. Here are the things that help me a lot:

a. Internet - If you don't have internet at home, preferably DSL, your study will be slow. Learning JAVA (in my opinion) relies heavily on the internet (for help, downloading tools, and the whole shebang).

b. Bittorrent - This is a P2P client thing. If limewire is for typical downloader, then bittorrent is the preferred download client for geeks. I used utorrent (torrent client) for downloading ebooks....ehem, its illegal but im in the philippines and IT books are suppose to be very expensive. Besides, I'm not promoting piracy here. My opinion is you read ebooks and see if it fits you. If you like it then you buy the book . I've scanned hundreds of ebooks and realized that i dont need/like 50% of them. I use 30% as reference and the rest as the main book i'll read. Imagine buying a single book and realizing later on that you dont like its presentation.

c. DOS commands - those "dir" and "cd" and other commands you studied in college will REALLY help you.

d. Windows powertoys - if your learning JAVA in windows environment, this will be an indispensable tool. I use the "multiple desktop" tool of powertoys to not get my brain get confused on all those opened windows.

e. Direct Folders 3.3 - I use this to popup my frequently used files and folder. Pretty handy!

f. Launchy - i use this to launch websites, files, and others in a heartbeat. also very handy.

3. Where is the GUI?
Learning JAVA is the inverse of learning .NET. in .NET, you rely heavily on the GUI. In java, you stare at the codes primarily.

4. classpaths! aarrrgggghhh!
The classpath. I struggled a lot on this at the beginning. Really. It took a while before i really understood this classpath thing. Here is my analogy for newbies:

Classpath is like a global variables when you open the command prompt (terminal on linux). So if you have this classpath "JAVA_HOME=c:\java\afolder\anotherfolder" and inside "anotherfolder" there is "virus.exe" then its like you can execute this "virus.exe" anywhere because you have the classpath.

So issuing command like this:

c:\Documents and Settings\stikiflem\virus.exe

is perfectly valid because you have set the path of virus.exe on the classpath.

NOTE:

i. To set the classpath in winxp, just type "Winkey" + Pause to bring up a properties dialog. Go to "Advanced", then click "Environment Variables"
ii. Another quirk. If you open the DOS prompt and after that, you change the classpaths, you have to close that window and bring it up again. If you dont, changes you've made wont get save on your currently opened window. THIS IS IMPORTANT. I almost shaved my head trying to figure out why my environement variables dont work.

5. Ahh, the good stuff.

Here are the basic java tutorials that are very effective (for me anyways):

a. http://chortle.ccsu.edu/CS151/cs151java.html (NOTE: i skipped the Part 5, 8 and 10. Concentrate instead on Part 4 & 7 especially if you want to know about object oriented programming in java.

b. Get the ebook/book "Head First Java" and later "Head First Servlet and JSP". I totally recommend it. The way the lessons are presented will really stick on your brain! And its very funny too. I'ts much more effective that java for dummies IMO.

6. After that, i studied a lot of web technologies. JAVA alone is boring. really! If you want to study JAVA to build GUI applications then i suggest you study .NET instead. Why? Because JAVA's forte is not building GUI, although you could build one. .NET is much effective because it has a lot of tools for RAD development. .NET is much faster and effective on GUI or desktop apps IMO.

Learning JAVA and combining it with web technologies is where the fun starts! I think this is the secret to why JAVA is so cool. i think this is the primary reason why you should learn JAVA: to build web apps. here is my learning trail that might guide you:

1. Learn HTML then read XHTML - I learn this on www.w3schools.com That site is really good for studying. its got an examples page that you could tweak and run which is very helpful.

2. XML - This is being used extensively on building web apps, usually on setting up configs.

2. Learn DOM (Document Object Model) - This is very important on web development. I studied this also on w3schools. It is important to study this before studying javascript.

3. Learn Javascript - on w3schools. this is a client-side scripting language. Typically used in client side validation....and AJAX! ;)

BTW, i used the Firefox browser and that little powerhouse plugin firebug. You could actually debug a javascript, make breakpoints, at watch. etc etc. its really that cool! You can't do this on internet explorer. :P

4. Learn about AJAX - this is a combination of XML, DHTML and javascript. In short, just look at your gmail account and see it in action.

5. Learn to set-up a Tomcat - this is a servlet container...if you've read step 5 section b then you'll get what im talking about.

6. Learn Eclipse/or Netbeans - this is a JAVA IDE that will make your life easier. I primarily used eclipse because its way cooler and more people use this instead of netbeans. I use this tutorials to learn the details on how to use eclipse:

NOTE: This is the best tutorial on using IDE ive encountered so far. Its video-based so the learning is very fast. Also there are other tutorials on this link. See them for yourself.

7. Learn Struts - its an MVC (Model-View-Controller) framework. A framework to separate the presentation from business logic stuffs. its that 3-tiered thing your professor is telling you about in college that you have no idea what he's talking about. Learn this and it will look VERY good on your resume ;) hehehe.

So that's it! ive shorten and omitted/forgot others in between. I'll post it here later on when i can. Hope this article will help you. It seems a daunting task if your a newbie. Don't get discourage. Google up java forums and post/read things to broaden your knowledge (Forget the Sun's forums, by the way. I'ts not very noob friendly. Most of the regulars there are really arrogant. ). Ask a friend who know's about java and can tip you on where to go next (this is very much needed). If you have questions, dont hesitate to message me. I'll be glad to help in any way i can. Trust me, after a month or two, you'll be glad that you learn JAVA.

Good luck on your quest padawan learner!
