<title><![CDATA[Tales of the Pneumonia Ridden Girl]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For the next little while, I won't have much to discuss.  You see, I have pneumonia.  I am destined to spend a great deal of time in bed for the next little while. In between non restful naps and coughing fits- I have gotten the following things accomplished.</p>
<ul>
<li>Changed out of my pajamas into real clothes</li>
<li>Went to get a chest x-ray</li>
<li>Read about half of the items that are on my google reader.  So far, I have gone back to May - although I am skipping anything that has to do with babies.</li>
<li>Listened to a whole lot of Bach this morning...I believe the musician playing it was Rostropovich</li>
<li>I have washed many many dishes, and cleaned all the counters in my kitchen.  Only because my back hurt from coughing, and laying in bed.  </li>
<li>Wrote this blog post.</li>
</ul>

<li>A nap -although I am pretty sure its not going to help</li>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-size:14pt;">Judecătorul s-a gândit la o metodă prin care să-l înveţe pe Andrew Vactor ce înseamnă muzica bună şi nu zgomotele pe care le asculta el acolo şi i-a dat de ales. Fie să plătească o amendă de 150 de dolari, fie să savureze 20 de minute de Bach şi Beethoven. Zis şi făcut.</span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-size:14pt;">La început, rapperul s-a cam fâstâcit, după care a acceptat. A fost dus într-o încăpere a secţiei de poliţie unde, sub supravegherea unui ofiţer a început ”culturalizarea” lui.</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few days ago, I was writing a post and my son came in. He asked what I was working on and when I told him, he asked, "Is it another rant?"</p>
<p>It wasn't. It was my post about Natalie, but he did make me think. I feel nervous, sad and angry a lot of the time these days. I am not naturally pessimistic. In fact, I would say I have a tendency toward happiness and irrational hope. Or at least I used to. Lately, it's been hard not to get discouraged. I start out each morning with an urge to stay informed and involved. <em>Today</em>, I think, heroically, <em>might be the day I make a difference.</em> But by noon, I'm turning off NPR because I don't think I can stand to hear another scary story.</p>
<p>Then yesterday, they aired a story about the Barefoot College in India. Founded by Sanjit Bunker Roy in 1972, the college trains unemployed rural youth and women as solar engineers. There are no prerequisites for attendance. Barefoot College students do not earn degrees or certificates, but they do learn valuable skills which they bring back to their villages, increasing technical and financial self-reliance for themselves and their communities.</p>
<p>On a day when I'd been pummeled by stories of negative campaigning, plunging stock markets and rising unemployment rates, the Barefoot College story felt like a sort of mental oasis. A chance to remember that greed and narrow mindedness have not yet replaced all that is good in the world. So, in case you need the same kind of breather, here are a few stories from <a href="http://www.happynews.com">www.happynews.com</a>. Enjoy (for tomorrow, I shall, undoubtedly, rant again)!</p>

It was not trying too blatantly to convince, was not overlong. Perhaps I might call it accessibly philosophical. Liked how comfortably he could stay on an abstract thread of thought.</span></em><em></em></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;color:blue;">The only point on which I would quibble (more "expand" than "disagree") is the "accessible" part of accessibly philosophical. Here, I would try to distance the patronizing subtext that "accessible" can sometimes import. The way his philosophical perspective here can draw a reader in and along is consummately literate and that is one of the parts that I really like about his writing through these sections. His prose has a lean clarity, usually without becoming cold or dull. His word choice frequently betrays the comfortable, literate reach through historical English that extends his discourse in enlightening ways. I think one gets a sense of this as well in his book (alluded to in _Diary_) on censorship. </span></p>

In many cases I simply want to  hold his statements in mind and wonder, do I agree?<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Según un estudio realizado por el australiano Martin Jarvis, de la Universidad Charles Darwin, la segunda esposa del gran compositor Johann Sebastian Bach no sólo fue su musa y copista, sino que probablemente compuso ella misma algunas de las piezas atribuidas al músico alemán.</p>
<p>Durante los últimos siete años, el profesor de música Martin Jarvis ha aplicado diversas técnicas de <strong>análisis forense</strong> para <strong>estudiar las partituras de Bach</strong>, centrándose sobre todo en la estructura y el lenguaje musical, las anotaciones y la caligrafía. Entre los muchos manuscritos analizados destaca el de la <strong>Primera Suite para Violonchelo</strong>, que data de 1727. Los historiadores sostienen que se trata de una copia realizada por <strong>Anna Magdalena</strong>, segunda esposa del compositor alemán. Pero Jarvis asegura que los movimientos son cortos y demasiado simples en comparación al resto de la obra de Bach, lo que hace sospechar una autoría diferente. Por si fuera poco, el investigador encontró <strong>una nota en francés</strong> en la cubierta de los manuscritos de las suites para violonchelo que dice literalmente <strong>“Escrito por la Señora Bach, su mujer”</strong>, y no “copiado”, como se ha querido interpretar.</p>
<p>De momento l<strong>a hipótesis de Jarvis no ha sido bien recibida en el círculo musical</strong>, y asegura que ha recibido muchos correos bastante desagradables criticando sus conclusiones. Sin embargo, son muchos los científicos y musicólogos que apoyan sus resultados.</p>
<p>La semana próxima, Martin Jarvis presentará por primera vez su estudio a la comunidad forense durante el <strong>Simposio Internacional de Ciencias Forenses en Melbourne</strong> (Australia). Y espera que eso de pie a que otros expertos profundicen más en su hallazgo.<br />

<title><![CDATA[This disgusts me:  Unusual rap punishment]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just read <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27099954/?GT1=43001">this</a> article at msn.com this morning and, while I get that it was supposed to be funny, actually makes me angry a little bit.   Here's the paragraph from the article that got me:</p>
<p><em>Andrew Vactor was facing a $150 fine for playing rap music too loudly on his car stereo in July. But a judge offered to reduce that to $35 if Vactor spent 20 hours listening to classical music by the likes of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin.</em></p>
<p>Now let me get a few things straight:  I generally dislike most rap music and I very much love most instrumental music and I still find this terribly offensive.  First and foremost I have a problem with the law telling someone they need to change their taste in music.    I even believe that and understanding and appreciation for music history could improve a person's life, but that's a choice they make for themselves.  Even if there was a clear case of classical = smart/rap = dumb, it's still a person's right to be dumb.  A more fitting punishment would be to put a rig on his personal stereo so whenever he listened to his favorite music all he would hear would be the muffled bass. </p>
<p>Second, I don't like the idea of "classical" music being seen as a punishment.  It really is real music, and it's very good.  Looking back on the public school experience I can attest to music education being a joke.  It's taught very much like math, no enthusiasm, no passion.  And while I'm on the subject, why not have a passionate teacher for math, or any other subject for that matter? </p>
<p>My last point has everything to do with the generalization of classical music by either the judge or perhaps just the wording used by the people who wrote this article.  Let me clarify, the classical era of music took place between 1750 and 1810.  The composers they  listed were Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. . . okay, let me break this down.  First of all, many Bachs composed music so I can only assume they meant Johann Sebastian (but this is just a nitpick).  Johann Sebastian Bach lived between 1685 and 1750; thus, he wrote <em>baroque </em>music.  Beethoven, they got right, he lived from 1770 to 1827 (way to go, article).  Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) wrote what we musically educated folks like to call <em>romantic </em>music.  </p>
<p>Any of you reading this might be thinking "So?  Most of this music sounds the same, why not just call it classical music?"  My answer to you is yes, much of it does. . . and, really, I don't care if you use "classical" to describe any and all music written for horns and strings.  I wouldn't even tease or mock you behind your back.  I realize that music education is a joke and honestly most people don't have time to consider these things, and that's fair.  However, if you're in a position of power and find it appropriate to forcibly educate someone, well then you'd better have the goddamn facts straight your own self.</p>
<p>So Andrew Vactor may be an asshole and if that's the case I'm glad he's getting fined for his mass irritation of others.  Upping the fine for repeat offenses is another measure I would support.  But leave <em>my</em> music the hell alone when looking for a punishment.</p>

<title><![CDATA[World Communion, installation and an apartment update]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This past Sunday was an extremely eventful day, the crest of the first big wave of energy and activity for me here at <a href="http://parkavenuechristian.com">Park Avenue Christian Church</a>.  It was <a href="http://www.ncccusa.org/unity/worldcommunionsunday.html">World Communion</a>, a day when many denominations celebrate their unity with Christians around the globe.  I've been thinking recently that we should see every Sunday as World Communion, in the way that I have heard it said that every Sunday is an Easter celebration.  It is so important for the American church to be intentional about welcoming the marvelous gifts of our sisters and brothers around the world.  Serious engagement with music and language from other cultures can help to expand and deepen our prayer and praise.  And it is a way for us to be connected to and in prayer for people and places that we might otherwise forget.</p>
<p>For our celebration we invited a steel drummer, a percussionist and a Trinidadian friend who is an actor and poet to lead us in music and poetry from the Caribbean - a excerpt from a gorgeous Kyrie samba by Glenn McClure; the joyous response 'Halle, Halle, Halle'; 'God or Mammon', a challenging poem by the Afro-Trinidadian poet, Alfred Cruickshank; the Communion hymn  'Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ' and others. It was a truly joyful feast of the People of God!  One of the most beautiful moments in the service was the Postlude - a simple setting of 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' played by solo steel drum with some light chordal accompaniment from the piano.   The congregation sat in grateful silence and it felt, in some way, like we were hearing Bach's piece again for the first time through the distinctive, sparkly tone of the steel drum.  We gave our guests a gift by honoring and celebrating the music and culture of our Caribbean sisters and brothers but, at the same time, they gave us back something of own culture, infused with a fresh sound and spirit.  It was a blessed moment.</p>
<p>And on Sunday afternoon I was officially installed as the Minister of Music at Park Avenue Christian Church.  I was joking with friends that they should bring their toolboxes to worship.  When I think about the word installed, my mind goes to a dishwasher or a light fixture -  something that has a sense of functionality and/or permanence in a place.  But the truth is that the service was a time to intention, before God and this congregation, that I am going to put down deep roots here.  It was a moment to remember that my ministry through music is not just something to dabble in but it calls forth deep commitment and discipline, prayer and focus, and love for all of God's people in this faith community, in this neighborhood and in this city.</p>
<p>And to add further to the sense of arrival and permanence, I got word on Monday that I was approved for an apartment.  The original place I mentioned several postings back did not work out but this one is even better and cheaper in the end.  It's the ground level and first floor of a brownstone in Harlem with a spacious living area (enough room for my piano!), 3-bedrooms, 1.5 baths, and a private backyard with real grass!  It's not much further from church and in a great neighborhood.  I am feeling very blessed.</p>
<p>So all is moving forward, deepening slowly...and I have a strong sense that God is in and through it all.</p>

<p>Δέχεσαι τον ισχυρισμό του ΚΦΕ Μπαχ ότι καλό είναι να χρησιμοποιηθεί μόνο πληκτροφόρο όπου είναι δυνατόν στο έργο;</p>
<p>Πιστεύεις πως έχει νόημα, αν χρησιμοποιηθεί τσέμπαλο, να παίζει κοντίνουο (με συγχορδίες) στην Επιδιαπέντε; Στον Canon perpetuus;</p>
<p>Στον per Augmentationem, contrario Motu τι θα πρότεινες?</p>
<p>Θα σου άρεσε ο a 4 με 2 τσέμπαλα?</p>
<p>Έχω ήδη ένα πλάνο δικό μου, το σύνολο που χρησιμοποιούμε είναι τραβέρσο, βιολί, τσέλο και 1 ή 2 τσέμπαλα (αν έχουμε τη δυνατότητα για 2 θα μου άρεσε πολύ, κυρίως για τον per tonos και τον a 4). Θα με ενδιέφερε πολύ η άποψή σου,  αν νομίζεις πως ο εδώ είναι ο κατάλληλος χώρος να το συζητήσουμε!</p>

<p>1. Για το «μόνο πληκτροφόρο όπου είναι δυνατόν», όχι, δεν το δέχομαι (με εξαίρεση φυσικά τα δύο ricercare, που είναι φτιαγμένα για πληκτροφόρο). Πού υπάρχει αυτός ο ισχυρισμός του C.P.E.? Στους περισσότερους κανόνες υπάρχουν ταυτοφωνίες και διασταυρώσεις που σε εκτέλεση με ένα πληκτροφόρο συνεπάγονται κατά τόπους ακατανόητα αποτελέσματα ως προς το ποιά φωνή κάνει τι. Ο μόνος κανόνας που μπορεί να παιχτεί φυσιολογικά σε πληκτροφόρο είναι ο δίφωνος Querendo invenietis. Εξ άλλου, μπορεί οι περισσότεροι κανόνες να είναι 'αφηρημένοι', χωρίς δηλαδή υπόδειξη για συγκεκριμένα όργανα, το έργο όμως φτιάχτηκε για τον (φλαουτίστα) βασιλιά Φρειδερίκο και τη μουσική 'παρέα' του, άρα μου φαίνεται παράλογο να αποκλείσουμε πρώτα από όλα το φλάουτο και κατόπιν τα έγχορδα με δοξάρι. (Και οι πρώιμες εκδόσεις της ΜΠ γράφουν ότι είναι κατάλληλη για οποιαδήποτε όργανα.)</p>
<p>2. Για την Επιδιαπέντε ψηφίζω σαφώς όχι κοντίνουο. Είναι για σόλο μονοφωνικό όργανο και δύο obbligato φωνές στο τσέμπαλο, όπως δηλαδή πολλά μέρη από τις σονάτες του Μπαχ για φλάουτο και τσέμπαλο ή βιολί και τσέμπαλο. Και δεν έχει καν σημεία όπου η πάνω obbligato φωνή να απουσιάζει για τόσο μεγάλο διάστημα που θα σήμαινε μεταστροφή προς κοντίνουο. Επί πλέον, προσθήκη κοντίνουο θα αφαιρούσε από τη διαύγεια του κανόνα της φωνής αυτής με το σόλο όργανο.</p>
<p>3. Ο Canon perpetuus, αντίθετα, είναι από τους ελάχιστους όπου προσδιορίζονται τα όργανα: οι πρωτότυπες πάρτες γράφουν (όπως και για την τρίο σονάτα) "Traversa", "Violino", "<em>Continuo</em>".</p>
<p>4. Στον Per augmentationem contrario motu λογικότερη (αν και πιθανόν όχι μοναδική) λύση θα θεωρούσα όργανα παρόμοιου χρώματος για τις δύο φωνές που είναι σε κανόνα, ώστε να είναι εμφανέστερη η σχέση τους, και διαφορετικό για το παραλλαγμένο 'βασιλικό' cantus firmus. Ανεξάρτητα από αυτό, η ψηλή φωνή του κανόνα κατεβαίνει μέχρι το σι της πρώτης βοηθητικής στο κλειδί του σολ και το CF μέχρι το σολ της δεύτερης, άρα και για τις δύο αποκλείεται το φλάουτο. Έτσι για το σύνολο που υπολογίζεις δεν βλέπω λογική λύση, εφόσον δεν έχετε δεύτερο βιολί, εφόσον για οποιοδήποτε ζεύγος φωνών με τσέμπαλο υπάρχει το πρόβλημα που αναφέρω στο "1", και με δεδομένο ότι θεωρώ γελοιότητα το να παίζει το τσέμπαλο μόνο μία φωνή (το CF δηλαδή - με βιολί και τσέλο για τις δύο φωνές που είναι σε κανόνα). Η μοναδική αξιοπρεπής λύση που μπορώ να σκεφτώ είναι να τρανσπορτάρετε το κομμάτι σε Σολ ελάσσονα και να το παίξουν τα τρία μονοφωνικά όργανα.</p>
<p>5. Όποια σειρά εισόδων και επίπεδα να διαλέξει κανείς, ο Canon a 4 έχει προβλήματα με τις σχετικές αποστάσεις των φωνών, ενώ επίσης ορισμένα σημεία του είναι άχαρα και βεβιασμένα αντιστικτικά. Δεν μου αρέσει με κανέναν συνδυασμό οργάνων. Με δύο τσέμπαλα θα μου φαινόταν ως το μουσικό κουτί ενός παράφρονα - με μονοφωνικά όργανα μου φαίνεται λιγότερο αχώνευτος. Καταγράφω τις σειρές εισόδων στις εκτελέσεις που έχω:</p>
<p>Kuijken: τσέμπαλο πάνω φωνή, τσέμπαλο κάτω φωνή, βιολί, τσέλο.<br />
Savall: βιολί, βιολί, γκάμπα, γκάμπα.<br />
Harnoncourt: βιολί, φλάουτο, βιολί, τσέλο.<br />
Netherlands Bach Ensemble: βιολί, φλάουτο, τσέμπαλο, τσέλο.<br />
Sonnerie: γκάμπα, όμποε, φαγκότο, βιόλα.</p>
<p>Διαφωνώ με τα δύο μπάσα του Savall: το μπάσο έρχεται ως κατακλείδα σε μιά σειρά εισόδων που ξεκινούν από τα πρίμα, οπότε η δεύτερη εμφάνισή του είναι ανενεργή - λογικότερη από αυτήν την άποψη η εκδοχή του Harnoncourt. Διαφωνώ και με τους δύο τελευταίους, που φέρνουν το πιο ενδιαφέρον χρώμα πολύ νωρίς, με το Sonnerie επιπλέον γιατί αφήνει τελευταία τη (λιγότερο ευδιάκριτη) μεσαία φωνή.</p>
<p>Για το δικό σας σύνολο θα πρότεινα (ίσως): τσέμπαλο πάνω φωνή, τσέμπαλο κάτω φωνή, βιολί, φλάουτο. Ή (επίσης ίσως): βιολί, φλάουτο, τσέμπαλο πάνω φωνή, τσέμπαλο κάτω φωνή ντουμπλαρισμένη με το τσέλο.</p>

<p>Παναγιώτη σε ευχαριστώ πολύ για τα χρήσιμα και κατατοπιστικά σχόλια!</p>
<p>Αυτό που τη στιγμή τούτη μπορώ να θυμηθώ είναι πως ο ισχυρισμός του CPE για τη χρήση πληκτροφόρων αναφέρεται σε μια διαφημιστική καταχώρηση που αφορά την Τέχνη της Φούγκας. Τριγυρνά όμως στο μυαλό μου πως ο CPΕ γενικότερα το υποστήριζε αυτό, χωρίς όμως να μπορώ να αναφερθώ σε κάποια πηγή. Ότι δηλαδή, στην πολυφωνία προτιμάμε το όμοιο ηχόχρωμα σε όλες τις φωνές, και διαλέγει πληκτροφόρο για το λόγο αυτό. Αν έχεις υπόψη σου κάποιο σχετικό λεγόμενο του CPE που να υποστηρίζει ή και να αντιτίθεται σε αυτό, μπορείς να με βοηθήσεις! Δυστυχώς δεν έχω (ακόμα) αποδελτιώσει τα σχετικά βιβλία που διαθέτω και έτσι η αναζήτηση αυτή τη στιγμή θα μου πάρει πολύ χρόνο –και αν θα βρω κάτι στα βιβλία που έχω…</p>
<p>Επίσης, ο Moroney στο inlay του δίσκου ΗΜΑ1951260, στηρίζοντας την επιλογή του για 2 τσέμπαλα, αναφέρει, μάλλον πονηρά κατά τη γνώμη μου το εξής: “C. P. E. Bach proudly wrote a letter to a friend explaining how the big ricercar was intended for the harpsichord. When all the voices are controlled by one player the expressive possibilities of the counterpoint are presented with great overall cohesion. Therefore, the canons are also played on one harpsichord when possible, or on two when necessary, to preserve the unity of timbre so essential to the music’s cohesion and harmonic force.”</p>
<p>Και λέω «πονηρή» διατύπωση, γιατί δεν χρησιμοποιεί εισαγωγικά ή κάποιο άλλο μέσο για να είναι ο αναγνώστης σίγουρος που τελειώνει ο Μπαχ και που αρχίζει το συμπέρασμα του Moroney…</p>
<p>Ακόμα πιο χαρακτηριστικά, αναφέρει παρακάτω: “Bach specifically asks for a different approach in two cases: the canon following the trio sonata (for flute, violin and continuo); and the second of the six diverse canons (for ‘violin[o] al unisono’) –the violin therefore follows in unison the right hand of the harpsichord.”, αφήνοντας να εννοηθεί πως ο κανόνας είναι ‘για (ένα) βιολί σε ουνίσονο.</p>
<p>Ο C. Wolff όμως, στο βιβλίο του Bach, essays on his life and music παρουσιάζει έναν πίνακα αναφοράς περιεχομένων της ΜΠ, και αναφέρει τον κανόνα “ a 2 Violin: In unisono’ (σ. 241). Σημαίνει για 2 βιολιά, ή μήπως για 2 φωνές με το βιολί σε ουνίσονο (προφανώς με το τσέμπαλο;) . Η χρήση του a 2, a 3 κτλ αναφέρεται κατά τα άλλα στις φωνές και όχι στα όργανα! Άρα, είναι ήξεις-αφίξεις και δεν μπορεί να βγει ασφαλές συμπέρασμα (δεν ξέρω αν στο πρωτότυπο είναι πιο σαφές-δεν το έχω δει). Παρακάτω στο ίδιο βιβλίο (σ. 253), ο Wolff αναφέρει τον κανόνα ως ‘a 2 violini in unisono’, προφανώς δηλώνοντας την δική του ερμηνεία. Η Baerenreiter Urtext επιμέλειας Wolff, που όμως αναφέρει πως είναι πιστή στην NBA αναφέρει a 2 violin<em>i</em> in unisono, όπου italics είναι προσθήκη σε σχέση με την NBA. Καταργεί τη διπλή τελεία μετά το 2.</p>
<p>Λόγω της ασάφειας αυτής (ή μήπως δεν πρόκειται για ασάφεια; Παναγιώτη τα φώτα σου!) αλλά και ελλείψει 2ου βιολιού, διαλέγω την εκδοχή τσέμπαλο+1 βιολί.</p>
<p>Όσον αφορά τους υπόλοιπους κανόνες, οι 2φωνοι παίζονται μια χαρά και είναι διασκεδαστικοί στο τσέμπαλο με 2 κλαβιέ. Ακόμα και οι Perpetuus Super Thema Regium , Per augmentationem contrarium motus, αλλά και ο per Motum Contrarium, παίζονται άνετα με τσέμπαλο+ένα όργανο για το θέμα. Μάλιστα για τον Per augmentationem contrariο motu θεωρώ πως το σχήμα με τα 32α είναι ιδιωματικό τσέμπαλου ως τσεμπαλίστας το βρίσκω κρίμα να το δώσω σε άλλον!</p>
<p>Κάτι επιπλέον για τα 2φωνα: στην περίπτωση που θα είχαμε όμοια όργανα, θα είχε νόημα να παιχτούν από αυτά, κατά το παράδειγμα των ντουο στο μπαροκ. Από τη στιγμή που αυτό δεν είναι δυνατόν, προτιμώ τη λύση του τσεμπάλου σε 2 κλαβιέ, το οποίο υπήρχε στο περιβάλλον του Μπαχ και του Φρειδερίκου.</p>
<p>Για την Επιδιαπέντε μου αρέσει πολύ η άποψή σου, ειδικά το επιχείρημα για τις σονάτες για τσέμπαλο και σόλο όργανο. Και συμφωνώ πως το κοντίνουο στερεί από την πολυφωνία. Γιατί όμως έβαλε κοντίνουο στον Perpetuus;</p>
<p>Ο Moroney κάνει τον a4 με 2 τσέμπαλα. Είναι λίγο το μουσικό κουτί που αναφέρεις, αλλά δεν είναι και τόσο κακό… Δεν ξέρω αν το έχεις ακούσει. Οι συνηχήσεις θυμίζουν λίγο τα κοντσέρτα για 2-3-4 τσέμπαλα και μου αρέσουν…</p>
<p>Παραθέτω εδώ την επιλογή μου όσον αφορά το ποιος παίζει τι. Δεκτό και επιθυμητό κάθε σχόλιο.</p>

<p>- Η διαφήμιση του CPE είναι 7/05/1751 (βλέπε The New Bach Reader σελ. 257). Το σημείο για τα πληκτροφόρα που θυμάσαι δεν έχει σχέση με συστάσεις ή προτιμήσεις (είτε γενικές είτε για τη ΜΠ): απλώς επισημαίνει ότι οι φούγκες στην Τέχνη της Φούγκας είναι φτιαγμένες για πληκτροφόρο παρά τη γραφή σε 4 πεντάγραμμα.</p>
<p>- Το ότι όμοιο ηχόχρωμα είναι καλύτερο για την πολυφωνική μουσική είναι αρχή που υπάρχει από την αναγέννηση, αφορά όμως την περίπτωση φωνών με όμοιο υλικό: φωνές διαφορετικής φύσεως εξυπηρετούνται από διαφορετικό ηχόχρωμα (η καταπληκτική πολυφωνία στις καντάτες του Μπαχ δεν είναι με όμοιο ηχόχρωμα). Επιπλέον, από την ενδεχόμενη προτίμηση για μονοχρωμία ουδόλως συνάγεται τσέμπαλο για τους κανόνες της ΜΠ: και δύο βιολιά, ή βιολί και τσέλο, μονοχρωμία είναι!</p>
<p>- Ο Moroney είναι γενικώς αυτό που λέει το όνομά του... Ως προς την επιστολή που αναφέρει, η μόνη σχετική που μπορώ να βρω είναι η του 1788 (μακροσκελής αντίκρουση παρατήρησης του Burney ότι στις φούγκες για όργανο ο Handel ξεπέρασε μέχρι και τον J.S. Bach - βλέπε The New Bach Reader σελ. 401-8). Η επιστολή αυτή δεν είναι προς «φίλο» του CPE αλλά προς τον Γερμανό μεταφραστή και εκδότη του κειμένου του Burney, είναι ανώνυμη, και η απόδοσή της στον CPE είναι ανεπιβεβαίωτη -και όχι η μοναδική- υπόθεση (προσωπικά θα θεωρούσα πιθανότερο συγγραφέα της κάποιον μαθητή του JS). Και το μόνο που αναφέρει για το 6φωνο Ricercare της ΜΠ είναι ότι ο JS είχε γράψει και πεντάφωνες φούγκες για πληκτροφόρα, ακόμα και αυτήν την εξάφωνη, ενώ ο Handel μόνο τετράφωνες. Στο απόσπασμα που παραθέτεις (και ορθώς χαρακτηρίζεις πονηρό) μόνο η πρώτη φράση σχετίζεται με τον CPE - τα υπόλοιπα είναι σκέψεις του Moroney.</p>
<p>- Η σκέψη του όμως για τον a2 in unisono δεν είναι παράλογη. Βεβαίως θα μπορούσε να είναι για τσέμπαλο και <em>ένα</em> βιολί, όπως δηλαδή η Epidiapente. Από την άλλη, στην Epidiapente (που αρχίζει στην ίδια σελίδα με τον a2) δεν υπάρχει καμμία επισήμανση για μονοφωνικό όργανο, άρα γιατί να υπάρχει στον a2 αν σήμαινε το ίδιο και όχι <em>δύο</em> βιολιά; Από την άλλη πάλι, μπορεί να υπάρχει επειδή είναι η πρώτη φορά που χρειάζεται αυτό και να υπονοείται για τις επόμενες.</p>
<p>Τώρα, όσον αφορά το τι ακριβώς γράφει το πρωτότυπο, είναι όπως το γράφει ο Wolff (αλλά χωρίς τόνο στο "a" - κλικ για μεγέθυνση):</p>

<p>Στα χειρόγραφά του ο Μπαχ τις δύο τελείες τις βάζει για λέξεις που κόβονται, π.χ. "Recit:", "col accomp:". Δεν έχει όμως σωθεί το χγ των κανόνων αυτών, και δεν βλέπω τι νόημα έχει να κόψεις ένα γράμμα όλο κι όλο από το Violino ή Violini - από τα οποία, όπως κι ο Wolff και η NBA (και η BG), θεωρώ πιθανότερο το δεύτερο (με το ":" ως παραφθορά του "i").</p>
<p>- Όσον αφορά το αν οι κανόνες μπορούν να παιχτούν σε κλαβιέ, δεν είπα ότι υπάρχει τεχνικό πρόβλημα για τον εκτελεστή: βεβαίως και γίνεται (σε τσέμπαλο με δύο κλαβιέ, όπως λες), και τέτοια μουσικά παιχνίδια είναι πρωτίστως για τη διανοητική απόλαυση αυτού που τα μελετά και τα παίζει μόνος του. Εκείνο που είπα είναι ότι υπάρχει πρόβλημα ευληπτότητας <em>για τον ακροατή</em>. Γι' αυτό, αν μιλάμε για δύο κλαβιέ, θα θεωρούσα χρησιμότερο το εκκλ. όργανο (όπου μπορείς να έχεις διαφορετικό χρώμα σε κάθε κλαβιέ).</p>
<p>- Γιατί έχει κοντίνουο ο Perpetuus; Γιατί όχι; Για να εξαντληθούν οι περιπτώσεις, να υπάρχει δηλαδή και ένας συνοδευόμενος κανόνας (με την υφή της τρίο σονάτας). Αυτό δεν συνεπάγεται τίποτα για την Epidiapente, αφού στον έναν είναι γραμμένα τα νούμερα και τίποτα για το δεξί χέρι ενώ στην άλλη το δεξί είναι γραμμένη φωνή απ' την αρχή ως το τέλος.</p>
<p>- Για τις προτάσεις σου:</p>
<p>Canon perpetuus super Thema Regium: Flauto+violin+cello</p>
<p>Ή, φυσικά, το ένα από τα πρίμα όργανα για την πάνω φωνή και τσέμπαλο για τις δύο άλλες.</p>

<p>ΟΚ - έτσι κι αλλιώς εδώ δεν τίθεται ζήτημα ευληπτότητας ή μη του κανόνα, αφού είναι αδύνατον να αντιληφθεί κανείς (τουλάχιστον την πρώτη φορά που το ακούει) ότι η αρχή της μίας φωνής είναι το τέλος της άλλης. (Σε συναυλία θα θεωρούσα απαραίτητο να υπάρχουν σημειώσεις που να εξηγούν πώς είναι κάθε κανόνας.)</p>

<p>Όπως είπα στην προηγούμενη απάντηση, για την εκδοχή 2 τσέμπαλα με ενοχλεί η ιδέα το ένα να παίζει μόνο μία φωνή, και για την εκδοχή με βιολί και τσέμπαλο το πρόβλημα των διασταυρώσεων. Για μένα καλύτερο θα ήταν βιολί και εκκλ. όργανο, ή τρία μονόφωνα όργανα (αλλά αυτό δεν γίνεται με τα όργανα που διαθέτετε: αν τρανσπορταριστεί για να μπορούν να παίξουν τις δύο πάνω φωνές τα δύο πρίμα όργανα, θα είναι υπερβολικά ψηλή η κάτω φωνή για το τσέλο).</p>
<p>Για τον Per Augmentationem και τον a4 σου είπα τη γνώμη μου στα "4" και "5" της πρώτης μου απάντησης.</p>

<p>Στον a4 με τον Moroney (δύο τσέμπαλα) αυτό που δεν μου αρέσει είναι οι όντως προβληματικές αποστάσεις με τις φωνές. Δεν με ενοχλεί όμως σε βαθμό ικανό να με κάνει να απορρίψω την εκδοχή. Τα τσέμπαλα βέβαια που χρησιμοποιεί ο Moroney, αλλά και το παίξιμό του, ποτέ δεν μου άρεσαν. Επίσης, δεν μου αρέσει ο ήχος με ένα ρεγίστρο. Καλύτερος τσεμπαλίστας, καλύτερο όργανο και ίσως διπλά ρεγίστρα θα έδιναν ένα καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα. Θα το δοκιμάσω και θα δούμε. Ο Goebel τον κάνει με τσέμπαλο (διπλό ρεγίστρο) και 2 βιολιά, είναι πολύ καλύτερος.</p>
<p>Και κάτι ακόμα για τους 2φωνους με τσέμπαλο. Σε ορισμένα τσέμπαλα (στα περισσότερα θα έλεγα) υπάρχει διαφορά ηχοχρώματος μεταξύ των 2 κλαβιέ. Οπότε δεν τίθεται θέμα μπερδέματος των φωνών, το ηχόχρωμα της κάθε μίας μπορεί να είναι διαφορετικό. Ίσως βέβαια σε κάποια τσέμπαλα η διαφορά αυτή δεν είναι αρκετή για να ξεκαθαρίζει το πράγμα. Σε κάποια άλλα όμως η διαφορά είναι από ικανοποιητική ως επαρκέστατη. Το τσέμπαλο που θα χρησιμοποιήσω έχει ρεγίστρα με τελείως διαφορετικό ηχόχρωμα. Το κάτω κλαβιέ (principale) έχει στρογγυλό, τραχύ και πολύχρωμο ηχόχρωμα, θυμίζει αρκετά virginal. Το πάνω κλαβιέ είναι πιο ομοιόμορφο και διάφανο, διόλου ένρινο, και θυμίζει τσέμπαλο σχολής Αμβέρσας (Ruckers, Couchet ή κάτι ανάλογο), χωρίς να υστερεί σε όγκο. Η ηχοχρωματική διαφορά των 2 κλαβιέ είναι λοιπόν μεγάλη και με καλύπτει.</p>
<p>Επίσης: τι θα έλεγες, για τον καρκινικό, να έπαιζα πρώτα μία φορά σκέτη τη μία φωνή, ούτως ώστε μόλις μπει η 2η να είναι εμφανές πως η αρχή της 2ης φωνής είναι το τέλος  της πρώτης;</p>
<p>Για τις σημειώσεις στο πρόγραμμα θα ήταν ιδανικό. Όμως έχω ήδη γράψει ένα κείμενο 1800 λέξεων το οποίο πραγματεύεται θέματα γενικότερου ενδιαφέροντος γύρω από το έργο, και φοβάμαι πως για εξειδικευμένες σημειώσεις για τον κάθε κανόνα δεν υπάρχει χώρος. Ίσως κάνω έναν προφορικό πρόλογο και δείξω πως λειτουργούν οι κανόνες και με παικτικά παραδείγματα.</p>

<p>BIG TRUCK are a young West London-based rock band. They have been established for just over a year now, having played almost 50 shows in and around the London area. In this time BIG TRUCK have not only recorded their debut album ‘One Long Saturday Night’ but also played a sold-out show at Camden’s Purple Turtle to celebrate its first press. Since then BIG TRUCK have been well received on many independant radio stations in the UK including Total Rock, Inferno and Brit FM to name a few. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://fellowprisoner.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/picture-675.jpg"></a>Nearly 277 years ago, Bach immortalized the nexus of coffee, female cunning, and marriage in The Coffee Cantata. Christian Friedrich Henrici wrote the <a href="http://www.afactor.net/kitchen/coffee/kaffeeKantate.html">libretto</a>, and Bach's Collegium put on the Cantata's first performance in 1732 at Zimmerman's Coffee House in Leipzig.</p>
<p>Zimmerman's was probably the Mandolin Cafe of its day, if one could presume to compare present-day Tacoma to baroque Leipzig. Realistically, one probably should not attempt such a comparison. <p>The Coffee Cantata is a wonderfully festive, satirical piece well known to every lover of Bach and esteemed by cultured coffee aficionados.</p>
<p>The Cantata's story line is simple and wastes no time. Maid Lieschen and her father are having a bit of a tiff over Lieschen's coffee habit.</p>
<blockquote><p>"Mm! how sweet the coffee tastes,<br />
more delicious than a thousand kisses,<br />
mellower than muscatel wine.<br />
Coffee, coffee I must have..."</p>
<p>"You wicked child, you disobedient girl,<br />
oh! when will I get my way; give up coffee!"</p>
<p>"Father, don't be so severe!<br />
If I can't drink<br />
my bowl of coffee three times daily,<br />
then in my torment I will shrivel up<br />
like a piece of roast goat."</p></blockquote>
<p>The frustrated father escalates, threatening to obliterate any marriage prospect for Lieschen if she will not give up coffee. She breaks:</p>
<blockquote><p>"From now on, coffee,<br />
remain forever untouched!<br />
Father, listen, I won't drink any. . . ."</p></blockquote>
<p>But, lest we think Lieschen's priorities are in order, the Narrator's Recitative reveals her secret vow:</p>
<blockquote><p>"Lieschen secretly lets it be known:<br />
no suitor is to come to my house<br />
unless he promises me,<br />
and it is also written into the marriage contract,<br />
that I will be permitted<br />
to make myself coffee whenever I want."</p></blockquote>
<p>I'm not so sure Lieschen selected the single most important criterion for a prospective husband, but at least she wasn't too high-maintenance. After all, she only wanted to be able to make her own coffee. It wasn't as if she was looking for someone who could keep her in Zimmerman's coupons.</p>
<p>In any case, it is as difficult to overestimate the interface of coffee with courtship and marriage as it is to document it.</p>
<p>I have recently resumed drinking coffee after a year off from all caffeine. The time-out turned out to be an unnecessary deprivation. To make up for lost time, and just because my taste inexplicably upgraded, I switched to espresso.</p>
<p>Now coffee has taken on new importance. I have a cup in the morning with my husband, and a cup in the early afternoon, at 1:00 if my routine is intact. By 12:40 I'm on countdown.</p>
<p>Mornings I make a French press of coffee for my husband and a stovetop machinetta of espresso for myself. I don't at all mind cleaning up two coffee devices. So far as I'm concerned, the more engagement with the brew, the better. I hope this isn't the sign of some sort of unhealthy overfondness for the stuff. I don't think so: I'm down from the three pots a day of my law school years, to a derisory two cups. My husband's coffee habit has modulated similarly. We have no recorded document mentioning coffee.</p>
<p>My law school days were rife with coffee adventures. The evening before my first day of school, I bought a coffee maker with an automatic timer. I could program Mr. Coffee the night before to make coffee in the morning, and I would fill my thermos on the fly before rushing off to class.</p>
<p>I set up Mr. Coffee that night. In the morning, my first day of classes, I raced downstairs to pour my freshly made coffee into my 32-ounce Stanley stainless steel thermos, a relic of American workmanship. But there was no coffee. The unit was plugged in. The lights were on. Mr. Coffee's heating element was defective. I didn't want to get rattled...surely there would be coffee at school....</p>
<p>There was no coffee, and no time to go to the U-Cen before class. I knew I was about to be the first student in my law school's history to flunk orientation.</p>
<p>Before commencing the first night's prodigious stack of reading, I exchanged Mr. Coffee for one that lasted about a year.</p>
<p>About a month into our first semester, one of my classmates coined the saying, "Lauren's little drinking problem." Carl was referring to my uncanny flair for spilling coffee on my white sweater. If I wasn't wearing a white sweater, it seemed I could drink successfully without dribbling.</p>
<p>But by far the most hapless coffee casualty was the loss of my Stanley thermos, still three-quarters full of coffee. Food and drinks were prohibited in the law library, and I left my thermos on the table outside the library door. When I came out, my thermos was gone.</p>
<p>A friend persuaded me to call campus security. A "campo" (campus police) came over, took my statement, and assured me that they took these things seriously. I refused to permit a search of my classmates' carrels. We concurred it was likely that a homeless person walked in the door, snatched my precious thermos, and took off. I didn't mind so much springing for the thief's coffee, but he could have returned my thermos when he was through.</p>
<p>I replaced my Stanley with a compact Zojirushi that fit in my backpack, where it secretly remained with me in the library at all times. Its cap is a demi-tasse cup, and the stainless steel-lined carafe holds 10 caps full. I still have the sleek red Zojirushi; I daresay I'm probably a little overprotective of it.</p>
<p>Like Lieschen, I make my own coffee. Once I acquired the knack of making stovetop espresso, I was making the only coffee I really take pleasure in drinking.</p>
<p>But I pity Lieschen. Had she actually lived, she would have left the world at least a century before the advent of espresso. Who knows whether espresso would have tempered her daily habit from three bowls to a couple of modest <em>tassen</em>?</p>

<p><strong>Confession: </strong>I'm so sorry, there is no puppy makeover post. I know, I know. The groomer took one look at the trembling, scared shitless (no, seriously, he pooped in fear), unruly Conor and said, in his elusive South American accent, "No. No, no, no. I no groom him today. No."</p>
<p>Sigh.</p>

Alfonso allowed us into the salon, where we talked and let Conor off-leash for about 30 minutes. Alfonso sat on the floor, threw Conor into his lap, and started to snuggle and kiss and pet Conor. It was insane. Gradually, Conor became slightly more comfortable, but Alfonso wants us to drop him off in a few small increments of time - one half hour here, another hour or so there - in the next week or so before he grooms Conor on Friday. He even asked us to leave the two of them alone yesterday while M &#38; I went to get coffee, so we did. There were appx. six other puppies there as well. In the window. THE WINDOW. Just like the song. I swear to God. When we returned (it really did feel like dropping your kid off at preschool for the first time, Best In Show kidding aside), Conor was sitting primly in the window with the other puppies:</p>

Hand to God, I don't know why we have two such special dogs. One chases 18-wheelers and the other one hides behind mama's legs like a little scaredy cat baby.</p>

Let's just say that yesterday, more than any other day this year, I needed surprise puppies in windows and ponies in my life, and Old Oakland seemed to know it:</p>
