Other works portraying Daley, weapons, protest and outrage toward Chicago accompany Barnett Newman's "Barbed Wire" at  the "1968," exhibit, which looks at the violence and protest in Chicago just before the 1968 election. Other artists involved include Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Robert Motherwell and Roy Lictenstein.

One caption explained how days before the 1968 election, the artist revolution group exhibited works that criticized Mayor Daley and his term as mayor, which saw riots and pandemonium at the democratic national convention that preceded. Warhol's one contribution was a silkscreen image of a photo taken during the riots, showing police officers and their dogs in a violent response.

Robert Motherwell's piece was a 4"x6" canvas with a splatter of black paint. According to the caption, Motherwell was so well-known for his work and his refusal to participate in any politically-related events that his mere contribution was enough to be highlighted.

On the north side of the hallway of the DePaul Museum, is a second gallery with photos explaining the significance of Chicago in 1968 with regards to the election. The exhibition began Sep. 18 and will run until Nov. 23.

Se ogni secondo della vostra vita si ripete un numero infinito di volte, siamo inchiodati all'eternità come Gesù Cristo sulla croce. E' un'idea terribile. Nel mondo dell'eterno ritorno, su ogni gesto grava il peso di una insostenibile responsabilità. Ecco perchè Nietzsche chiamava l'idea dell'eterno ritorno il fardello più pesante (das schwerste Gewicht). Se l'eterno ritorno è il fardello più pesante, allora le nostre vite su questo sfondo possono apparire in tutta la loro meravigliosa leggerezza. Ma davvero la pesantezza è terribile e la leggerezza meravigliosa? Il fardello più pesante ci opprime, ci piega, ci schiaccia al suolo. Ma nella poesia d'amore di tutti i tempi la donna desidera essere gravata dal fardello del corpo dell'uomo. Il fardello più pesante è quindi allo stesso tempo l'immagine del più intenso compimento vitale. Quanto più il fardello è pesante, tanto più la nostra vita è vicina alla terra, tanto più è reale e autentica.

Al contrario, l'assenza assoluta di un fardello fa sì che l'uomo diventi più leggero dell'aria, prenda il volo verso l'alto, si allontani dalla terra, dall'essere terreno, diventi solo a metà reale e i suoi movimenti siano tanto liberi quanto privi di significato. Che cosa dobbiamo scegliere, allora? La pesantezza o la leggerezza? Questa domanda se l'era posta Parmenide nel sesto secolo avanti cristo. Egli vedeva l'intero universo diviso in coppie di opposizioni: luce-buio, spesso-sottile, caldo-freddo, essere-non-essere. Uno dei poli dell'opposizione era per lui positivo (la luce, il caldo, il sottile, l'essere), l'altro negativo.
Questa suddivisione in un polo positivo e in uno negativo può apparirci di una semplicità puerile. Salvo in un caso: che cos'è positivo, la pesantezza o la leggerezza? Parmenide rispose: il leggero è positivo, il pesante è negativo. Aveva ragione oppure no? Questo è il problema. Una sola cosa è certa: l'opposizione pesante-leggero è la più misteriosa e la più ambigua tra tutte le opposizioni.

Tutte le lingue che derivano dal latino formano la parola compassione col prefisso "com-" e la radice passio che significa originariamente "sofferenza". In altre lingue, ad esempio in ceco, in polacco, in tedesco, in svedese, questa parola viene tradotta con un sostantivo composto da un prefisso con lo stesso significato seguito dalla parola "sentimento" (in ceco: soucit; in polacco: wspol-czucie; in tedesco: Mit-gefuhl; in svedese: med-kansla).
Nelle lingue derivate dal latino, la parola compassione significa: non possiamo guardare con indifferenza le sofferenze altrui; oppure: partecepiamo al dolore di chi soffre. Un'altra parola dal significato quasi identico, pietà (in inglese pity, francese pitiè, ecc) suggerisce persino una sorta di indulgenza verso colui che soffre. Aver pietà di una donna significa che siamo superiori a quella donna, che ci chiniamo, ci abbassiamo al suo livello.
E' per questo che la parola compassione generalmente ispira diffidenza; designa un sentimento ritenuto mediocre, di second'ordine, che che non ha molto a che vedere con l'amore. Amare qualcuno per compassione significa non amarlo veramente.
Nelle lingue che formano la parola compassione non dalla radice "sofferenza" (passio) bensì dal sostantivo "sentimento", la parola viene usata con un significato quasi identico, ma non si può dire che indichi un sentimento cattivo o mediocre. La forza nascosta della sua etimologia bagna la parola di una luce diversa e le dà un senso più ampio: avere compassione (co-sentimento) significa vivere insieme a lui qualsiasi altro sentimento: gioai, angoscia, felicità, dolore. Questa compassione (nel senso di soucit, wspòlczucie, Mit-gefuhl, medkansla) designa quindi la capacità massima di immaginazione affettiva, l'arte della telepatia delle emozioni. Nella gerarchia dei sentimenti è il sentimento supremo.[...]

Piccolo dizionario di parole fraintese.
DONNA. Essere donna è per Sabina un destino che lei non si è scelta. Ciò che non abbiamo scelto non possiamo considerarlo nè un nostro merito nè un nostro fallimento. Sabina pensa che sia necessario tenere un atteggiamento corretto nei confronti del destino che le è stato assegnato. Ribellarsi contro il fatto di essere nata donna le sembra altrettanto sciocco che farsene un vanto.
Una volta, durante uno dei loro primi incontri, Franz le aveva detto, con una sottolineatura curiosa: "Sabina, lei è una donna". Lei non capiva perchè lui le desse questo annuncio con la solennità di un Cristoforo Colombo che ha appena avvistato la costa dell'America. Solo più tardi aveva capito che la parola donna, che lui aveva pronunciato con un'enfasi particolare, non designava per lui uno dei due sessi della specie umana, ma rappresentava un valore. Non tutte le donne erano degne di essere chiamte donne.

Ma se tradiamo B, per il quale abbiamo tradito A, non ne deriva necessariamente che ci riconcilieremo con A. La vita della pittrice divorziata non somigliava alla vita dei genitori traditi. Il primo tradimento è irreparabile. Esso provoca una reazione a catena di nuovi tradimenti, ciascuno dei quali ci allontana sempre più dal punto del tradimento originario.

Robert a văzut faţa nevăzută a lunii în nordul extrem al Franţei, la Sorbon, aproape de graniţa cu actuala Belgie. Extrem de sărac, Robert nu a putut să studieze pe banii părinţilor... Fost cerşetor pe străzile Parisului pentru a-şi plăti studiile, viitorul fondator al... (nu vă zic încă!) a cerut ajutorul Bisericii pentru a ajunge la o finalitate. Însă cine cerea ajutor de aici... trebuia să devină mult mai mult decât un şoarece de bibliotecă. Studiul devenea aproape un scop în sine, rigorile suportate fiind de multe ori extreme.

După terminarea şcolii, rămâne în cadrul Bisericii devenind preot. Fiind un foarte bun orator, ajunge capelanul şi confesorul privat al regelui Ludovic al IX-lea. Nu uită însă de unde a plecat şi, pentru a veni în ajutorul şcolilor sărace şi a studenţilor aflaţi în dificultate, fondează o fraternitate ce avea ca şi scop predarea de lecţii gratuite. Toţi membri erau preoţi, printre aceştia numărându-se personalitaţi ca Guillaume de Bray, Robert de Douai sau Geoffroi de Bar.

În anul 1250, Robert primeşte de la Regina Bianca a Castiliei un document care îi dădea dreptul la a-şi fonda propria instituţie de învăţământ. Astfel i-a naştere Collège de Sorbonne, care va deveni în scurt timp cea mai importantă facultate din cadrul Universităţii din Paris.

Porţile colegiului erau deschise tuturor studenţilor, cu precădere celor săraci - dar capabili, studiile fiind gratuite.

Aşa a început să se scrie istorie.

Până în 1968. Ştim ce s-a întâmplat atunci. Reformele suportate de către sistemul universitar au încercat să dărâme, cu orice preţ (opinie personală), tot ceea ce fusese construit timp de peste şapte secole. Astăzi, aproape că şi-au atins scopul: ca şi în şcoala lui Robert de Sorbon, toţi sunt chemaţi, dar din ce în ce mai puţini sunt aleşi. Procesul de la Bologna va reuşi, probabil, să dea lovitura de graţie. Să sperăm :-)

Mulţi dintre profesorii pe care am avut onoarea să-i am sau să-i cunosc, se situau pe o poziţie foarte critică referitor la noua faţă a sistemului de învăţământ universitar. Dacă în urmă cu 50 de ani, într-una din cele mai renumite şcoli din Franţa, o greşeală de gramatică la limba latină era echivalentă cu o abatere disciplinară (la trei fiind exmatriculat), astăzi, la din ce în ce mai multe facultăţi cu profil umanist, studenţii nici măcar nu au auzit că ar exista o astfel de limbă. Luăm ca exemplu cea mai mare Universitate europeană: La Sapienza - o adevărată fabrică populară de... "studenţi" (FPS), un fel de lounge bar! Dar au diplomă? Au. Şi unii chiar ajung în posturi de răspundere, profesori, scriitori, columnişti etc.

Nu trebuie însă să disperăm. Au mai rămas destule oaze şi şcoli cu renume în Europa şi America. Pentru cât timp încă acestea vor reuşi încă să îşi menţină standardul... nimeni nu ştie. Dar, dacă îmi pun mâna streaşină la ochi şi mă uit la orizont, parcă întrevăd zorile unei noi societăţi: cea a foiletoniştilor... Căci epoca unora ca Jean Mabillon, Bernard de Montfaucon, Leo Allatius sau Michel le Quien (ca să pomenesc doar câţiva din comaţionalii sărbătoritului nostru) a cam apus.

P.S. Bine că astăzi avem CD-urile de la Saint Germain des Prés care să ne mai amintească (?) de câţiva dintre cei menţionaţi mai sus.

Sempre que se deseja inovar ou conservar no espaço social; calar ou ampliar uma  mensagem, implementar ou subverter a ordem, se articula com a potencialidade do jovem – nesse caso, um amplificador de força. O padre jesuíta Hilário Dick afirma que “a juventude é  um período da vida em que alguém está de posse de um excedente temporal e de um crédito, de algo que se tem a mais e do qual se pode dispor. Ser jovem é ter um capital de tempo. A moratória vital pode até ser agredida, pode ser diminuída, pode não ser considerada, mas ela é real.”

O protagonismo da juventude é a intervenção no contexto social para responder a problemas reais em que o jovem é o ator principal. Protagonismo que se manifestou por toda a história, desde a antiguidade até os nossos dias, seja com os personagens que construíram a época do Antigo Testamento, com os jovens heróis gregos, com a adolescência gerada na Revolução Industrial e com a juventude totalitária da Europa.

E em tempos recentes, presenciamos a revolução estudantil de 1968, que acabou de completar 40 anos – um dos momentos mais marcantes da ação da juventude na história. Jovens saíram às ruas protestando contra a ordem social, política e cultural em diversos países do mundo, numa época em que nem sequer existia internet ou celular. O mundo nunca mais foi o mesmo depois de 68.

Cada vez que uma geração rompe com as necessidades anteriores e assume seu papel histórico, a humanidade se reconfigura e reorienta-se a sociedade. Por outro lado, sempre que uma geração está apática, a humanidade permanece estagnada, e todo o potencial jovem fica a mercê de uma geração conservadora que os compra e seduz, levando-os à corrupção moral. Temos, então, uma geração manipulada, que usa seu potencial para conservar e produz, finalmente, uma sociedade confusa e nutrida de valores desajustados.

A juventude é um dos mais importantes recursos espirituais latentes para a revitalização de nossa sociedade. Para Karl Mannheim, “no futuro essa sociedade não poderá ganhar nem a paz nem a guerra a menos que abra campo a todos os recursos vitais e espirituais de que dispõe e, entre eles, sobretudo, as potencialidades latentes na juventude.”

Como João, é preciso escrever aos jovens, e isso significa percebê-los, comunicar com eles, e afirmá-los em seu protagonismo e potencial, afim de que liberem toda a sua força espiritual renovadora sobre a sociedade!

One of the funniest things I ever heard was told to me the other day and since it isn't a joke it is that much more hysterical.  A lady goes into a store that had a sign "We rent chairs and tables."  She tells the owner what she needs.  He says "We don't rent chairs and tables."  She asked why the sign was on the door.  He replied "I haven't had time to remove it."  She said "When did you stop renting tables and chairs?"  The owner tells her "Two years ago."

I turned 13 that summer, and it was one of the most painful summers of my life. I had lost a 19-year-old brother in January of that year during the infamous Tet Offensive, just one of the thousands of casualties of the Vietnam War. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in April of that year, spawning riots in major U.S. cities. Senator Robert F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States in March and began his 87-day campaign. It ended on the kitchen floor of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on the night he won the California primary, and he died 25 hours later from the gunshot wound to his head inflicted by Sirhan B. Sirhan.

I loved Bobby Kennedy. I wanted him to stop the Vietnam War and bring our troops home. I wanted the death and destruction to stop. I was only in 7th grade, but I was fervently behind his run for the Presidency. My heart swelled when I saw newsclips of him on the campaign trail, reaching out to the crowds, the crowds grasping his hands, touching his back, his arms, whatever they could reach. He was going to be our next President, a man who cared about the most needy members of our country, a man who could help to heal the vicious wounds of an undeclared and savage war.

And then it was over. Just. Over. He was dead. At 42-years-old, he left behind a pregnant wife, ten kids, and stunned, grieving supporters.

And I remember this song in the background of that summer.

Everything is more vivid, more poignant when you're an adolescent. Everything is happening for the first time, and it will never be that way again. The joy is brighter, the love is richer, the sorrows more profound. Every emotion is sharper and more exquisitely experienced.

I turned the radio on in my car this morning, set to my new favorite station LOVE 105 FM. This was the first song I heard this morning as I backed out of the driveway, followed by On Top of the World, a perky song by Karen Carpenter. I felt the tug of those emotions again. It was a faint pull, the intensity dampened by the years, by cynicism, fatigue and too much experience. But I allowed myself to close my eyes and swoon for a few seconds to some long-buried memories and hopes and dreams. Then I opened my eyes and joined the flow of traffic into the city, leaving that poignant summer of 1968 and its shattered illusions behind.

Semana passada fez quarenta anos de uma das vaias mais produtivas da história desse país: a  que o Caetano levou no Festival Internacional da Canção (FIC), no auditório da PUC-RJ, em 1968, quando cantou "É proibido proibir". A história da música é linda. O Caetano viu uma fotografia de uma parede pinchada nos protestos do maio parisiense, com o paradoxo: “Il est interdit d'interdire”. Ficou com a frase na cabeça e quando o Guilherme Araújo ficou sabendo disso, obrigou-o a fazer uma canção com a frase. Foi o Guilherme também que insistiu com o Caetano para ele entrar no FIC daquele ano e inscrever a música. “É proibido proibir” chegou às semi-finais. O Caê resolveu, então, tocar a música com os Mutantes: o Rogério Drupat fez arranjos eletrônicos e esquisitíssimos, que mais pareciam gritos desesperados – nada mais apropriado à idéia da música. Assim que entrou no palco, o Caetano já começou a ser vaiado de costas; o pessoal dos Mutantes não deixou por menos: viraram e começaram a tocar também de costas pra platéia. O Caetano ignorou e começou a cantar sua melodia ternária:

A mãe da virgem diz que não

E o anúncio da televisão

E estava escrito no portão

E o maestro ergueu o dedo

E além da porta,

há o porteiro, sim...

E eu digo não,

Eu digo não ao não...

A platéia virou pro palco e começou a tacar papel, papelão, pedaços de madeira no Caetano, que exaltado produziu um dos sermões mais perfeitos que eu já vi e que é um resumo de toda a patética juventude daquele tempo – época, aliás, que muitos idiotinhas de plantão gostam de proclamar como o tempo da juventude-inteligente-engajada; que nada... eram uns grandíssimos imbecis, que pregavam liberdade, mas eram censores artisticamente analfabetos- divago: volto à reação do Caetano, que basta:

Mas é isso que é a juventude que diz que quer tomar o poder? Vocês têm coragem de aplaudir esse ano uma música, um tipo de música que vocês não teriam coragem de aplaudir no ano passado... São a mesma juventude e vão sempre, sempre matar amanhã o velhote inimigo que morreu ontem. Vocês não estão entendendo nada, nada, nada, absolutamente nada. Vocês estão por fora. Vocês não vão vencer. Mas que juventude é essa? Vocês são iguais sabem a quem? Àqueles que foram no Roda Viva e espancaram os atores... Vocês não diferem em nada deles. Estão querendo policiar a música brasileira. Gilberto Gil está aqui comigo pra gente acabar com toda a imbecilidade que reina no Brasil.
