Ten years ago, when the government was wasting its time trying to impeach President Clinton for lying about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, I was probably at my most cynical.  Here I was, a registered Republican for four years trying to come to terms with some of my more liberal social beliefs, hoping to reconcile with the hardliners who made it their goal to enforce prohibition of every immoral act they could imagine.

Never mind that morality is subjective, and a socially conservative regime could easily declare nose-picking to be inherently iniquitous and jail people for it.

So I was in the mood to skewer faith-based groups, especially at the very local levels.  I thought to myself, Hmmm... Catholic church, Methodist, Episcopal: there are some perfectly good traditional places of worship out there.  So who is this Happy Valley Outreach Community Worship Chapel anyway?  And why are there 80 similar places in East County, scattered about the landscape as ubiquitous as taco shops and gas stations?

Then I found an "invitation flier" attached to my screen door.

We have taken the opposite approach.

  • Identify homophobia as the problem and not homosexuality and talk to friends, families and co-workers about homophobia. For some people, the only time they talk about LGBT people are in homophobic "jokes".
  • Support anti-discrimination efforts, as well as campaigns to stop discrimination and violence.
  • Listen to the experience of other gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people, assume their experiences are valid ones.

Practical Magic is one of the best liked witch dramas ever made. It follows the troubled romantic lives of two sister witches with suspenseful twists that will keep its audience itching for more.   
   Originally a novel by Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic underwent much transformation before it landed on the screen. The two works are far apart, and the only similarities are the characters and their personalities.
    Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) are sisters from a long line of witches: The Owens. After their mother dies from heartbreak, the sisters move to live with their eccentric witch aunts. A curse is unintentionally passed down to every woman in the family by one of their ancestors, a bitter woman who’s lover didn’t seek her.   
         Sally and Gillian are characters immediately recognizable from a thousand different places. They are stereotypical, and one dimensional. It is their magical background and abilities that keep the movie interesting and the audience alert when otherwise neither would be.
    Sally is down to earth, and always seeks to be normal, and to avoid risks. Her sister Gillian is the opposite, with the red hair that matches her dare-devil character. Just as their personalities, their love adventures are opposite as well, Sally’s are predictable, normal, while Gillian’s are crazy, and sometimes dangerous.
     Practical Magic distinguishes itself from  the other pile of magic movies with the congenial acting of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. They fill the roles giving the surreal events of the film an approachable feel. 
    The movie succeeds in delivering what it promises; still, in some parts the audience is left confused due to lose twists which never find their way back to the main plot line. Although, it seems, that is too much blame to put on a movie from a genre where most lack a plot altogether.
     Considering it's a fan favourite, the 5.5 rating (out of 10) on IMBD is a disappointment. Looks like a lot of the wrong crowd watched it- it has been rated 16 650 times so far.
    Watch it if you are interested in magic movies, it’s one of the better ones in the genre; or if you want to watch a movie that doesn't require you to exert every brain cell you have.

Não é porque estou prestes a completar 23 anos de idade, mas a vida me soa engraçada. Às vezes, leio coisas que escrevi na juventude (tempos remotos, parecem) e sinto um pouco de vergonha. Na verdade, acho que vergonha é palavra expropriada. Nesse caso, especificamente.

Pensava que falar sobre os meados dos 1990 era mais fácil. Digo meados, pois só passei a entender o que eu escrevia aos 12 anos de idade. Ou seja, 1997. O século 20 já tinha até acabado, de acordo com Hobsbawn. E, convenhamos, os assuntos não apresentavam lá muito conteúdo pragmático. Grande erro julgá-los assim.

“Ontem à noite, papai foi jantar com mamãe. Ele está feliz. Um ditador malvado do Camboja morreu.” Era Pol Pot. Tirano que matou um quinto da população local e decidiu tomar um porre com líderes camponeses. O chefe do Khmer Vermelho (alguém aí se recorda do Vietnam?) deu último suspiro às proximidades da Tailândia, em 1998.

Numa cerimônia mórbida, como havia de ser, Pol Pot foi cremado e jogado fora, literalmente, em um aterro sanitário. Apodreceu ao lado de pneus velhos, latinhas de cerveja e estrume.

Obviamente, só fui saber quem fora Pol Pot depois. Não muito depois, mas depois. Vovô havia me falado sobre aquele genocídio em conversa informal. Em um café da manhã com frutas da estação, Toddynho e noticiário esportivo na TV.

Meu interesse pela Guerra Fria começou mesmo ao avesso. “Wearing the inside out”, diriam os ingleses. Lembro-me, claramente, de chegar a casa e dizer ao vovô: “Ele se chamava Saloth Sar. O nome verdadeiro de Pol Pot era Saloth Sar.”

John Lewis Gaddis, professor de história em Yale, Connecticut, teme pela memória desse conflito entre dois mundos (ou três mundos, para alguns. Para mim, inclusive. Desconsiderar a pressão dos países nacionalistas seria ingenuidade.). Ele acredita que a Guerra Fria tornou-se algo equivocadamente distante. “É como falar sobre a Guerra do Peloponeso.” Triste fardo repartido.

Enfim, dez anos se passaram desde o meu primeiro e despretensioso texto sobre Pol Pot. Desde o fatídico café da manhã com vovô. Desde a morte de um déspota sanguinário que lutou sem legitimidade por princípios marxistas-leninistas destorcidos principalmente por Stálin (human and useless).

Aliás, o maior erro do comunismo: lutar por causas destorcidas através de regimes totalitários. Sem o aval póstumo de Lênin, Trótsky ou Karmenev (vide foto), que levaram os bolcheviques ao poder durante a Revolução Russa, em 1917.

Assunto para outras discussões socialistas, talvez.
