Kees de Tippelaar (Kees the Trotter)
3 October is the anniversary of L.C. Dudok de Wit, better known as 'Kees de Tippelaar'. He was given this nickname because of his many long distance walks across the globe. He lived at country estate 'Slangevecht' which is now a restaurant and he determined in his will that every kid in Breukelen should be treated to 'poffertjes' (small pancakes, typical Dutch) on his birthday. For this occasion, the 'poffertjes' stall of the Van der Steen family especially comes to Breukelen. In the local bookshop you can find a biography on Kees de Tippelaar and his bronze statue can be seen in the park Boom en Bosch.

Toti!

Atunci incepe o triere stricta a celorlalti.

Nu e o lume in trei cuvinte, ci fiecare univers in trei cuvinte:

al meu, acasa, mereu;

printz, Bucuresti, prezent;

tu, aici, dragoste.

It was our first weekend in The Netherlands...why not start it off with a bang?

We rode to Den Haag Centraal on our trusty bikes, something we are now old hands at.

[caption id="attachment_39" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Kaushik was naturally worried about me using his camera to take this photo whilst I was riding"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_40" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="I have learned to ride with my handbag on my shoulder, a tricky task at first"][/caption]

Once we arrived at the station to park our bikes, we made sure to remember where we left them.

It takes about 45 minutes on a train to get to Amsterdam, so it's kind of like Sydney's equivalent of hopping on a train to the city from the suburbs...although the scenery on the way is a little more picturesque over here!

Hopping off the train in to Amsterdam is a realisation of "Wow.....it really IS big!". And it really was.

The buildings tower over you with their old sandstone faces, smiling with charm and flirting with their flowering pot plants sitting on their window sills.

People on their bicycles busily whizz around you and impatiently ring their bells. It's hard to remember to keep off the bike paths when you're in awe of a new place.

Kaushik and I spent most of the day just wandering around, following the canals and enjoying what was a beautifully sunny day. We also dropped by the local markets and marveled at how much cheese and meat is available. As always...I knew this already...but once you see it for real, it just confirms the ridiculousness of it all.

[caption id="attachment_44" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_45" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Thank heavens it's 'Bio'"][/caption]

As always with us, food was on our mind. After walking around and browsing a few different cafe's and restaurants, we found one which suited both our palettes. I had a goats cheese salad and Kaushik had some kind of pasta. Goats cheese is very popular over here, especially in vegetarian meals. Lucky I like the stuff!

Post lunch activities included looking for some second-hand clothing shops, which if you know me, is one of my biggest pleasures in life....how shallow. Kaushik managed to find a really great buy for 20 euros: a practically new blue woolen jumper which looks like it's from the marines.

We also walked through the red light district with the famous half-naked ladies in windows, advertising their goods. I giggled, they winked at me and Kaushik seemed a little flustered.

It was time to quench our thirst with a little pub-hopping. The photo below shows what a lot of the pubs looked like: old, dark and beautiful. I really need to take my slr next time so I can do these pubs justice.

After an hour or so of sampling the local ales, we could no longer ignore the fact that we were in Amsterdam. So yes, we did visit a coffee shop. And yes, I giggled a lot at anything Kaushik would say and then we ate our dinner which at the time we thought was one of the best meals of our lives.

The beer was beginning to play havoc on our bladders so we entered the first available bar and headed straight to the toilet. "No! No!" a frustrated man said as he pulled at our arms.
"What? We just need to go to the bathroom!"
"You can't just use our bathroom, you must pay!"

PAY? I thought. Pay? For such a "chilled out" place, I found it crazy that you have to pay some places to use their toilets! Although, as he explained, if you don't buy a drink at a bar, it is only fair to pay them a fee to use their bathroom.

It's experiences like these that remind you of the fact that you are in a different country and need to be aware of social mores and courtesies.

By now we were naturally sleepy and decided it was time to bid Amsterdam farewell. But before that, I stole a plastic tulip from a table decoration somewhere. I used it to hit Kaushik with on the train ride home to prevent him from falling asleep.

Pinch me hard 'cos my clog blogger competition entry just won the Blog08 prize. In a nutshell, that means that I am now going to Blog08 in Amsterdam. This also means that I will be wearing clogs. All. Day. Long.

The competition was a huge amount of fun to take part in and the other entries were incredibly clever. I also have to thank competition adjudicator, Andy Bargery, for sharing my somewhat eclectic sense of humour. Without that I wouldn't be sitting here thinking so much about CLOGS.

Click here to see the competition announcement.

Now for the part where I need help. Yes, help, and we're not talking about padded jackets or small purple pills (although you could be forgiven for thinking that after seeing The Clog Blogger). I need help planning what I do after the day at Blog08. If you've been to Amsterdam and you think you know what a girl in clogs (that's me) should see/ do/ eat while she's there, please let me know!

Now please forgive me if I'm quiet for a while. I have to set up The Clog Blog. After all, I did promise...

DEEEN HAAG - Het kabinet trekt 405 miljoen euro ui

Coalitiepartij PvdA is tevreden.

Strain/Brand: White Dolphin, The Dolphins

Origin: Indica-Sativa

Impression: White crystals everywhere, light-colored hairs, light green leaves. Excellent construction, nice herbal scent as it breaks up. Aroma is refined but the after-taste is a little too sharp.

Buzz: Quite powerful but easier-on-the-throat than other varieties. A fun buzz with medium-heavy body effects - very nice blend for intense yet mellow high.

Price: 10 euros for 1 gram

Summary: If you're looking for a powerful but civilized smoke, White Dolphin will take to the peaks without completely thrashing your throat.

P.S. Try the Northern Lights from the The Dolphins if you're looking for uncontrolled power, super skunky stoney-ness, and maximum lung expansion - you'll be majorily stoned from hit one but be forewarned it's not an easy smoke by any means! (that explains why there's no photo!)

"Sol, Sol, wherever you may be": football, abuse and human rights

Following the abuse directed at Sol Campbell during the recent Portsmouth versus Tottenham Hotspur (

Following the abuse directed at Sol Campbell during the recent Portsmouth versus Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) match, the former England defender said:

“It’s out of hand now...This is a human rights situation. If this happened on the street you would be arrested”

It is not the first time that Campbell has suggested this. Back in December 2007 when he, Alex Ferguson and Avram Grant had all been subjected to varying levels of abuse, he stated:

"This is a human rights situation where professional sportsmen - managers as well - want to do their job professionally and people are abusing them verbally"

Having been a Millwall FC fan for some 30 years, Campbell's comments split my sensibilities. Working with human rights on a day to basis, I appreciate that everyone has the right to freedom from degraded treatment and from discrimination in respect of your rights and freedoms: discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, class and so on.

However, individuals also have the right to the freedom of expression and so if paying football fans are criticising 'bad' players, do they not have the right to boo and complain also?

Of course, I'm playing Devil's Advocate and realise that players are subjected to some of the most appalling verbal abuse (see here for my own experience). And there is some evidence that the abuse received by Campbell may have been of this type. Rod Liddle in the Times suggests that Tottenham fans were singing to him to the tune of the hymn, 'I am the Lord of the Dance':

Sol, Sol, wherever you may be,

You’re on the verge of lunacy,

And we don’t give a fuck when you’re hanging from a tree,

Judas cunt with HIV

In that song alone there could be allegations of racism (hanging from a tree), anti-Semitism (Judas cunt) and homophobia (HIV), let alone the mention of mental illness. If Liddle though is right, much of this is incidental: included in the song largely because it rhymes. The argument that he gives for this is that if anyone knows Tottenham Hotspur FC, they'll know that their fans identify themselves with Israel and Jewish culture: even their hooligan 'firm' are called The Yid Army. To suggest therefore that Spurs fans might be anti-Semitic is - if Liddle is right - somewhat ludicrous. Personally, I'm not convinced and where racist, anti-Semitic or homophobic abuse was directed at Campbell, so the legislation is in place for the necessary action to be taken, something the FA appear to be taking seriously.

But I do think that Liddle has a point in that it would seem to be part and parcel of being a professional football player that you will receive some abuse at some time. Without this, away matches would be quite anodyne experiences, resulting in even fewer people going to watch live football which would no doubt be good news for Sky and Setanta. Some of the greatest strengths of certain team's stadiums - Millwall's Old Den being a case in point - has been the atmosphere and 'reception' that away teams and their players get. Many managers - including Alex Ferguson - have been known to call on this and regularly the home crowd are described as the '12th man'. The question now is whether the crowd can still be the '12th man' if they don't abuse - intimidate? - the opposition?

Given my knowledge of football, I know that Fratton Park - home of Campbell's Portsmouth FC - is one of those stadiums where the home fans create an extremely hostile atmosphere. To suggest that 'Pompey fans' are any different from Spurs fans would therefore be wrong and so I wonder whether Campbell will - when overhearing abuse being directed at players from Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal et al - be recommending that his own fans are ejected from the ground and duly prosecuted? I very much doubt it.

Without wishing to endorse such abuse, I do think that some barracking is not only acceptable but somewhat necessary. Where it steps over the line into racism, sexism, homophobia etc, is of course where this becomes unacceptable. But when a player that earns £100,000 per week plays bad and is harrassed for this alone, then I do think that little else can be expected.

And as in the case of Campbell in particular, when you deliberately walk out on a club that you have previously captained and pledged allegiance to at the expense of losing that same club up to £15 million from his sale to its closest and bitterest rival, then I guess that you are not really endearing yourself to 'the fans'. Likewise, when he went AWOL halfway throughout a match for Arsenal - allegedly ending up in Amsterdam - he must accept that he hasn't exactly acted in an entirely professional manner, again not in a way that fans might warm to you.

The players themselves should also reflect upon their own behaviour. The Football Association has this season launched 'Respect', a campaign that seeks to address the lack of respect that professional players - amongst others - show towards match officials. Watch 'Match of the Day' two weeks in a row and you'll no doubt see various multi-millionaire players repeatedly telling the referee to 'Fuck Off' in no uncertain terms. In an article from 2007 in The Times, this point was voiced much better than I have here:

...on the subject of terrace abuse, Sol Campbell made the point that “if this happened on the street, you would be arrested”. Very true, but the rules of modern football do not apply easily to the real world. Emmanuel Eboué, one presumes, does not “grass up” fellow motorists for parking illegally, let alone for doing so legally; John Terry does not follow policemen around the High Street, telling them how to enforce the law; Cristiano Ronaldo does not dangle a leg and tumble to the floor in the hope of getting a fellow shopper arrested; not even El-Hadji Diouf spits at a passer-by in the street, at least not unless they have looked at him the wrong way.

Absolutely true.

Maybe - Sol Campbell listen up - the players should also begin to realise that if you pledge allegiance to a particular club, one that the fans themselves live and breathe and commit increasing amounts of their hard earned wages to, then it is pretty obvious that when you leave and go to your bitterest rivals, you won't exactly get a red carpet welcome on your return. Anyone remember Wayne Rooney's comment of 'once a blue, always a blue' before leaving for the red of Manchester United?

What is most worrying about this episode is that professional players at the top of their game increasingly seem to be unable to differentiate between the world they live in and what might better be described as 'the real world'. Yes, they want huge salaries and are prepared to accept the adulation and praise when they see fit. But then when things go wrong or the press 'intrude' beyond the carefully stage-managed photo-ops, they complain they are being over-criticised, over-scrutinised and treated downright unfairly. As the same article in The Times put it when Campbell first argued the human rights abuse case:

It seems that defending your human rights – freedom from criticism, the right to simulate, freedom to self-worship – is to become a Premier League footballer’s new catch-all phrase in times of trouble, or at least confusion

I totally support Campbell in his suggestion that players - and indeed fans - should not have to be subjected to racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic or Islamophobic abuse either on or off the pitch: none of us should. But I do not support Campbell if all he is suggesting is that players should not be subjected to any criticism - what I feel that he is sometimes equating with verbal abuse - whatsoever, whether that be because he believes that he is above criticism or merely because the self-worshipping cult of the untouchable football player that he and far too many others are already a part of is continuing to increasingly cloud his vision of reality.

NEW YORK – October 6, 2008 – Reminding customers that transatlantic travel in today’s tight economy doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort for cost, OpenSkies today announced new low fares in its PREM+ cabin for the first 1,000 customers each on its New York – Paris and New York – Amsterdam routes.

Starting today, OpenSkies will offer PREM+ fares for $499* one way between New York and Amsterdam and $599* one way between New York and Paris, with all fares based on round trip purchase. OpenSkies’ PREM+ cabin is a completely new service category offering comfort, space, service and amenities that rival many competing business class offerings. With its cost-efficient fares, PREM+ also qualifies for use by business travelers whose corporate travel policies would otherwise restrict business class travel. OpenSkies’ extraordinary PREM+ sale will continue until the 1,000th ticket is booked on each route.

“As frequent travelers ourselves, we can appreciate how important a comfortable seat with a generous recline, more legroom, and attentive cabin service can be on a long flight, and we believe a challenging economy doesn’t have to put those things out of reach,” said Dale Moss, managing director of OpenSkies. “With a maximum of just 40 guests in our PREM+ cabin, we offer a business class experience without the business class price tag. In many ways, the PREM+ cabin is tailor made for today's economic environment.

Retail Refugees does not endorse any particular products, but sometimes a great idea appears and should be recognized as such.

Financed by a Dutch organization that supports the homeless (SZN), they aligned with a linen company start selling a duvet cover resembling cardboard boxes. A large portion of the proceeds are going to support SZN. Read more about the project and order the product here.
